You sometimes forget how liberal TedTalk is but here’s a nice reminder. Caucasian dominant countries can and some will close their borders and implement policies to grow their demographic. The United States will undoubtedly have a civil war as all fallen empires do. It’s simply a question of scope.

Violence is the pillar on which all societies are built and its repression is tantamount to societal collapse.
For societies to function, there must be a set of agreed upon rules, which we call laws, to govern all individuals which comprise them. Without those rules to abide by, individuals would likely work against each other and societies would collapse. Even assuming the good will of the individuals comprising a society, having laws allows us to determine the point at which a dysfunctional individual must be stopped by force.
Of course, laws are simply words. Spoken words or words on paper, but only words. Laws gain power through their enforcement, and enforcement is only possible through violence or the implied threat of violence. As an example, a man may pay off a speeding ticket because he thinks it’s the right thing to do, but what stops him from deciding he doesn’t feel like paying it is the threat of being forcefully taken to jail. And once in jail, what keeps him behaved is the threat of further confinement, which is achieved through violence.
Thus, without violence, laws cannot be enforced. If laws cannot be enforced, the laws mean nothing. If the laws mean nothing, then nothing stops individuals from acting against the well-being of that society. And if nothing stops individuals from acting against the well being of society, then the society will eventually collapse. It will take longer in societies where individuals are responsible, but it will happen eventually. What keeps the predatory, the sociopathic, from gaining full power over individuals aiming to make society function, is the threat of violence against them.
Thus, the notion that “violence is never the answer” is a laughable one. We teach (or rather, our governments teach) our children that violence is wrong, that they must never use it no matter what. The aim of this is to create a society of slaves who will never protect themselves when abused.

This is sort of LEFT-slanted take on what’s causing division in America. She makes the issue about race and identity, claiming that white men are the ones rising up due to their loss of institutional power; when in reality, the issue is more broadly a conflict between right and left, both of which have supporters from various backgrounds. Right DOES NOT mean “white,” and left DOES NOT mean “all other minorities,” but unfortunately, that is the mindset these dividers want you to have. It’s the mere attempt to make all of our conversations about identity and race, the thing that prevents progress and increases division. Stop pitting people against one another based on identity and find common ground with your fellow human.

I think Dr. Walter is absolutely right about social media. For all of its positive attributes, social media content in its current state has posed a real problem for societies, both in the U.S. and abroad. Just looking at the U.S., it is a serious enough problem that we cannot just throw up our hands and say “First Amendment” and do nothing!
Right now, powerful private corporations and their billionaire owners, representing a miniscule of our population and motivated by their own selfish interests, are in control of the algorithms that in large part control what is brought to our attention on social media. There is at present a lack of control, regulation and influence by the broader society, electorate, citizenry and elected government. These powerful private corporations and billionaires/oligarchs are not primarily concerned about promoting the broader public interests, civics and ethics that help maintain a peaceful, healthy democratic society. Instead they are primarily interested in maximizing their own profits and power. The algorithms which these companies have designed, maintained and use serve their own purposes and not necessarily the public good. As we have seen, this is very dangerous in a democratic society because the algorithms often promote divisiveness and can be weaponized to allow lies and propaganda to flourish.
While it is a difficult task, I believe that the U.S. needs to tackle this problem and put in place some regulatory scheme for social media consistent with our national values as embodied in our Constitution, our evolving law, and our social norms that promote peace, justice and stability.

Barbara F. Walter is a “civil war expert” and she worked with the CIA. The same institution that is the main factor creating regime change coupes, color-revolutions and civil-wars around the world. Funny how none of the “experts” came to that conclusion? The root cause…
She lost all credibility when she said she was working with the CIA in the first place. More so when she stated that the CIA doesn’t spy on its own citizens and then – of course – more Russia-gate conspiracy nonsense that has been debunked so many times at this point it is ridiculous.
If the US has a civil war it will be – very simply – because the intelligence agencies want to keep the working class and the poor fighting each other. To prevent us from looking up at our true exploiters and unifying to fight against the bitter class war we are being subjected to.
The revolution starts in the mind – through education – and in the heart – through moral conviction. Propaganda like this must be called out for exactly what it is.

Prof. Walter is a biased leftist academic who doesn’t use mathematical and econometric models to substantiate her allegations, which amount to nothing eles but opinions. Walter forgets that correlation doesn’t imply causation and she stops at correlation with her two variables that predict civil wars. Furthermore, her suggestion to curb political violence is for states to sanction, restrict and censor social media is the very reason why people mobilized on January 6th, which is in and of itself the real threat to democracy. There can’t be a democracy without free speech, and this is why the first amendment of the American constitution deals with freedom of speech. It baffles me that TED and people stop to listen to this demagogue who has a clear axe to grind and applaud her litany of fake data and allegations under the guise of academia.

A very interesting talk. Especially now that Trump has been indicted multiple times. But a civil war here would not be region based like the prevous war. So it is more complex now. There are purple states and blue cities inside red states and vice versa. It would most likely be race based and or ideological warfare in every city. Or rural vs urban. It would be extremely complex. And everyone would end up worse off.

I was very interested in what a Ted talk about this topic would hold however… oversimplification anyone? I really hope she doesn’t represent how the CIA actually views these things because I don’t know that I have ever heard such an incredible oversimplification of so many global geopolitical issues that led to civil war in many nations. Then her solution?!? What? I am ALL about adjusting the algorithm, but are you telling me that step is the key to preventing our civil war? That’s it? I’m sorry I don’t buy that simplified view of the layers of issues we are dealing with here.

