I never trust someone who says their job is harder. I’ll trust the rocket scientist that tells me brain surgery is harder not the one who insists his job is harder because of the number of neurons in a brain.

Brain is very small compared to the size of rocket engine so rocket science is at least 69.7 times harder that being a neurosurgeon.

Maybe someone has already said this, but there are far, far, far more stars in the universe than 100 billion. There are 100 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

As an advocate for reducing stigma around mental illness I agree with his comments about the Lobotomy and Thorazine being an important pathway into the understanding that mental illness was in fact an illness and not “weakness” or a character fault. It should be noted that while the Nobel Prize was won for this procedure, it was a complete failure in achieving the predicted results and even today people still live with the very real disability of having had a Lobotomy or extended Thorazine treatment and they are unable to process very simple information and problem solving.

1:22 this response is called the Dunning-Kruger effect, when a person over estimates their own competence in a field of study that they know very little about.

Boy, he’s an arrogant one. The smarter man would have said that he didn’t know whether brain surgery was harder than rocket science because he wasn’t a rocket scientist. Also, I’ve talked to a few brain surgeons and they do practice on cadavers.

12 years of war, hundreds of thousands of dead an millions of refugees, 4 years of sanctions on a dying country, an economic crisis, starvations, lack of medicine and medical equipment and now an EARTHQUAKE with 7.8 magnitude hits Syria leading to thousands of dead and tens of thousands of homeless!

well technically the universe is infinite so theres an infinite amount of stars. even if he is talking about the observable universe, there are still more stars then the neurons and the connections in your brain. and i dont understand why would someone with a doctorate give such a stupid and illogical answer.

How the brain feels: When I was on a field trip to a Cadaver lab for an Anatomy class, I remember referring to it as “A ball of chicken noodle” – It made the others feel sick bc of the smell in the room, but I swear it actually does feel like that xD

Some questions answer themselves if you think about them. For example, the difference between neurosurgery and brain surgery, is pretty obvious when you consider that there are not neurons only in the brain, our whole motor, cognitive and digestive systems depend on neurons.

the number connection between neurons, not just greater than the number of stars in the universe, but even than the number of particles. but this is not the reason why its harder.

  52. no body

    February 9, 2023 at 7:03 am

It’s a little weird to sing the praises of lobotomy without also acknowledging how terrible it was for the people forced to have them, and how very inaccurate the physical technique was. Maybe that’s what he meant? We learned how to extremely harm people and their physiology.

  53. Brent Lewis

    February 9, 2023 at 7:09 am

Rocket Engineer here. Of course the brain surgeon is going to say brain surgery is harder. 😛 The number of connections in the brain is estimated to be 100 trillion. The current estimate of stars in just the *observable* universe is 1 septillion. That’s 10 billion times more. But I guess brain surgeons aren’t know for math.

That said, it’s probably hard to say which is more difficult. How would you even measure that? Hey, Wired. You want to interview a rocket engineer? Edit: Nevermind I see you already did.

  57. Nevò Mirzai Hamadani

    February 9, 2023 at 2:25 pm

The amount of connections between neurons is estimated to be around 10^15, the number of stars is around 10^24, so no, the number of connections between neurons is not greater than the number of stars, and that is a stupid explanation to say that brain surgery is harder than rocket science, you just cannot compare them if you haven’t done both

  63. Omar Guardado

i think they’re very hard to compare. Neuroscience is memorization and experience. Rocket science is veryyyyy complex math normally without a time restraint

  66. Guy Elisha

    February 9, 2023 at 11:27 pm

Rocket science is by far harder. The hardest things are the unsolved, the open questions. When you do a brain surgery, someone has done the research, has taught you, and all you need, as demanding as it is, is to execute. A rocket scientist, like a neuroscientist, do research, and thus it is way harder as no answers are available. You yourself called it a skill

Is DBS more invasive than reinnervation surgery? Brain surgery seems to me like the MOST invasive, and if there wasnt a battery pack under the chest skin Id consider, but the idea of that grosses me out. My hair is very long too and dont want it shaved😢

  75. Kellen

    February 10, 2023 at 4:34 am

Btw his comment about neurons and stars is completely wrong. An estimated 200 sextillion stars exist. There are a hundred billion just to each galaxy

  76. Randy Kintzley

Can’t believe that he basically gave lobotomy a pass. The practice was barbaric, and probably delayed better techniques rather than advanced them.

