Inside India’s Astonishing Solar Revolution | Kanika Chawla | TED
In 2014, the world’s second largest coal consumer made a bold promise: to increase its solar capacity from three gigawatts to 100 gigawatts in just eight years. Many people called it overly ambitious, but energy expert Kanika Chawla saw the opportunity of a lifetime. She tells the story of how India became a solar powerhouse,…

In the US, our solar and batteries received a 30% tax credit, and still my 26 panels and 2 powerwalls are insufficient to even run my home and even with the tax credits, it will likely never pay for itself. But it’s “clean” I’m told…and because it’s “cheap energy.” Hmmm….
@ziploc2000
October 23, 2025 at 12:27 pm
What’s your latitude and cost per kWh from the grid? We’re at 44 degrees, 10c/kWh and our 26 panels cover energy needs most of the year.
We now run two EVs so that’s an extra electricity use, but still we generate enough to still sell back excess energy to the grid.
We expect to pay back the original investment in 10-15 years. The more expensive your electricity, the faster the payback for generating your own.

It sounds like you have a big house. A big house is expensive to own.
@stereodark
October 23, 2025 at 6:07 pm
That’s strange. I have 24 panels and 1 power wall and I generate 13.000 kWh/year and consume 10.000. I live in Switzerland which is definitely not close to the equator. Sure I buy some electricity from the grid in winter but 5y in the investment I paid off 50% of it. It will pay itself in 9-12 years and then it will continue working for a few more for free. Just looking at the economics, sure it’s not like winning the lottery but it’s a good investment and even better if your electricity cost is higher or latitude is better than mine.

What she omitted to say is that despite this enormous investment of money and resources, India produces barely 17% (during the day, while it drops down to 0% during the night) of its energy with solar. And making solar capacity five times bigger within 2030 won’t make its electricity production five times higher. That’s not how renewable energies like solar and wind work, the examples of Germany or California should have taught that to us.
@freeheeler09
October 24, 2025 at 3:15 pm
Michael, batteries and solar are democratizing energy and storage! For the first time since wood fire places and ox carts, regular people can generate and store their own energy!
We are in California, an amazing place to live except for the high cost of living. We pay 35 cents per kWh for electricity and $5 a gallon for gas. The high price is mostly because of the extreme profits and operating costs of our corrupt, oligarchic, fossil fuel and electricity cartels.
But, 80% of the 8 billion people in the world live at latitudes where solar and batteries are now the most cost effective and efficient ways to produce and store power. Installation is unnecessarily difficult because citizens don’t get the favorable financing that the oligarchs do. So solve that problem!
And a concurrent revolution is in energy demand. Our well insulated, all electric home, even before we install solar and batteries, had power bills 75% lower than our fossil fuel neighbors.
Our solar and batteries were initially expensive. And the US under Trumpler no longer provides meaningful tax or other assistance for citizens to become energy independent.
But, the Return on Investment for our system will be seven years without our EV and four years powering our car at home.
The big impediment is the lack of low income financing and grants, etc. to help people worldwide become energy independent with solar, heat pumps, induction stoves and batteries.
We give grants and tax breaks to corrupt corporations and billionaires to build huge gas and coal plants. And even the big solar plants are only a way for oligarchs and shareholders to suck wealth from working families.
Don’t Feed the Fascists!
Install solar and batteries and take your energy production and storage off grid!
@monkfishmondfinsternis3162
October 24, 2025 at 6:20 pm
Here in germany solar combined with battery storage is already cheaper than using gas for electricity. (Fraunhofer institute) Also, Wind is the biggest source of electricity in germany today.
Holding in to fossil fuels makes electricity more expensive, makes your country dependent from oil dictatorships and – last but not least – slowly destroys our stable climate and the future of our children.
@Poltik
October 25, 2025 at 12:11 am
In India , while we are not focusing much on batteries, but on 3 stage nuclear reactors and hydro power.
Of the 3 stage , nuclear reactors, 2 are done , hopefully we can get breakthrough with 3rd stage.

The solar generating space has to be supported with fast reacting peaking power the most natural gas expensive form of generating electricity. This makes solar and wind power the most expensive form of generating electricity with natural gas. If solar and wind power saved fuel that would be greatly promoted. Global warming fell from 1.1°C in 1991 to 1°C in 1992 where NASA reports it today. The cause of global warming is not known.