Christianity isn’t an ideology. It’s a religion that some have taken and converted into an ideology. In heretical Christianity, and every other kind of ideology, there might be peace but it will be the kind fostered by slavery and will lead to an increasingly more solidified slavery. That is the end of every ideology. Identity politics may or may not lead to slavery but it will never lead to peace, just an endless state of chaos.
Ideology or identity? I say neither is a solid foundation for building peace.

The problem is that immigrants come flooding from other countries because of their corrupt political systems that have robbed them…and want to fundamentally change America into the countries they came from. And when our country is fundamentally changed…where are they going to migrate to then?
There needs to be a movement to keep the US Constitution whole.

I try to be even handed in my evaluations of political positions, but I don’t see how it’s possible to describe the two greatest factors in predicting civil was as broken democracies and identity politics, and then make everyone of your examples and concerns come from the political right. Identity & grievance politics have been a bastion of the political left for my entire lifetime, and still are today, and I would say both side of the political aisle have worked hard at weakening our democracy. I just can’t take anyone seriously who claims expertise then follows that up with “my side good, your side bad”.

For instance, both NAFTA and the China trade bill were overwhelmingly supported by Republicans and the majority of opposition came from Democrats. So the CIA hires experts like this woman to look at civil wars. Sorry I don’t know her qualifications. Fairly good diagnosis, but a clueless, simple-minded solution ! . She seems to know little about economics, law or politics. She wants us to “not amplify ” hate speech. Who determines that kind of censnorship?
Then she suggests more social welfare. White males are not upset by the lack of a minimum wage or minimal health insurance. And the minimum wage only applies to 1% to 2% of workers ! Such laws destroy good, entry-level jobs that poor people need.
How about just having a government that does not favor the lazy, the less competent, the minorities, the self-proclaimed victims; the majority females and the partially disabled over better qualified , males, caucasions and the hard-working middle class. Compassion can become a crutch. All my drug addicted friends survive on numerous welfare programs. $20 billion for the homeless in the last decade mostly made the problem worse !
When people see the federal prosecutors and the top FBI colluding and lying to favor Hunter Biden and his $ billions; and take down Trump for a poor choice of words or errors of judgment, then some people start to hate the government and think of protesting and even violence. In nearly every civil war this is a feeling of corruption and untrustworthy government. It is not just materialism, it is also morality that brings good changes and sometimes that goes awry into civil war that we try to avoid.

Sharia Law is incompatible with US Constitutional Law. Regular Union wages will drop to “a higher minimum wage” as the government promotes immigration. Wages will flatten, promoting ‘equity’, as they are in Cuba where doctors are paid 20 cents per hour. Artificial Intelligence will eliminate sales people and secretaries. 1 – The CIA can’t gather data in US citizens, but you, as a private contractor for the CIA, have that data… and where did you get it from? Ahahaha

1st part was kind of interesting and insightful, 2nd had a neolib/WEFfy vibe to it. Who decides what “conspiracy theories” are whether they should or should not be muzzled? Freedom is an illusion with the “othering” of unconventional viewpoints, this woman sounds somewhat like she is advocating for a “Demolition Man” like society with “freedom” allowed within a strict set of pretty arbitrary guardrails.
And if people want to limit immigration, which I am not strongly in favour of but can understand it, then so be it. Closing the Mexico border for example seems like a pretty reasonable thing to me, at least illegal immigration should be curtailed even if treating the underlying causes still needs to be addressed. That’s the kind of view she’s looking to shut down it seems to me.

Capitalism is doubtless a strong motivator for peace through commerce. It is likely the number one reason the Soviet Union collapsed. But colorblind, non-ethnic meritocracy is the way to ensure that the most qualified are the leaders, enhanced by a free and unbiased press. The education system, automation, and entitlement system in the US has undermined the middle class, and without a vibrant middle class with agreed upon cultural norms, we can expect conflict. Furthermore, the black population is the the ethnic minority that is being displaced by illegal immigration, poor education, and failing cultural norms, and is the locus of current violence and criminality. I believe that Ms. Walter is mistaken in her implication that it is the white population that is threatened by “replacement theory” fears. It is the black population that is fomenting hatred for the immigrant population that will result in internal violence. This is most clearly seen with the alignment of asian and hispanic voters with the Republican and Conservative candidates that has occurred in the last two voting cycles, and the BLM riots that are a symptom of black disenfranchisement. She further, misreads South Africa’s instability, whose agriculture is at the precipice of nationalization and famine due to unqualified leadership and racial envy.

Our credit rating has also been downgraded twice due to political debt ceiling brinksmanship. First by S&P during the financial crisis in 2011 and again by Fitch more recently citing our inability to govern ourselves and our high level of national debt due to insufficient tax revenue. Both times it was the result of a conservative power play against a democratic president. President Obama wanted to recover from the financial crisis which became agonizingly slow due to trickle down monetary policy, and Biden wanted to recover from CoVid lockdown and to rebuild our infrastructure while creating jobs as interest rates rise.

I was married to a Russian woman who had left the Soviet Union before the collapse. She had been born in 1940 and lived through not only Stalinism but what came after much of the things done by the communists. She actually had been a Russian Olympic athlete in the 1960s and after an injury became a very prominent civil engineer there even getting to know Mr. Gorbachev very well. I will never forget when one day she said to me ” communism gives everyone an equal share of nothing but poverty and misery”

Thank you, this was very well presented. I only wish it was longer. There are other factors involved too tho, especially human nature, which is one of the things we seem to know least about. Especially where it intersects with the natural world – is the most dangerous. Humans are not autonomous from nature. That’s a delusion of modern society. And in the case of the playbook for the US going down in flames, it’s not simply in the hands of Donald Trump: but he appears to actually BE the playbook. He’s Trump.
