How to Stop the Metaverse from Becoming the Internet’s Bad Sequel | Micaela Mantegna | TED
“The metaverse is already on fire, and we haven’t even built it yet,” says TED Fellow and video game lawyer Micaela Mantegna. She lays out why the metaverse is at risk of inheriting some of the internet’s worst traits, like unchecked surveillance — and shows how we could redirect its fate through new laws grounded…

What the heck?
The Metaverse is going to be the best thing to happen to humans after the internet.
With the Metaverse, I can attend TED Talks virtually, and watch the talks at any angles I want, and I don’t have to be confined to a seat. And the best of all, I don’t have to travel around the world to get to it.
I fully support the Metaverse. The virtual world is better than the real world. The elimination of travelling (and queueing) is a big enough reason to support it. I want to see things, but I hate the travel.
Remy Lebeau
August 31, 2022 at 3:42 pm
Yeah, it’s not like you can already see things on a pc monitor and visit virtual spaces and meetings.
Technolus
August 31, 2022 at 4:27 pm
@Remy Lebeau it’s not the same. Vr can enable real time face to face talks with the speaker (or anyone really), sharing of 3d models you can explore with others, and most of all, it can enable all those seamlessly at the same time.
It’s how online learning has a retention rate of like 25% and vr increases it to 75%.
While being digitally generated the brain interprets it as reality, possibilitating the range of experiences of first person interactions.
Remy Lebeau
August 31, 2022 at 4:42 pm
@Technolus We already have facetime, which is real time face to face talking. Let me know when you have the Holodeck from Star Trek, THEN I’ll be impressed.
I never said VR couldn’t have a place in our modern world, but the things listed by the original comment were absurd considering they already exist with normal tech.

@Technolus maybe cities might be wrapped up in NFTS or tropical islands full of paid-off houses. At the moment it’s just a joke with silly jpegs.
Technolus
September 1, 2022 at 12:16 am
@Steve Molloy Yeah there’s a lot of people bothered that someone else is buying overly expensive jpegs. I really don’t care, it’s not my money, they do with their money whatever they wish.
But blockchain hasn’t been playing much of a role in the metaverse. when talking about metaverse people are mostly referring to virtual reality, more specifically social vr.
things like meta horizons, vrchat, rec room, neosvr and others. Of all these, only neos embraced blockchain but it didn’t go very well (not too sure exactly why, but the crypto hype and the issues it brought might have played a role).
I know there are blockchain projects like decentraland, but last I checked they didn’t support vr, which I found baffling.

Super speech.
I don’t know how many time humanity needs to complete the transfer process, from real life to virtual life in metaverse, but I don’t think so long.
Anyway is the perfect way to escape from all the troubles wich affect contemporary society.
A lot of people sad and bored about their complicates lifes, who can live in a different world maybe with a monthly payment, as all common digital services.
You’re poor and you can be faking rich, yo’re man but you can be a fake woman, you’re ugly but you can be pretty ecc.
I agree about cyberpunk books as snow crash, and them ready player one could be a sort of premonition about our future, where everyone could be something different, because life conditions becoming worse than before. Sometimes everyone of us want to escape and start something different, maybe not in the whole life but just in some parts. And it will be very hard to create right laws for that world in few time. Could be the next great change, or maybe not, but the perfect words are the last of this speech by this super girl, we could be so lucky to create a brand new society, why don’t we try
Technolus
August 31, 2022 at 9:29 pm
It’s not going to be a transfer, it’s going to be a merge. Aspects of one carried to the other and vice-versa.
Looking at where it’s at today, you can still tell the rich from the poor: rich have better technology, and more expensive assets in-game. Politics and nastiness and harrassment carry over too. But you do get to fly or look like whatever you fancy, and unlike real life when you see someone you don’t like you can just block them and they are (usually) gone for good.

What a huge topic to try to cover in just a few minutes. As ever, in human terms, turning ethical systems into realistic frameworks is great in theory but, as ever, the human element will always corrupt any system. I believe, aas we hear in this talk that robustness in our creations must favour the good intentions and discourage the bad.

@Technolus Considering how vague and meaningless this presentation is I was surprised too. As an adult you do need to conform to an extent when doing public speaking. It’s why you go in for job interviews presenting yourself a certain way to “sell” yourself. It’s just how it is. It’s not about muting your self expression. it’s showing that you’re capable of reading a room which this person clearly lacks.
Technolus
September 2, 2022 at 5:55 pm
@Micaela Mantegna 😅 I’m passionate about the topic.
I use vrchat a lot. From a graphics standpoint it’s way ahead of the competition.
Recently they made a change that many thousands of users were against. Many of us looked for alternatives, but they are not as developed (worse fbt tracking, low quantity of users and user produced content, lack of support for android/quest). Many people returned to vrchat despite being dissatisfied, which shows the power of these companies to keep people in their platforms despite dissatisfaction.
Open standards, self data ownership and interoperability are crucial to keep these platforms serving the community, rather than exploiting the community.
Btw, I find your dressing style choice to be quite on point to represent some of the stylistic and cultural freedom of the metaverse, and how it expands horizons and can translate into increased openness and acceptance of ourselves and others.

