I’m in NO WAY qualified to comment on this but I’m an American, so that’s not going to stop me I guess: I honestly think where movement in robotics gets it wrong (when trying to mimic a human) is not adding a “looseness” to the joints. If I raise my hand, it’s not going to stay in place. I literally would be unable to hold it still because my muscles are holding it up, not a piston or gear. It shakes as it moves, it has a fluid curve to it that could only be achieved via tension rather than mechanical force.

    • John Doe

      February 22, 2022 at 11:01 pm

Tension IS a mechanical force, whether it’s fluid or not. They aren’t really ‘getting it wrong’, they very aware of the robotic mechanical look of movement and are constantly trying to improve it, it’s just much more difficult to make motors that have continuous, fluid, precise & instant movements in so many directions in such a small physical space. The facial expressions in this face are pretty smooth, but take a huge amount of extremely precise individual movements under the surface, and we just don’t yet have the technology to control materials like a human Brain, muscle and skin. We get there… eventually!

Were doomed the rate at which robotics has come on in 20 years is insane, you can mimick a human it’s just that the tech isn’t there were made up in a sense at a nano celluar level, who’s to say we won’t be able to do nano robotics to build up to a fully sized humanoid robot in the next 100 200 years.

  38. Arnav Rawat

    February 23, 2022 at 9:47 am

It’s the jerks and shocks which reverberate through the machine 1:18

Human beings don’t jerk like that, in fact i think the brain actively changes the balance of forces to nullify jerk at the end of a strong movement..

Also human beings are always up oriented against gravity, but the legs dangle about.

In addition to that there is the fast and precise movement of the muscles. Motors never cut it, simple as that

They should use hydraulics with stepper motors as the pumps then you would actually get fluid walking and more steadier movement and it would be very energy efficient compared to servos.

    • Books Rebound

      February 24, 2022 at 1:39 am

I mean I’m sure the team of very smart people have already thought of that. There must be a reason why they’re not using them.

    • nostalgia!

      February 24, 2022 at 2:29 am

Well I guess they are not the most compact thing compared to pneumatics but they can lift more than servos while being more energy efficient even more with stepper motor pumps but that can make the robot vary boxey without clever designing look at Boston Dynamics Atlas that thing is mostly hydraulically driven and despite the hydraulics small size they could lift a lot The robot itself was 193 lbs or around that.

    • Edmond Green

      February 24, 2022 at 4:13 pm

@Books Rebound you’d be surprised. Sometimes people are just too close to the problem to see an answer like this. Sometimes they get stuck in one line of thinking. Other times they’re just too arrogant and think their answer is the best answer.

I don’t know but it’s like your saying that you can make your robots to act like humans so much so that we believe they are alive. So in essence ( for me anyway ) your sort of stating that we humans are not really special, that we are not that dynamic as we are taught to be. Because in just seven prototypes you have been able to bring everything more or less that makes us act human (not to be confused being human). Also, where are we going with this. Are we looking for a robotic body so we can transfer our brain (and everything else associated with it). And live longer or send them to other planets. Just wandering😎👍

    I wonder some things.
    – what is the difference in the model you get for $150,000 and the one for $500,000?

    – The guy said that this is basically a base shell (my words) and that whomever buys it, does their own programming for AI and I would assume, how it interacts with the environment.

    – I’d want to know what programming language the buyer would use to interface with the base software.

    – Does the company provide some training on how to interface with APIs and functionality of Meca?

    – Is there an accessible “learning database” that all units can access to “increase” intelligence? Or is ALL AI and learning only by what the purchaser can develop?

    – Is Meca “modular” so that as improvements are made to hardware, can the new “updated” parts be installed in the main unit? For example, if/when an upgrade can have it walking around will that be made available (for a cost, obviously) to the purchaser? If so, would there be a base-software update as well? AND if YES, would it cause problems with the purchasers’ coding?

So many questions and at the prices asked, one would need to know for sure, what they can and cannot do in their own software development.

I can only imagine what the next 50 years will bring.

I reiterate a person’s comment on a similar video on this. If we are making robots i feel like making a realistic face is too much since their emotions arent even really reflecting anything since they cant “feel”. Wouldnt a simple emoji on a screen be more perfect and practical for these robots? No matter how responsive and diverse they can make an ai’s responses to certain speech patterns, it will never really be an emotion.

If AI ever becomes completely sentient and conscious then I think I’d much prefer it go the way of Detroit Become Human rather than something like Terminator because at least the for the androids in DBH their main goal isn’t to just go out of their way to slaughter all humans, they just want to be free and convince humanity that they’re a new form of sentient life. So yeah I hope that’s the way it goes when AI inevitably becomes as intelligent or maybe even more intelligent than us.

I’m sorry if I get a lot of hate on this. I know my opinion won’t match others and it’s ok.

I understand all of your opinion because IT’S true that it is impressive. I can’t imagine how long it took them and how much test-running they’ve done but we shouldn’t mess with stuff like this.

Like cloning, it’s cool but it’s terrifying and there’s many other things that are just like this that shouldn’t be mess with. We shouldn’t mess with biology. A lot of people already have Siri and talking fridges and etc….but something that looks like a human is just…strange? Immoral? Again, you’re completely intitled to your opinion. I just wanted to share mine.

But on a funnier note, the Simpsons did say we’d have a robot war or something😂

Puppets, cosplay, and costumes in general create life not through realism but through creativity and wonder. Then again, technology like Ameca won’t stay in the world of hard science for long. Hobbyists and creative people in general are already doing incredible things with whatever machine parts they can cobble together

I wonder why we are making human type robots when we really could be creating robots which could do things we can’t. Whether it’s lifting heavier things, reaching further, running faster, more computing (thinking) power – there’s really no need to blur the lines between human and robotics. Robots should do things we can’t, shouldn’t or don’t want to. If they don’t want to mimic humans why are they trying so hard to do so in the actual build? Before the concrete sets on it all we should have some parameters and delineations.
