3d printing homes is expensive af, unless its a huge copypaste neighborhood, if you enjoy ugly eastern european or chinese blocks.

@ESC some people would just like 4 walls and a roof. And with anything if u start mass producing then costs come down. I just struggle with all this money being spent by billions being being tourists etc when there is so much else money can be spent on for the good of the human race.

@Elizabeth Moser
I think empty unaffordable flats are the bigger problem in that case, because we have plenty of those.

@ESC not in 3rd world countries. I’m thinking of people still in Nepal with no homes after that horrible earthquake that was years ago. Cost of materials etc mean people still haven’t rebuilt and living in lean toos and shacks. Then there is the issues in India with massive slums

I love how they’re acting like having people live in a confined space for a year is like a novel thing, as though people with existing health conditions in covid times haven’t already been experiencing for the past year… Still pretty cool though. My only concern is that it looks like the “lavacrete” requires water, I feel like we should be using something like rammed earth or sintering given the relative lack of liquid water.

Maybe NASA should dedicate this effort to sustainable housing on earth. Am I the only one who saw one of these homes, and thought I’d like to live in one (and not as some science experiment)?

We’ve already had our year in isolation with limited access to the outside world because of covid. NASA should pay all of us.
