As oil and gas companies continue to make record profits off of the same forces driving climate chaos, war and soaring energy bills, it’s become clear that boom times for the fossil fuel industry are bad times for the rest of us, says climate change lawyer Tessa Khan. She asks us to consider the true cost of our reliance on fossil fuels, outlining why the transition to safer, cleaner forms of energy has never been more urgent.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

Soaring energy bills go hand in hand with soaring profits for energy companies. The solution is an honest government that prevents corporations serving their own interests and the 1%. The climate change narrative is richer countries controlling growth for developing nations, and has nothing to do with caring about the planet, and everything to do with **pretending** to care.

for years the general sentiment was a” passive solar was a hippy pipe dream ” now we have the laugh as my 2000 sq ft home at 7000 ft in northern NM is heated by passive solar and about 1/2 a cord per year . With a small 2 kw PV system I have not paid a dime in utilities in over 15 years. This is all owner built while working full time as a doc. Not stating this to brag, but just to show how one of many can solve ones energy problems if willing to put the energy into the task, rather than whinning about how they are getting shafted in energy cost.

    • Don Doodat

      December 12, 2022 at 4:47 pm

I also run my own home on solar panels and wind turbines.

But look at the comments here claiming it isn’t possible, by people who have never tried.

It really is like banging your head against a brick wall sometimes trying to cut through all the disinformation.

    • USA Citizen

      December 12, 2022 at 5:23 pm

Iโ€™m glad youโ€™re using passive solar and pv. I have asthma so anything to reduce wood burning is a great thing. As you know, Northern Europe doesnโ€™t have the same exposure to the sun. They also donโ€™t have the ingredients
for successful hydraulic fracturing of shale gas.

As I understand it, New Mexico relies on natural gas for energy and specifically, electricity. Natural gas is cheap and reliable here in the US thanks to expertise in hydraulic fracking, private ownership of mineral rights, relative rule of law, and good financing. This is difficult to replicate in other countries.

I love that you have accomplished so much while still being a doctor. Humans are incredibly unique. You are an incredible contributor to society. As you know, some of us are broken, busy, overwhelmed, or all three.

I love meeting accomplished people like yourself. I wanted to be like you, but I failed. However, I found acceptance in God thru Jesus Christ. I admire the blessings God has given you. I especially admire your free will choice, as a young man, to sacrifice so much in educational expenses and time to help broken people, like me. That took incredible discipline. I hope you have a great future. God bless you.

Tessa, take an honest look at how the anti fossil fuels path has worked out for the people of Germany.

    • whocares

      December 12, 2022 at 8:31 pm

Well, the problem here in Germany is that we got 40 percent of our gas from Russia, which is no longer available. It is the dependency on gas, not renewable energy. Major problem is the missing long term storage capabilities in form of hydrogen, for example.

    • THATMOFODIRT

      December 12, 2022 at 9:29 pm

@whocares Iโ€™m pretty sure the major problem was relying more on solar and wind for the sake of โ€œclimate changeโ€

    • Don Doodat

      December 13, 2022 at 12:00 am

      @THATMOFODIRT

No, their problem was their reliance on Russian gas, a fossil fuel.

They also shut down their nuclear after Fukushima.

Countries put off renewables for decades and are now regretting it.

Climate cultists are deaf for any measurements, any results even from their own satellites, that do not go along their cherished religion. Intentional ruination of economies, intentional fuelling of war in Ukraine (to blame Putin as long as it takes for WEF plan to nest and solidify), and unsustainable renewables – wind and solar – are reasons energy prices went so high. It is purely political to deny progress in atomic energy development, particularly thorium based MSRs, there are many other areas energy production could be made more efficient, as well as there are numerous idiotic experiments conducted as in California, see Schellenberger’s change of mind after drowning 40bln $.
Have nothing and be happy about it. Eat ze bugz, Tessa. Bon appetit!

