Sadly I live in the EU and over here democracy is dead. On top of things Im a swede and we dont even have a constitutional court so the leaders caan break the constitution as much as they want.. wich ofc really means nothing since the EU dont respect the swedish constitution one bit anyway.

That’s what happens when people are fooled into listening to the blame the EU crowd’s masterminds. They’re the same group who fooled people into voting for Trump, and fooled Trump into believing stupid and hate-filled conspiracy theories. Is that what you want?

Religion is a way to herd the populace without democratic mandate. If a particular activist cause is the right thing to work towards, you can justify it rationally. Using the shortcut of people’s superstitions, emotions and social conditioning is manipulative. It’s open to abuse and has been used in the past to lead to great harm.
Only a benevolent world dictator could ensure that religion was used only for good. Religion will always be in conflict with democracy by its nature.

I don’t really get where you got the confidence to say that America is not a democracy. “[…] a republic is a form of government whereas a democracy is an ideology that helps shape how a government is run.” (from a distinction found on the web). Just to give some context. And where does this democracies always fail come from? If you were consistent, you’d have to say that all forms of governments fail (can’t remember any form of government which hasn’t had its failures throughout the last 2000 years or so). Eventually, democracy, despite all its flaws, is the best we’ve came up so far and I’m pretty glad I grew up in a republic… or democracy?

A bit too preachy for my liking:
1) Isn’t his “Civic Religion” just morality? We just need to internationally agree what morality is because there are certain people who’s morals are warped, mainly by religion
2) What we have isn’t Democracy, I like to call it elected autocracy, a very outdated democratic approximation. We need to go back to the definition of democracy and reinvent it with modern technology. You’ll find it doesn’t look anything like what we have now.

All great revolutions were lead and societies established by “preachy” boring but well meaning men/women like him. People nowadays only want to hear “interesting” things they like said by “interesting” people. Nobody wants their minds challenged by boring preaching which holds a wealth of truth in it.
Yes, it’s just morality, but still people don’t get, whether they believe in God or not. Wonder why?
Because a lot of people love only themselves, and worship money that helps them fashion their life on their own selfish way.
Talking about religion- All mainstream Religions we’re Hijacked a long time ago by power hungry rulers(whether of a country /religious institutions.) and they twist it for their own Profit.
I agree with you that USA Is not exactly a democracy in the truest sense. People are supposed to choose between two gangs of thieves who uses faith in a religion or lack there of on either side as a tool to weaponize their political scam and fool people to believe in their crap. And the election methodology is also flawed aaand the president has too much power and so on..
If by “reinventing” democracy with modern technology you mean some new form of electing leaders that is unacceptable. The problem is that technology no matter how advanced will eventually be hijacked by people with the means to do. Then the choice will be taken away from the people completely.
But I am definitely for using tech to “monitor the performance” of representatives elected “manually”. We need some for of physical way of electing leaders to maintain that human bonding and responsibility we have to our country. Otherwise it will just become another internet Game.

Please don’t confuse freedom and democracy. Just because someone lives in a democracy does NOT mean they have freedom, and vise versa. In this capitalist world, freedom can be bought using money. SEPARATION OF CHURCH & STATE. get informed, get educated, understand why it’s necessary (history repeating ?)
there is no “civic religion”. it’s two distinct entities. ->yes, “spirit” does exist outside of religion; but “civics” needs to be pragmatic, concrete & objective. religion tends to be the opposite. there’s also dogma, that benefits no one (long term)
in America, freedom of religion has become akin to mental illness. You don’t want charia law (…) but insist on religious fundementalist value being written into law .
The paradigm has become too great. The empire is in decline. this proposed confusion is just going to accelerate the demise.
ALL religion is a spiritual crutch. it can help you stand-up when you cannot alone(but most humans have stood for centuries without it), give you a sense of community(generally at the expense of civil society) & calms elders to the inevitability of death.(when spirit permanently escapes earthly law ?)
APOSTASY in civics is probably the better choice. because of dumb discourse like this, it will obviously become the only choice.