I had to have a brain surgery for something and when I woke up I had a drain in because of pressure. The stuff in it looked mostly clear but there were a lot of little tiny specks. When I asked what the specks are, I was told they were “unimportant grey matter”. When is grey matter considered “important” or not?

Dr. Brian, two errors of fact. 86 billion neurons now accepted as number (not 100 billion) and the 100 trillion connections in the brain, while an extraordinarily large number, is minute compared to all the stars in the universe…there are individual galaxies with as many stars as brain synapses. Otherwise, great responses.

Actually, if you compare the number of combinations the 86 billion neurons can make with each other. A fair comparison would be the number of gravitational interaction that each of the 200 sextillion stars can make with each other. And I think that neurons can only make synapses with neurons that share the same network (thus the importance of contextualization when teaching). But each stars makes an attractive force (gravitational) in every other star in the universe (they may decrease with the distance, but never disappears completely). While a neuron can only communicate (by sinapses) with other neuron that share a synaptic cleft. I do not think it would be wise to affirm brain surgery is harder than rocket science (or vice versa). As this would look as an attitude of exaggerated self importance or superiotiy over others. “The greatest blunders have often been caused by the arrogance of power, and the best successes by the humility of those who wielded it.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Although, parts of the “being awake while undergoing brain surgery” is fairly outdated at most high-standard institutions. The instruments avaiable today simply eliminate the need to keep the patient awake. I’m one of those patients. Before, all DBS patients had to be awake for the procedure, now you usually don’t (some instutions and countries excluded).

As a med student who’s involved with a decent amount of NSGY research currently, I feel like it’s an impossible comparison. While I can imagine myself doing NSGY if I mustered up the courage to stick with the merciless grind that it is, I don’t believe I’m intellectually capable of doing rocket science. Maybe my experience biases me to say this, but when I think of rocket science, I think of logical geniuses and mathematical freaks. My understanding was that only people near the top of the IQ spectrum can even consider doing something that requires as much abstract calculation/reasoning as rocket science. Maybe I’m wrong though?

Of course, a great degree of intelligence is required to be a neurosurgeon, but there is variability in terms of what *type* of NSGY. The super next level stuff (e.g. functional NSGY, brain-computer interfaces, etc.) probably matches rocket science in terms of intellectual capability but a baseline NSGY job, though insanely competitive to reach, eventually has a cap on the pure abstract thinking involved. The emotional intelligence, higher stakes (in most cases), and unpredictability in some cases does count for something though, but ultimately, I guess neither one can imagine doing the other’s job.

Brain surgery is orders of magnitude more difficult than rocket science or rocket engineering. We’ve had brains for our whole existence and barely understand them, but a thousand years playing with gunpowder: got us to the moon, put thousands of useful devices in orbit, lets us keep a semi-permanent human presence in orbit, and expanded our knowledge of “rocket science” to be nearly complete.
If neuroscience is so easy, why does the patient need to be awake and performing tasks to ensure that they’re not losing function?
The human brain is the single most complex thing in the known universe.
Rockets are incredibly simple physics, the product of a few hundred years of tinkering with chemistry and ballistics.
The human brain, and the mind it contains, is the product of billions of years of biological evolution.
It’s really no surprise that it has been difficult to master.

    • Zord90X

      April 27, 2023 at 11:55 am

It is true that we do not know the foundations of conscience, but to say it is orders of magnitude, let alone more difficulty than rocket science, is pretty stupid. There are several reasons as to why there has only ever been 1 rocket that went to the moon in half a century. Try making a rocket that will bring you to Mars yourself without the use of any high level super computer that only NASA has.

The comparison between the number of connections in the human brain and the number of stars in the universe is a popular way to convey the complexity of the neural network in our brains, but it lacks a precise scale for comparison.

The human brain contains approximately 86 billion neurons. Each neuron can form thousands of synaptic connections with other neurons, leading to an estimated 100 trillion synapses or neural connections. This number, while immensely large, is not quite comparable to current estimates of the number of stars in the observable universe.

The observable universe, according to astronomers, may contain around 100 billion galaxies, each with potentially hundreds of billions of stars. Estimates suggest there could be around 10^22 to 10^24 stars, which is orders of magnitude greater than the number of synapses in the human brain.

So, while the number of synapses in the human brain is astronomical and reflects a vast network of connections, the number of stars in the observable universe is still substantially larger based on current astronomical observations and estimates.

  210. @profjoshtan

    April 15, 2024 at 10:40 pm

There are more neural connections (10^14) in the brain than stars in the GALAXY (10^11). There are more stars in the universe than neural connections since there are as many galaxies in the universe as there are stars in our own galaxy (10^11*10^11 = 10^22).

