Sophie Howe is the world’s only future generations commissioner, a new kind of government official tasked with advocating for the interests of generations to come and holding public institutions accountable for delivering long-term change. She describes some of the people-focused policies she’s helped implement in Wales, aimed at cutting carbon emissions, increasing sustainability and promoting well-being as a national goal.

This talk was part of the Countdown Global Launch on 10.10.2020. (Watch the full event here: .) Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

If you think leaving things better than you found them is just having kids and providing for them, you’ve got a long way ahead.
Providing for your kids is the minimum. Leaving things better affect every part of your life and every interaction you have.
I know for a fact I personally could be doing a whole lot more and so could you guys.
Let’s just all try a little harder and see how it goes.

The colonial United States is actually very big on socialism. It’s just that the colonial government doesn’t want their citizens to think about it. We all have to pay to send children to school even if we don’t have kids. We all pay for those schools, the buses, the fuel used to pick up the children and everything else required so the children can go to public school. Don’t want to pay to send other peoples children to school? Too bad. You CAN’T opt out. That means socialism. The post office. Don’t want to support the USPS? Too bad. You have to support it and you CAN”T opt out.
If someone gets injured on the job and it’s caused them to no longer be able to work, YOU must chip in to support that disabled person and you CAN”T opt out. Don’t have a loved buried in a cemetery or don’t visit the park? Too bad. You must chip in to support and upkeep their maintenance and you CAN’T opt out. These are all forms of socialism. They are forced upon you and taken out of your pay while you work and while you pay your property taxes and or included in rent from your landlord. The colonial United States of America IS socialism. The only way for you to opt out is to relinquish US citizenship, and move away.
Forcing you to buy heath insurance is another act of socialism.

      November 5, 2020 at 11:14 pm

@Wabanaki [A Travelin’ Indian] socialism is when the government does stuff, and the more stuff the government does, the more socialister it is.

If you cannot keep doing something forever, this is the very definition of unsustainable. Focusing on human wellbeing instead of economic growth is the kind of thinking that will bring society out of the confines of ancient economic systems and will propel us into a future of sustainable growth. It is not socialism. It is futurism. One of the defining features of our species is our aspiration to be more than what we are. Until now, that aspiration has been individualistic. Imagine what we can achieve if we apply that attitude to our entire society. That’s the kind of future I want for my descendants.

*What you don’t know about climate and energy will kill you*
50% of humaity will be water stressed by 2025
50% of thermal & hydro electric power will soon be water stressed
40% of coal power is now water stressed, and so will 30% of planned hyrdo power
North Euro offshore wind works 30% of the time, onshore works 22%, and solar 11%
80% of energy is fossil and 20% is electric of which 4% is renewable 2% solar & wind

Europe burns 80% of wood pellets, and 80% of its recycled plastic/paper for electricity
Trees grow faster and die younger with increasing temps droughts & fire
Amazon tree farms take 30 yrs to recoup 10% of Amazon’ tree loss
Overseas forests are clear-cut & burned for 50% of Europe’s renewable electricity

There have been 25 UN Climate COPS and 15 Bio-diversity COPS
There were 1.5 billion flights in 2019

Earth is heating 46% faster than 50 years ago

350 ppm CO2 will not cool eath, 300 maybe will do it
We must cut energy use 50% in 10 yrs to stay under 1.5 C
This never happened in history, and will never happen in the future
People who are richer smarter and older than you don’t want you to know this

Batteries and bio-energy will not reduce earth’s heat imbalance in time, and will wipe out tribes and wildlife
Jets are 68% more efficient, but fly 60X more people over 60 years
There were 1.5 billion flights in 2019, and only 6 million out of 1.2 billion vehicles are electric
Petrochemical demand grew 7X human population for 20 years
EVs, batteries, bio-energy and solar/wind will not stop runaway hothouse mass extinction
If you want credible sources go to Loki’s Revenge blog because I don’t want your love or money

The first rule of Loki’s Revenge is that nobody talk about Loki’s Revenge
Since nobody will like you for it, this is an easy rule to keep
Same goes for Hansen’s monthly private carbon dividends being real climate justice

or go to Reddit’s DarkFuturology for links and sources

Nothing To See Here = Runaway Hothouse Mass Extinction
There are 23 billion chickens on earth, if one sneezes we all get the flu 😉

“A world better than we found it…”
    “Long term goals…”
But, she is “a mother of five” – human stupidity…!
Is no problem – nature will educate human species in ways not seen even in postapocaliptic movies.

    • Florin Apostoiu

      November 8, 2020 at 12:53 am

@ScrubberDawg No, she is out there thinking she is “trying to help our species become sustainable”!
There will be no change AT ALL, at any level, if there will be no fundamental change in every human individual, and that means a totally different kind of education in society, which i do not see happening.

    • ScrubberDawg

      November 8, 2020 at 1:15 am

@Florin Apostoiu Dude you dont need to be reborn and raised as a genetically different human being to understand simple concepts like sustainability. Were not old dogs being taught new tricks. People just dont care or bother, but education and awarness can change that.

    • ScrubberDawg

      November 8, 2020 at 1:16 am

@ScrubberDawg For 2 decades i’ve dug up too much in the human brain, and finally, in the past 2 years, i’ve discovered things that sometimes i wish i didn’t knew.
After 20 years it’s been a true relief, but it also brought sadness – i feel sorry for the human species, all my hopes that i’ve built in 20 years have been completely shattered in just 2 years – there is simply no hope, human species is tens of thousands of years behind technological progress, and this (technological progress) is the only thing that give us the illusion of evolution, but is just that, an illusion.
And you want to tell me that we can advance tens of thousand of years in just a few years…!?
Well, good luck with that – i just hope i am wrong!

  36. Marquis de Hoto

    November 6, 2020 at 2:04 pm

We need more people in power to think like her.

The right of every person to pursue their dreams and wishes is important… but people all to often forget that society is also very important.
Alone we are nothing. We rely on other people for supplying us with food for example…. otherwise we’d need to grow/hunt our own food and couldn’t pursue our hobbies and so on.
This kind of freedom requires a lot of responsibilities…. not just taking… people also need to give back. Even if they don’t see the results.

In a part of the United States with more than 17,000 years of human history, cultural preservation advocate Tracie Revis is working to turn the Ocmulgee Mounds into Georgia’s first national park and preserve. This park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, bringing the tribal voice back to an area they were forcibly removed from 200 years ago. Revis explores the complex feelings of caring for this land and shows how it’s fostering healing in return.