@Jjjjj interoperability of assets, decentralization of data, in the meantime you’re somehow seeing support for facebook when she directly spoke out against surveillance capitalism. Good Idea: keeping a work-life balance while also limiting technology so you don’t miss out on life and loved ones unless you have to rely on technology to be in contact with life and loved ones then obviously that main statement isn’t for you
Bad Idea: being on call for work for 24/7 because you have the VR goggles that would put you into a meeting space of whatever work job place that you would have giving you less personal time whereas people hardly have personal time as it is and additionally a way for them to passively report and monitor your home because, the goggles have hella cameras on it to map out the entire environment of where you are. The thing is, I can’t be nor can my group of friends be the only people that will say a random consumer product like tampons or chips or hats, anything and then the next thing you know on Google on Amazon on YouTube on Instagram on Etsy all of a sudden you will get advertisements for exactly what you had previously mentioned either hours before or sometimes a couple of days it depends but, in addition to that, I thought I felt kind of gasoline when ideas of mine would all of a sudden appear either online or in some sort of hire media way like movie or television or anything it can like I don’t necessarily think like a normal person because I don’t have social media outside of YouTube and Reddit only for when I have questions but I also obviously use Google but again all of my friends have experienced this I’ve experienced it for a long time and it made me feel really weird and it made me feel like I couldn’t talk about it but I very much think that they’re listening not to necessarily get anyone in trouble but to get ideas from people because it seems like the creators of Hollywood have kind of gone a bit stale through no fault of their own obviously everyone creative hits a dry patch but I legitimately think that a lot of studios by information from Facebook or Google or YouTube or whatever and probably puts it through some software takes notes of what it thinks and hears what people want or are thinking or their ideas and section it off and just hand it off to the people running the programs using the data that is constantly breached on the majority of the apps that we use. If I need to be the first person to say it then I’ll be the first person to say it but we legitimately need a technology life balance like, it’s not bad to check Facebook or be on your phone or something like that but like if you’re spending more than half the day I mean even if you’re spending a quarter of the day that’s too much. Again, like stated above, if it’s your only means of communication because of let’s say a disability or something like that, obviously this isn’t directed towards your demographic but I’m directing this to the demographic of people who have children of people who have partners that they live with and they see on a daily basis and I say that for the people that go to work and such and to be honest again I understand that sometimes work is the last place a lot of people want to be so that’s how they cope again, if you need technology in a certain way, go for it but there are perfectly normal people out there that are really addicted to their phones and I really only go on to my phone at night which I know that that’s a very hypocritical statement because you’re not supposed to be on your phone at night but I unfortunately have health issues and I can’t control when I’m able to sleep. It’s like a lack of circadian rhythm. So I will pop on at night and write a couple of things and then I’ll try to relax and eventually fall asleep but I know when I would hang out with my friends it would bother me because seven times in 5 minutes or less people will have been on their phone or have checked their phone and put it back or be texting and again, I’m not a crazy person, if it’s something necessary that they need to get back to that’s literally why cell phones came to be in the first place is because they wanted to smush everything that they could together so you didn’t have to carry around a Walkman and a calculator and a camera and a video camera and a pager and a mobile phone all at once. People were getting really tired of it and So eventually smartphones became a thing but now because of people who are skeezy we are having our information constantly hacked and used either to put us on unnecessary watch list or like how they’re starting to do in some states they’re doing extensive internet history checks on people who are moving into apartments or trying to rent housing and the landlord can like kick you out if she finds out you have a foot fetish and it offends her Christian ways. The thing is, technology is great and all but it has already been out of control since the mid 1900s when the first voice commanded computer debuted and I think 1952 when did the first computer that could recognize speech was invented. But. Like. Think about it for 5 seconds, there’s a lot of corrupt people in our government. Do you think people who make millions and billions a year give a single crap about you when the people that we elect to give a crap about us don’t give a crap about us? That’s kind of where I’m at is there’s a lot of faceless people behind these companies that are selling to other companies or other countries just so that they can take advantage of our intellectual rights and take advantage of our wants. Like, if you don’t think technology is listening to you and you have an Alexa and you literally turn around and say hey Alexa guess what, it’s been listening to you the entire time waiting for you to address it. It is literally a robot butler, to be honest it wouldn’t be hard for the developers to make it so Alexa would chime in every once in a while if someone around her says something wrong and she fact checks it and says oh no the capital of Vermont isn’t in Burlington it’s in Montpelier. Like, it would be pretty easy for them to just make a mode where Alexa would just be an extra house gas trapped in a little bottle speaker looking thing. But, obviously it’s how you use it that counts so I really do hope that there are good people out there that’s not going to take advantage of how vulnerable this influx of new technology will make us but, hopefully people can have a little bit more decency because I can only imagine what goes on behind the scenes. Actually, there’s a vice documentary episode behind the mask or something akin to that where it’s what a Facebook monitor has to go through in a day or in their job or whatever but I’m going to be watching that soon and so that’s just going to deepen my knowledge that everything you do online can be absolutely traced back to you so be careful of where you go kiddos
