The pandemic spurred an unprecedented reclamation of urban space, ushering in a seemingly bygone era of pedestrian pastimes, as cars were sidelined in favor of citizens. Highlighting examples from across the United States, environmental designer Kevin J. Krizek reflects on how temporary shifts — like transforming streets into places for dining, recreation and community — can become permanent fixtures that make for more livable and sustainable cities.

“climate change, equity, and safety” are the most pressing issues of our time? How about education, equality, and choice? All of these seem to be forgotten.

    • Aastha Singh

      September 17, 2021 at 7:37 pm

Equity is the next step of equality and covers everything from employment to education to healthcare and more. Safety and Equity together cover choice.

    • Larry Holthouser

      September 17, 2021 at 8:14 pm

@Aastha Singh Equity is equal outcomes regardless of effort. I don’t want employees who are equitable. And choice is a personal acceptance of risk which has nothing to do with safety.

    • Aastha Singh

      September 17, 2021 at 8:35 pm

@Larry Holthouser No, equity is fairness. Example- a person from a financially weaker background should receive more help with resources, as compared to a person from a rich background. Equity, Equality and safety ensure a person’s right to freedom of choice.

    • Larry Holthouser

      September 17, 2021 at 9:16 pm

@Aastha Singh I am from a poor family. But, it was hard work, not equity that has changed my class in society. You keep your safety and I’ll keep my choice.

    • Sentay0

      September 18, 2021 at 12:01 pm

@Larry Holthouser good that that worked for you but everyone is different and everyone’s environment is different, don’t apply stuff that worked for you without considering these different factors. For example if you were in a tech or advertising hub, hard work could keep you alive but not raise your caste, you would need networking skills instead. Does that track?

    • Aastha Singh

      September 18, 2021 at 6:00 pm

@Larry Holthouser Equity does not mean that people shouldn’t work hard anymore. It gives a better platform and resources to those who need it according to what they need and evens out the playing field, instead of giving the same to everyone and keeping everyone at the same relative position as they were before. Just because one thing works for you doesn’t mean it will for everyone. The point of progress is to make things easier, not keep them difficult.

The ideas presented here are thrilling but they present a utopian view of community responses. For example: Comfort. Pittsburgh, midwinter, will not use street space in the same way as in mid summer. Who’s biking to the mall when it’s -15°C?

    • Remco D

      September 18, 2021 at 11:51 am

It doesnt go -15 C in the netherlands that often, but we still use a bike when its freezing

    • Andy Cordy

      September 18, 2021 at 12:36 pm

@Remco D No doubt but the subject here is American cities.

Forced lockdowns and restrictions “reshaped” cities…

  25. Drew

    September 18, 2021 at 8:17 am

They tried this in the uk already too. Much to the annoyance of all the residents in the streets they closed off without even asking anyone. Our councils took it upon themselves to deem who wasn’t important enough to be able to get around easily in their own neighbourhood, even emergency vehicles couldn’t access streets quickly they needed. It was a big bust and they had to retract this airy fairy impractical b.s.
    Plus
As soon as he said climate change i couldnt take this guy seriously. Also
Doesn’t he know c19 is a manmade casedemic! The governement needs to get over itself. And listen to what the ppl really want. Not take liberties when no ones looking. Im sure it sounded good in their heads.

  28. Sentay0

    September 18, 2021 at 12:04 pm

Crazy thought: maybe we should work on effective public transit and online infrastructure. If no one needs to go anywhere then the amount of people transiting should decrease thus you can offer better more succinct transit options (because you’re no longer trying to maneuver the entire cities populace).

@Jacob Ross it should be easy to justify any numbers supporting a 5% death rate using data directly from medical journals or scientific evaluations (Impossible task with such a limited pool to choose from right)