I have a question: Is grey matter just a saying or is the brain really grey or is it pink like in movies?

    • @gaiusfulmen

      April 17, 2024 at 9:52 pm

A living brain is mostly pink. The term “grey matter” refers to those tissues which are composed mostly of neurons, while “‘white matter” is composed mostly of their fibers. You could imagine a server room filled with a lot of computers (neuronal bodies) and all the cables (nerve fibers) connecting those servers to the rest of the building. The reason it’s called white matter is because the fibers filling such tissue are insulated with something called myelin (again, imagine a cable insulated with rubber). Myelin has a pale appearance, hence the term white matter.

Regardless the answer to which is harder, I think his answer was ridiculous. Are you manipulating neurons big guy? Why does neuron count matter? An appropriate response would relate to the value of human life, the limited time available in surgery vs the artificially imposed deadlines in rocket science or even the fact that we know much more about rockets and physics than we do about our own brain making the practice of medicine a “practice” compared to being an expert in torque coefficients and velocity etc.

I’m sorry, but you messed up on the whole thing of rocket science versus brain surgery. You talked about the number of neurons, which are nodes. Then you talked about the number of connections among these nodes. But did you compare that to connections among stars in the universe? No. You compared it to the number of stars which are nodes, but simply accepting your comparison. We should look at the number of potential connections among all the stars of the universe, which will be even greater than the number of connections among the neurons.

Yes, it’s true that connections among neurons are not the same thing as gravitational connections among Stars, but that would have been the consistent comparison. So yes, you’re a big old smarty pants, but you completely missed this really basic point.

In other respects, the video is good.

    April 18, 2024 at 4:43 pm

Cuz its not actually ur brain that hurts during a migraine or headache. Its the skull, and outter tissues and vessels that hurt. If i had to take a stab at why the brain feels no pain, i would guess it has something to do with self preservation. Think of how shock works. Experience a bad enough injury and adrenaline takes over, some people feel mild pain instead of intense pain, and others will feel literally no pain at all, because thats the point. U need to get help for yourself or u could die. Shut off the pain and u can do that. I feel like the brain would be something that would be extremely painful to even SLIGHTLY injure (if the brain felt pain) so, it purposely has no pain receptors. Just a theory though!

    April 20, 2024 at 3:01 am

1:20 of course brain surgery is harder, you’ve got someone’s life on the line IN the moment. With rocket science you do have lives on the line, but you have like weeks and months to make sure they’re going to be safe lol.

    April 20, 2024 at 4:58 am

So I watched this whole video to have the thumbnail question answered… and it wasn’t. Migraines occur even though the brain has no pain receptors by… stimulating ‘the pain receptors’. Clearly there’s two options here: the doctor is completely contradicting himself, or simply not mentioning where those pain receptors are and how they cause migraines to feel like they’re in your brain. And if the answer is going to be that devoid of useful information, I don’t see why it was featured in the video in the first place.

    • @TjallieBrrr

      April 20, 2024 at 6:41 am

As far as i know most headaches are caused by the muscles around the skull and the face or around/behind the eyes, where there are also lots of nerve ends/pain receptors.

Massaging your jaw, face and skull and gently around the eyeballls + getting rid of all light sources are a great way to reduce migraines.
I cant really name the exact spots cause it depends on the area that hurts but by doing this you’ll learn what works best for you.

Love his answer for the labatomy question. Most of the education we have about the brain was done in the earlier part of the 20 century. They were highly unethical but without knowing what we know now, they couldn’t have known the extent to how unethical they were. Now it is very hard to study regions of the brain, we have to rely on volunteer patients who have unusual developments or freak accidents basically.

The question about what’s more complicated, brain surgery or rocket science, he gave the wrong answer.
He answered as if the question was “what is more complicated, a brain or rocket science?”.
A brain surgeon does not know everything about the brain, he knows everything we know about the brain.
So, what is more complicated, learning everything we know about the brain or everything about rocket science?

I have Hydrocephalus. Born with it, had 3 brain surgeries by the time I was 2 years old. My Neurosurgeon was (and still is, to the best of my knowledge) toted as one of the best pediatric neurosurgeons in Canada. He put my shunt in (1993 or ’94, somewhere in there) and it kept going strong until December 2018, when it finally just stopped. Dr. Hollenberg has long since retired (he was ancient even when I was a kid lol) but my new neurosurgeon saved my life that day. Apparently my shunt has been in place for so long that it really can’t be removed very easily, so instead of replacing it, my new doctor used a newer technique where he bypassed the need for a shunt by opening up one of the ventricles in my brain, so I guess my hydrocephalus is technically cured?

