Awesome to see how this is done. So much more behind it then you would first expect. Which is actually a good thing, meaning it feels real and don’t get you out of the illusion when watching a film/playing a game. It’s pretty much sound dialed to 11 that went to performance art school 🙂 Also she seems the person I would absolutely love to spend a day with. Love the passion and she seems like a great person to be around

Foley seems like such a fun, interesting job. I like how the genre of the media actually plays a part in the sounds you make for it, that’s something I wouldn’t have considered. I would have just assumed you’d be matching sounds to what’s on screen, not realizing you can creatively interpret those sounds a bit differently to give different moods.

She has to memorize all sound effects and also innovate new tools to bring out the right sound. This is not easy at all. She also goes further and has separate sound effects for different genres of movies? Well, rationally, genres do not make a corresponding sound different. I think it has more to do with creating variety for the same sound effects in order to get it approved. Very hectic job. And it also makes her very sensitive to all sounds in general when she’s not in her office. She unconsciously categorises all sounds in her life, remembers them and deliberates which of those could be replicated in which specific way. A very demanding job. I am glad she finds satisfaction with it. Also her comment about AI not being able to replace her role, well, I’ll say in time, all things reach an equilibrium. Very illuminating video. I think she in specific relaxes to no sound and quietness.

It takes a special type of person to be a foley artist. To be able to look at something, or a set of things, and hear them as something completely different in a variety of contexts – it’s beyond a skill. Even as Joanna was talking through her process and how she interprets things, it was still blowing my mind and having me ask ‘How!?’.

Her passion for her craft definitely comes across beautifully in this video. Not only does she explain the technical side of the craft but also the aesthetic and artistic motives behind the sounds that she creates which eventually build up the very core of the sound design for the soundtrack. I knew foley was a big part of a game or movie but holy crap, the examples here really showed how much of a huge difference it makes.
Foley artists are literally acting out…. the world. The entire world. Every sound. Incredible

Ngl, I have always thought foley was the most interesting job in the world. You have to create everyday sounds out of mundane objects or objects you would never think to use, what combination of sounds would recreate the desired sound, how does the context of the film change the extreme or subtle nature of sounds. Truly feeds my creative brain 🙂

imagine how boring a movie, tv series, games would be without the music, SFX, VFX, and i trully appreciate these artists who dedicate themselves in creating and perfecting their own craft to its finest to make these films, series, games more believable & appealing to us💁🏻♀️💯💯💯and its never easy to do what they do so it really amazes me to see these things on how they are created and being put into the final product… amazing ! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💯💁🏻♀️😍
