Joy, requires you to be grateful for certain little things… like how you are breathing, or being grateful you woke up. Or the fact you can think about those things at all. Joy = Gratitude + Authenticity (Self). You need to be true to yourself (Self) to be joyful, to have self-love for oneself, without the need of external validation for oneself. Accept yourself as you are, not as you should be. No one is perfect.

As an architect I try to ‘add’ joy to building design to make it architecture. ‘Joy’ in architecture, is to me, is the high level of Buildability, Functionality, Objective Beauty and Sustainability. The best example of Joy in architecture is Portmeirion in North Wales. The children see all the built in ‘jokes’, but in adulthood nearly everyone except architects can no longer see the jokes. Why is that?

Joy comes from the _little_ things in life. It raises your blood pressure, by focusing on details. Simple things, like the bubbles in your Champaign or soda, the sand or granite specs on your skin coming home from the beach, or the giggles of a child at a fry the family pet can’t get to scrambling it’s claws on the slippery kitchen floor. If you’ve had enough joy for one day, think the _big picture_ to manage your blood sugar 😉

Love this! Joy isn’t something we have to wait for — it’s something we can create daily, in our choices, spaces, and mindset. Such an uplifting reminder! 💖

Joy is not just something fleeting or childish, but a designable, everyday experience we can cultivate.
