In her global exploration of Indigenous design systems, architect Julia Watson researches enduring innovations that could help us counter the challenges of climate change. From floating villages to living root bridges that strengthen over time, Watson introduces us to some of these resilient solutions — and shows how they can teach us to design with nature, instead of against it.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). These methods wont work to save our planet. Until we take care of the biggest contributor to the destruction of our planet which is the animal agriculture industry which is the biggest driver of deforestation, the biggest driver for species extinction, the biggest driver of ocean dead zones, and is responsible for more greenhouse gasses that all of the worlds transportation combine, and uses 1/3 of all of our fresh water, and takes up to 45% of all the land on our planet. What you choose to put on your plate three times is the single most important choice to get us out of the climate crisis and more. It is also responsible for our top14 killer of mankind, including our top one which is heart disease.

My understanding is that it was the ‘environmentalists’ in Australia who prevented the annual forest floor burning from taking place which allowed leaf litter and bush to grow that was the major cause of the ferocity and speed of the forest fires.

    • William Chamberlain

      August 21, 2020 at 10:22 pm

No; it was the under-funding of fire agencies, who then could not organise a sufficient number of safe burn-offs.

    • friendlyfire

      August 21, 2020 at 11:17 pm

It’s not the ‘environmentalist’ preventing controlled burns, that is a false narative put forward by climate change deniers and people looking for a simple answer. Most people here in australia with ANY connection to the bush know and understand the importance of controlled burns both from a fire risk management tool and a crucial event in the life cycle of much of our native flora and fauna and its use in maintaining health native ecology. The sad fact is there has been a notable shift in our climate with the window for safe burns where it is neither too wet to burn or too dry and dangerouse has becoming dramatically reduced making controlled burns harder logistically due to a condensed time frame. This added to the increased ‘extreme’ hot weather/wind speed events that we are seeing also where green flora previously un-burnable is dried to a crisp in a 24hr periods creates an extremely complex and dynamic situation where previous fire control and fighting techniques are becoming reduntant and ineffective… at least from a southern nsw/victorian perspective.

This is just Absolutely amazing! I mean, personally, as a child growing up, I’ve had these kinds of ideas in my head. And I’m talking just playing and pretending! Some of my siblings, friends, and I would play outside and pretend we were either living in the woods and surviving productively, or stranded on a deserted island and surviving the same. We came up with all kinds of ideas too. How we’d live under certain circumstances, building structures to live in, how and what we’d eat, etc. Idky, but that’s one of the things we’d do when play pretending.

And she’s right. It works! All of these natural resources we should have NEVER destroyed and forgotten!

Many don’t seem to realize how nature, while replenishing herself constantly, has given humans an abundance we’d need to live and survive together for countless ages! And it was free to do so really.

Sadly, while we’ve been taking and taking, we’ve done nothing to give back in return. And we’ve forgot how this planet has given us so much to live by exhaustively, because mankind have been too wrapped up in greed, hate, and senseless fighting. All of these things, among so many other things, is one sure fire way of killing our planet and all she’s given, all because of profit and gain. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Because of our actions, we are killing ourselves.

Now, if we’d all just stop and listen to feel it, you’ll notice how it definitely feels like (and now it’s becoming more visible) Earth is dying. If we would just give back equally as she’s given, maybe she’d think about living and giving again too! And we’d be surprised at all of the amazing possibilities we are capable of achieving, when we work together.

    August 21, 2020 at 11:51 pm

Meh. Sounds well & good but if you think people are going to spend 15 years to build a root bridge in populated modern cities, good luck. Granted, ancient ways & uses of natural materials can be studied & learned from but to assume they are to be used solely in modern environments is naive. I don’t think anyone hates nature but to use its resources on scale is not sustainable. It will have to be a mix of modern technology & science combined with natural resources that are available.

This video seems like resilient solutions to problems faced by humans of the past, not the present.

A while back I watched a video of some fun, well-done artistic imitations of nature in a park in Singapore (I think). So why not amp it up by amping it back? Sounds about right for the times we are in. Correctly done, it could be absolutly breathtakingly beautiful, I believe. And we’d be supporting this planet that supports us.

I want to share my thoughts but I am not good at expressing? Humans were evolved over many many years? Nature or evolution will solve our problems but modern human is impatient? We think we are so smart and our new technology will take care of any problems? Build walls? Dams? In this mindset we are compressing time? We are not giving nature to give its own solution? Just look at our health system? Drugs for every ailments? We all know body will heal itself if you give time but we are impatient, we want everything now? We need to slow down otherwise nature will destroy us? Why we build houses in river plains? Or close to sea shores? Oh ya we geniuses calculated timings of floods 10 year flood? 100 year floods ? Just to justify screw nature? We see results?
Unfortunately , we live in a world, we want everything now now now? We will destroy ourselves?

root bridges are cool, no doubt. but no insurance company will go for it and it is strength is unclear and it would be hard to test. or am I wrong on this? im sure their are many other codes it would not pass, regardless of how much I would trust using them.
and we do use controlled burns here in the u.s. maybe not enough but we do. and places like California, well, let it burn.. lol

Lol ancient tech = no profit bc it’s so efficient. It become bad for business. That’s why Apple updates their phone software that makes the phone hardware obsolete. AAPL right now has a 2 trillion market cap. They can buy all the forests in the world by simply being wasteful AF.

What the f*ck TED? Why are you closing the Russian channel? Are we inferior people ?? We do not have the right to learn science together with the whole world? But what about everyone’s right to study? TED isn’t just a channel, it’s educational content! The best speakers from all over the world tell us useful things, helping us to understand ourselves, the surrounding reality and the people around! They save lives and inspire us with new ideas! You are fooling a gigantic layer of people with freedom of knowledge! Make an agreement with the owner of the Russian channel, he will be happy to meet you!

Good info, Julia. I don’t only see these ancient engineering concepts as amazing and resilient but I also see them as highly prone to safe innovation and upgrading. I study infrastructure and architecture and civil engineering and I think that especially that idea with the mangrove tree roots can be upgraded so that the roots can be moulded into bridges faster and sturdier, without damaging their resilience, the idea and the plan is in my head but I’m not spilling it here because it’s highly underdeveloped. But your information made it all the more helpful to think of better infrastructure.

In a part of the United States with more than 17,000 years of human history, cultural preservation advocate Tracie Revis is working to turn the Ocmulgee Mounds into Georgia’s first national park and preserve. This park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, bringing the tribal voice back to an area they were forcibly removed from 200 years ago. Revis explores the complex feelings of caring for this land and shows how it’s fostering healing in return.
