Creative, sustainable solutions find their home in the thousands of informal neighborhoods across the world. Urban planner Jota Samper believes these often overlooked settlements (also known as slums) should be regarded as hubs of innovation and shares three reasons why giving them the attention they deserve could help change the way humanity coexists — and cities evolve — on a global scale.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Spare us with the compassionate speech when the corporations want this to happen … By 2050 1 in 3 people will live in poverty … But of course … Everything is going according to the master plan … ” Nobody knows , nobody wants , everyone complains , It’s not our fault , it is our fault etc. ” We kill ourselves and we see it each day … Humanity’s ideals and aspirations are dying little by little under our very own eyes and our spirits yell harder than ever : Where is our belief ? Where is God ? Where are our old ways when life had meaning …

there are informal settlements in the midwest. I tried to go camping in Fort Wayne but kept running into to squaters. I imagine its because its so close to the town and IU the school that so many people end up homeless out in brown county.

*_1_* Of the 7.9 billion people worldwide in 2021, three billion (38%) have no access to working toilets, 1.1 billion (14%) defecate in the open, 844 million (11%) have no safe water, and 811 million (10%) go to bed hungry daily.
*_2_* There are now about 2043 billionaires and 14.6 million millionaires worldwide. What are they doing to stop those problems above?

at the scale of 7.9 Bn humans; there is no fix ( i believe ). When the human condition is multiplied and amplified by sheer weight of numbers, everything crashes as nature does not easily accommodate this scale. Suppose we spread the wealth evenly amongst humanity…..would that not be like giving every country a nuke? The humans there are too many of are poor peasants,,,the rich will fix this sooner or later. And nature will fix the rich, with a micro nova or other natural, cyclical cataclysmic event. there is no fixing the human condition but mitigation might be available through AI.

The horror of this situation is most grave and no form of city planning, however innovative can hope to alleviate a situation where so many new human beings need housing. We learned decades ago that social housing imposed on low income communities causes more problems than it solves, creating warring communities and lawless no go areas. Perhaps the organic growth of informal settlements will help stop some of these situations occurring but ahead of climate change the biggest problem facing humanity is population. Without de-population we are inviting extinction.