The authorities in Europe are destroying their citizens. European fascism and Nazism were just sleeping. Now they have raised their heads again. If 80 years ago European/Western Nazism showed itself as anti-Jewish, what is now showing itself as anti-Russian, Russophobic. The current fascism is not called National Socialism, but is called liberalism. That is, now liberal fascism. All Christian states and those with traditional values must work together to eliminate this abscess, this cancer that sucks the blood of all people. The West, with its liberal fascism, with its terrorist and inhumane regimes, will go to the dump.

From a quick look online it seems it is a petrol shortage that caused most of the problems with cashflow issues from not having tourists due to the pandemic.

That hasn’t got anything to do with ‘going green’.

There are of course some rightwing media who are claiming it is because of environmentalism, but I’m sure you would have checked your sources and not just regurgitated their propaganda without doing your own checks first……. right ?

All talk and no solution to this alarmist agenda. Unfortunately people like this are mentally sick because they will indirectly justify the death of humanity. No fossil fuels means going back to the times before and of the Industrial Revolution.

The war on climate change should not be made to cause humanity to suffer, but to help humanity to realistically work with climate issues that occasionally arise. Yet there are alarmists that will soon encourage the enforcement of restrictions on humanity that will cause massive unrest and detriment to societies, full on human enslavement and restrictions at the behest of governments.

The end does not justify the means.

Nuclear power is currently the only way to get away from fossil fuels and still have acceptable energy costs. As various countries have found (most notably Germany), going too full on with solar and wind etc and not also incorporating nuclear will always result in much higher electricity prices.

    • Don Doodat

      December 12, 2022 at 8:41 pm

What should we do with the nuclear waste ?

Also, if we can’t survive without nuclear power how can we dictate to other countries that they mustn’t have it, or how do we guarantee safety standards in third world countries with nuclear ?

  19. Markus Dammasch

    December 12, 2022 at 8:33 pm

You can beat capitalism by forming out your own capital (money) and buying a stand alone electricity system – easily workable with the right combo of solar, wind, and battery… maybe a diesel generator for the rare backup. But I’m guessing that most people complaining amount capitalism are not prepared to put their money where their mouth is… and if you don’t own your own house or live in an apartment, don’t use that as an excuse, fix that problem first… even if it means moving out in the country where land is cheaper

Why so many environtmentalist are out of touch from the reality? Do they understand that currently the raw materials needed to construct renewable are skyrocketing to the all time high? They blame fossil fuel industry for the record profit, but they dont read the financial reporr that the majority of those companies has reduce the investment significantly. Nobody wants to drill NEW oil.

In short, we are currently trapped in a limbo where raw materials needed to build renewable is sky high, but in the same time fossill fuel will be higher in price as well for few years ahead due to limited new investment.

Transition needa to planned. If you rush for renewable, like what we currently did, the price for raw materials shoot up. And you guys banned China, despite the cheapest technology is coming from China.

The fail is in the hypocrisy. Environmentalist refuse to acknoledge that you need fossil fuel to mass produce renewables. All the mining industries relly on diesel for their machine. The cheapest manufacture needs coal. The lithium and nickel is a major source of environtment and labour abuse.

Dont be short sighted. We live in interconnected world. We live in a transition periode. We cannot leap frogging the process

It’s been very easy for politicians and a media focused on short-term news cycles to dismiss. But that

    has now changed forever.
Ms. Truss had known that the British people are stronger, but might not known they are so acute to

criticize the point of her policy. I remembered it was a rainy day she was inaugulated.
A descendant of immigrant the talker also might be. she expressed how she trust on Mr. Sunak with

    the word ‘changed forever’.

Fossil fuels isn’t the issue and fossil fuels have yet to be proven to be a limited resource. There was 100% a proven movement among educators paid for by the Rockefellers to push this ideology into your school’s since they controlled all the controlling shares in oil. Exact same thing they did with oil based pharmaceuticals. The issue is globalism and the global banking system. Hitler obviously was a tard, but Germany rose to prominence in a very short amount of time and the world was in awe of it. It wasn’t because it was energy dependent on Russia. God bless!!!
