Every one of Rick Stanley’s clocks is an inventive journey. He makes clocks using everything from bottles to bicycles; each one of them completely unique and accurate. “Even when I’m on vacation I think of different clocks to make,” says Rick, talking about how he always has clocks on the brain. Rick gets inspiration from nearly everything, fueling his whimsical timekeeping inventions.

This reminds me of a dream I had about 45 years ago, in which I became engaged to Hal Holbrook, and his engagement gift to me was an incredibly intricate and lovely pocket clock, a tiny masterpiece of gold, jewels, and wood. Would that it were real…💫

This dude is probably the closest to a spirit animal I could ever come across in real life. He has and does everything I love- Arduino/electronics, woodworking and all the woodworking tools, metalworking and all the metalworking tools, mechanical gears/chains/pulleys/Rube Goldberg-esque devices, and a enormous badass old barn/shop to house it all. Just toss in a few drones/robots and I would legitimately walk out on my family. Dude is living the dream, and he probably makes bank on those clocks…

    Re Daylight Savings Time:
You need to design the clocks to make it easy. That’s an important feature for a clock to have.
Anything microcontroller-based can have a switch that you flip one way or the other.
For the domino clock and others that have a little window that reveals the hour, the housing for that window can rock back and forth one position. In all cases, it shouldn’t take a week to fix them all, but should be trivial enough to change as you walk by without breaking stride.

A big obelisk on the plaza gives you time and date on sunny days. You should know which half of the year you’re in, very little maintenance needed. Not having my own city, I set up a noon marker on the patio doors. Concept clocks are great, gets you thinking about time, and movement in space.

I wouldn’t mind seeing this guy in my area. Would love to see him actually organize tours and ask for donations to continue his unique art and equipment (craft)

Very creative and definitely could be a business (side Hussle).

Sell basically one of a kinda peices to like hotels or offices as a lobby central point of attraction when you are there. Only issue would be maintenance if anything jams or breaks down

Especially that luggage clock, could be sold to a hotel or anywhere you rent a room

Perhaps the reason we are so intrigued about time is because we were originally created as eternal beings, but now, because of the Fall, our physical experience of a life-time is limited by physical death?

  62. Bruce Willis

    May 22, 2023 at 2:03 pm

Doubt he’s going to see this, but would be really cool to see a bell syphon version of the water one, where the minutes reach 60, and everything dumps into the hours and starts refilling the minutes. Would lend itself really well to this. You might not even need electric pumps at all if you did it properly.

I love seeing things like this. I wish I had half his tools. That lathe and bandsaw even… I want my son to know the feeling of wanting or needing an item and the ability to go and make it. Even if that’s all he ever does with the tools he will know he can. I loved building things as a young boy. I didn’t have access to tools or adults that where willing to help me or teach me, so my skills where very limited.

Thanks for your video on Rick’s handicrafts. I really like kinetic sculpture; Rick’s clocks add a timely component to the art/skill of making time pieces.
Also I am old enought to recognise and be able to use his draughting machine. I would also like to suggest restriction valve be fitted to the exhausting port of the air cylinders. In doing so, the exausting air can be regulated, thus ensuring the suit cases open more smoothly.
Thank for an enjoyably spent period of time watching this video.
