I have literally *ZERO* interest in living in a world where the leaders of the nations feel the need to USE nuclear weapons.
If you look at the nuclear weapons nations now possess, if some asshat leader ever uses them, then that leader needs to be assassinated immediately by any nation capable of doing so.

As for converting a missile silo into a fancy bunker house… Yeah, so? People with lots of money feather their nests.
What good is surviving an apocalypse if you have to turn into a Morlock to survive?

Already live in Kansas. I’d rather live on a yacht in the middle of the ocean away from any civilization stupid enough to shoot off a nuke.

When you lure rich, powerful people to stay comfy in the aftermath of doomsday, you’re diverting their attention to fight for peace and prevent it instead. I argue that this is as criminal as educating people in using weapons just to live. USA is a nation I cannot understand

  9. Jonathan Mayer

    July 7, 2020 at 4:00 pm

1 person in the US does NOT have access to launching missiles. Its more complicated than that.

If all of the video was practical then there’d be only few guns(preferably something very reliable) using same caliber rounds and LOTS of ammo stockpiled

“So secret, I can’t tell you where it is.”
    *Shows overhead drone footage.*
*Says we’re not in Kansas anymore… We’re below Kansas.*

Anyone found it on Google maps yet? This whole thing seems more like a gimmick than an actual bunker.

Kinda absurd. If it ever came to pass that they needed to hide from others trying to kill them, they have built a tomb for themselves, with ventilation shafts that can be filled with water or gasoline, what have you. Just silly. Without an army above ground to defend it, you’re just done.
But isn’t this all obvious? In a world where everything has fallen apart, those who cooperate and trade with others will live the best possible lifestyle. So this is just wrong on every level. It is a hefty investment in failure.

Clearly, having money is not a sign of intelligence.

I don’t understand why anyone would want to survive a nuclear war, I certainly wouldn’t. Society and government suck enough now, Imagine the nightmare dystopia survivors would have waiting for them.

  19. Claire Reilly

We spent a full day at these bunkers and I was not done exploring! And it was weird how homey it felt, even though I knew we were so far underground. But my question was: What about your neighbours?! Would you handle five years in a bunker if you couldn’t stand the person in the next apartment over??

No one knows how many nukes Israel has. They’ve never even admitted to having any. The nuclear winter scenario was debunked decades ago, which is why no one seriously mentions it in the scientific communities.

I think the subtext here is that many of the rich are worried enough about the state of the world to make plans for saving themselves, but too greedy and selfish to stop the causes that could lead to the end. Seeing Claire’s characteristic outtakes mitigates the anxiety of the topic by seeing her comfortingly familiar style. Maybe a good video would be to show us, non millionaires, how to line a big box with foil and make a cheap doomsday shelter! ????

Let’s say you live in New York and the bomb drops your burned up before you can get a Lyft to take you to the airport to get to your survival condo in Kansas.

  41. Forward Synthesis

    July 8, 2020 at 4:34 pm

“That explosion takes huge amounts of smoke into the stratosphere…”

This is a misrepresentation of nuclear winter. The nuclear winter model is based on mass firestorms and is not merely a product of the nuclear explosion itself producing smoke. There are many critics of nuclear winter now that particulate models have been refined since the gulf war fires, and there were many earlier papers with blatant errors, such as a paper that scaled firestorms linearly off the yield. It may be more of a nuclear autumn in the end, though let’s not be in a rush to find out.