Nope, the lobotomy was horrific and based on the results of one chimpanzee and doctors claiming it worked wonders just because they didn’t want any of their decisions to be wrong. Just because it got a Nobel prize doesn’t mean it was good, and there are plenty of other ways we know about a biological basis of psychiatric illness. At least in my education, we use the lobotomy as a warning, and I don’t trust the education of anyone who thinks it was a good thing

    May 3, 2024 at 2:22 pm

The answer to the thumbnail question is “the blood vessels relax and that stimulates the pain receptors”

…what pain receptors? Did you even read the question?

  447. @Giraffinator

I wonder if he lucky brain surgery underwear

    Stimulates the pain receptors
You just said there weren’t any.
It’s not just you – I have also heard in many places that there are not any
Did you leave out an adjective somewhere? Because I don’t feel the question was completely answered and I’m still confused. And my sinus headaches they hurt a lot

    May 3, 2024 at 6:59 pm

1:40 Yeah brain surgery is harder. But he is an idiot for saying that. There are 60 trillion connections in the brain. There are 2 hexillion stars estimated.
    60 000 000 000 000 vs
    2 000 000 000 000 000 000 000
And the connections between neurons have nothing to do with brain surgery, nor the amount of stars with rocket science.

As a person who gets migraines, I didn’t understand the answer. In the beginning of the video he says the brain has no pain receptors. In the migraine question he says the relaxation of the blood cells cause the pain receptors to transmit pain…not following it! As the person asking the question says, it feels like an axe in the middle of the brain.

I find this video and the information in it SO fascinating, but I have to stop middway because it is making me feel queasy and making my breath get weird 😅 I am a bit impressionable

Sometimes the surgical procedure he describes is so fascinating and unthinkable to a person not in the field that I end up suddenly laughing

  453. @kittyjuneo2218

    May 4, 2024 at 1:06 am

10:20 If this was an average person and not a neurosurgeon saying this procedure is truly done, I wouldn’t believe it.

  454. @FoodNerds

My guy used to be an aerospace engineer aka rocket scientist and he says that all that math is a waste because they only use 3 equations and they are all algebraic. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  455. @TimM-kz1vl

Engineers get another chance, brain surgeons don’t.

  456. @clperez3

WOW, this guy is sharp! Well spoken, bravo!

  457. @Craigeek

I want a brain implant that artificially inserts augmented reality into my perceived vision. No glasses or contacts required. It happens all in the brain.

(patient plays guitar during brain surgery)
“wow… that was an overwhelming piece of flamenco”
“thanks. It was the first time I played guitar”

  459. @angelalicea7871

    May 4, 2024 at 6:19 am

I hate doctors like him. The answer is no. The brain has no pain receptors. Explain why!!!!!!!! You went to all that school to not tell us. He was also asked about Surgeons sneezing in the OR, and he replied with if the patient was going to sneeze …..

  460. @31redorange08

    May 4, 2024 at 9:40 am

He didn’t answer the migraine question properly.

TL;DR – “I highly recommend keeping your thalamus.”
Heh! Oh, internet… Noted. Will try not to lose it.

“Even the best simulation technology isn’t the same as the operating room itself.”

Clearly this guy has never played Surgeon Simulator.

    May 4, 2024 at 4:37 pm

Well, I guess mathematics is the most difficult subject in the universe then, because there’re more numbers than all of our braincells combined

  464. @Feimicha

    May 4, 2024 at 5:23 pm

Probably a question for a psychologist (I’m not asking my therapist), but would deep brain stimulation have the same effects on someone with PTSD? As far as I know, the immediate recall isn’t something I’d imagine happening if the brain sort of “blocks out” traumatic memories as a defense response. (For context, I am someone who is eligible for a PTSD diagnosis, but my therapist insists that I have to be an adult to be officially diagnosed)
Edit: The ADHD questioner is me

This guy is seriously… defending lobotomy. Wtf

  466. @benjaminmcelwain162

    Is this Andy Sambergs cousin?

  467. @samedipek3696

    May 4, 2024 at 9:09 pm

I did not think i would see such a interesting question in a video.

  468. @bicivelo

    May 4, 2024 at 9:16 pm

He made it sound like lobotomy were a good thing. He even said a Nobel prize was awarded to that. And truth, it was a medieval method of pacifying people.
