Meta’s Instagram and Threads apps now filter out political content from people you don’t follow by default. During a U.S. election year, Instagram’s billions of users now won’t be able to see anything the algorithm deems political unless they purposefully change their settings.

Some users find the changes alarming as Instagram has become a key tool for community organizing and disseminating information. Instagram’s definition of political content is broad, including “laws, elections or social topics,” and the change is just one of many recent content decisions by Instagram and Meta to distance itself from politics and reduce user exposure to news.