Lots of people confused about Republic and democracy. The US is a Republic in which the elected leadership is chosen through a process of democracy. Meaning that the citizens exercise their political power through the democratic process of voting. The US specifically is a Republic which uses the process of representative democracy. Meaning, citizens vote for representatives (electoral college) which will then vote to elect the president. In the US do the citizens vote? Yes (barely). Then it’s a democracy. The US is a Republic witn a federal government state structure and uses democracy as it’s political electoral process (in theory).

Federal democratic republic. Hence why in the US two party system there is a Republican Party (1854) and a Democratic Party (1828). Two sides of the same coin, it is a sort of tribute. Not sure if they intended it that way.

A republic describes the form of rule where personnel is elected for a period of time, as opposed to inheritance.
However, the term republic does not specify how these people got into power. This can be through democracy (the western model), but also through oligarchy or autocracy.
H. G. Bohn writes in “The Standard Library Cyclopedia of Political, Constitutional, Statistical and Forensic Knowledge” on p.640 that “A republic, according to the modern usage of the word, signifies a political community which is not under monarchical government […] in which one person does not possess the entire sovereign power.”
Democracy on the other hand describes a system where the citizens exercise power by voting. It’s not specified on what they vote, however. It can be on all things like in Switzerland, or only a parliament (Germany/the US). How far “Democracy” goes, depends on the definition of the Demos itself. In classical Athens it was every male person, who was a descendant of two citizens and had fulfilled conscription.
Therefore an elective monarchy can be a democracy, if the people (depending on definition) vote for their monarch. See the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth between 1573 and 1795, where over 500000 nobles voted for their ruler, or the papal conclaves as the two primary examples.

Read the founders views on democracy. They knew the shortfalls of it and had no intention on founding one. The Constitution established the purpose of the govt and all laws must be within those boundaries regardless of what the masses want. I’m a democracy 51 percent decide for everybody. That’s only good for you if you’re in the 51 percentile.

Yes pure democracy is two wolves and a sheep discussing what to have for lunch. That’s why human rights and minority protection exists.
However, as ancient Rome clearly showed, a Republic is not infallible in it’s protection against demagogues (nor is democracy as ancient Athens showed). Caesar came into office because in his triumvirate he combined oratory skills with money and military power.
He stayed in power because of his popularity and all but abolished the republic (which his son, Octavianus, finished).
The US says it’s not a “Democracy”, but it is one. More specifically it’s a constitutional democratic federal (union) republic.
– Constitutional, because the written constitution limits and grants the power of office.
– Democratic, because the Demos (people) decide what to do in elections and votes
– Federal (union), because the states have decided to grant power to a central government, but are de jure still sovereign subjects
– Republic, because people are elected into office and don’t inherit them.
You mix thins, when they can clearly be defined as their own terms. Or as Wikipedia puts it:
Democracy is the “power source” (or “how many”), constitutional republic is the “power ideology” and federalism is the “power structure”.
Some Examples:
– France is a democratic unitary republic
– The USSR was an autocratic (one-party), federal republic
– China is a autocratic (one-party) unitary republic
– Saudi-Arabia is an autocratic (one king) unitary monarchy

+Greg Mauchline it doesn’t matter what the founding fathers intended. If I call the sky green, it still is blue. I used Wikipedia to make it easier understandable. I don’t have the muse to translate the books I used in my studies of the laws at a German university.
Democracy, as can be read in Marian-Webster, is defined as “a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections”.
A democracy needn’t be direct as in Switzerland for example, it can also be indirect. The US is an indirect democracy.
You mix up Constitutionalism, Republic and Democracy. It’s Constitutionalism which limits the power of the elected representatives, not the Republic.

A black man is still a black man if he is born in Japan, not a Japanese man. He has no Japanese DNA at all, sjw assclown. Being born on particular land doesnt make you that race. You may acquire citizenship of the land though.

He is addressing the core issue. An interested, concerned electorate when most of us are more interested and concerned with our career, our family, our community or our private interests. What we could use is a simplified, even profound, democracy, designed around human realities, which cannot be corrupted, except by mass corruption.
To get there. Apply the KISS principle.

Democracy should not be a “CIVIC RELIGION”. It should be a “CIVIC LOGIC”. We don’t practice democracy because there’s some creed. We do it because it is the best, or the least bad, system one can find so far.
