You are saying it’s not gonna scratch at a level 6?

Corning: “We made gorilla glass bulletproof”
Me buying a new phone: “Don’t you worry phone, I’ll dress you up in bumper case and screen protector”

    Scratch at level 6?

You should not use glass on the phone beyond the display and cameras. Too fragile. Even a good plastic back is lighter and more durable.

It still probably scratches at a level 6, with deeper grooves at a level 7.

Considering the current phone still crack when they are in cases, I think it is safe to say that we are far from a time where you can go without a case and not have anything to worry about

Never had a crack in my 2nd gen iPod touch or my iPhone 6s. But I’ve always handled them with care, and used a case that protects the screen from drops.

0_o/* I call BS! There’s currently less than ‘zero’ incentive for the manufacture to make tougher glass! Junk, just stop buying their Chinese Spy Tool GARBAGE!

CORRECTION 1:44 – Apple uses its own blend of Corning’s glass for its iPhones.
** Also, according to Corning, they use sandpaper instead of asphalt to test phones because its easy to replace after each drop. A surface like asphalt or sandpaper will become duller after repeated drops. I personally, still prefer drop testing phones on the sidewalk.
Tell me what you think, and thanks so much for watching!

      July 23, 2020 at 7:57 pm

Why don’t they just put adhesive on the back of sandpaper and adhere it to asphalt so that it’s the same roughness each time (I feel like that still isn’t accurate though) while being the same density as asphalt? Love YOU by the way. My opinion on the company does not reflect your personal reviews. You’re a great asset to CNET.

      July 23, 2020 at 8:15 pm

Aww thank you ☺️ And that’s a good question btw, they could feasibly bring in a block of asphalt into the lab and attach sandpaper. I’ll ask!

The 2 and much more : think about your holidays on the beach or in mountain : rain, humidity, UV , sand , wather, salt, ashes when you’re stupid smoker ! ????????????

@Vanessa Hand Orellana Testing is hard. But also , standards need to apply. If they change the parameters, they may need a new standard for certification. Is there one for screen durability?

Another correction. 1:44 Apple has been using Gorilla Glass since iPhone 4 not the original iPhone.

Question will it survive less then knee height where your phone slips out of your hand to plug in your phone in bed in a case?

  21. William Patterson

    July 23, 2020 at 8:31 pm

Glass is glass. Tell me what the increase in hardness, ultimate strength, etc. is and I’ll start listening. Marketing terms like twice the scratch resistant are worthless without context.

Not like the mid range phones will be getting it for another 5 years. I’m not sure if my brand new Moto G Power has Gorilla Glass 3 or 5, but it’s nowhere close to 7

I had a shatter proof phone and though my screen didn’t break the insides sure didn’t survive the fall.

  46. solidussnake0079

    July 26, 2020 at 5:15 pm

Nonsense….drop your phone and the screen cracks regardless

  47. iwill 859

    July 26, 2020 at 8:59 pm

I won’t trust it till the glass scratches at a level 7 with deepers grooves at a level 8
