How Apple’s 8K VR headset could lead to what comes next

Reports say an eye-tracking, lidar-equipped, dual-8K display VR headset could be wildly expensive but could also be the road to AR glasses. Here’s what’s been reported, and how it connects to technology we’ve already seen.

Remember when the Iphone first hit the market? OK, you were ten years old. “They” said the price was too high and no one would pay for that huge touch screen. I sat through many meetings with cell phone marketing guys that said exactly that in 2007. Well today’s VR headsets look like the Commodore 64 of VR to me. Apple will certainly fix that with 8k displays. When driving race cars in the simulator it doesn’t do you much good when the corner in the distance that you are approaching at 180 mph is only being drawn with 16 pixels.

does seem a way too expensive windows mixed reality costs 160 in b condition at cex you could buy 24 windows hp mixed reality with both joy cons for the price of one of these you could build a budget gaming rig for 100ish using a dell optiplex and a gt 1030 acer monitor for 60 pound corsair hs30 for 30 pound refurbised and a mee too z56 a mechanical keyboard 25 pound logitech g203 for 18 pound vic tsing small mouse pad 4 pound 237 pound setup you could get 10 budget gaming setups for the price of one of these headsets depending on what vr and optiplex you pick could do light vr gaming at low resolutions with some tweaking in some games i mean just look at lowspecgamer mans done vr on less and his many videos

If the future is a $3000 VR headset, then my all mean stay with the current generation. If these companies think that they will sell a product more than a person’s monthly income then pls don’t. A phone that hasn’t been changed for 3 years and now doesn’t includes a charger is fine

I don’t think it will be underwhelming, but it will be useless for sure. There’s no computer, much less an apple computer, that can run any VR game at 8k resolution. I don’t see a point, especially when 4k VR is so crystal clear. Focus on widening FOV or something, not specs that nobody needs.

    • Keyz Keaton

      February 8, 2021 at 1:46 pm

@gu3z1 the human eye can’t even detect 8K 🤷🏾‍♂️ so it becomes pointless it just starts become numbers that they’re rattling off

I love my PSVR but I think it works well because of the headband which helps balance the weight and means your neck doesnt struggle over the hour or two of wearing. My brother has the quest and you notice the front loaded weight straight away and then during gaming it becomes a burden. yes you will get used to it but that is already a tall order to ask for many people who arent prepared for VR. It needs to be as versitle as possible to introduce it to the masses.

  35. Gary Morrison

    February 8, 2021 at 12:12 pm

I don’t think there’s much value in 8K resolution for a headset: Human vision is simply not that resolute!

8K does make sense for extremely large displays used for what might be called “surround vision”: essentially the same idea as I-Max. A screen where you are free to move your head and pan your vision around the display. At any one instant in time, you’re looking at somewhere around an HD screen’s resolution piece of the larger screen.

If the goggles move with your head, and it repaints the image in react to your head movements, then you don’t need much more than 4K. We will still move our eyes around within that 4Kish image, so you can certainly argue for higher than HD resolution, but higher than that, our eyes seem very unlikely to be able to see much difference above 4K.

Sorry to be transparent and point out the obvious that sooOOOOooo many appear %o miss. 1) apple always price ‘new’ technology high as they can limit their risk by producing few number and also than release a more mainstream product 1 year later the the paying ginne pigs have done their job. 2) they always release a rumored high price so everyone will report ‘oh that’s not so bad’ when they actually announce a slightly lower price that without the softener would have been regarded as ridiculously expensive 😂🤣 so obvious to any behavioral scientist 👨‍🔬

I don’t think VR will go mainstream until lightweight glasses that don’t make you feel claustrophobic become reality. So yeah basically Tony Stark level stuff. When they hit that level, they will be expensive $3-$5k. But at that point it’ll be like a cellphone in that everyone’s gotta have it.

I’ve jumped into the apple ecosystem but I would in no way shape or form spend 3k on a VR headset when i can get a Quest 2 much much cheaper and the quality is awesome…

You need a particular type of PC? That’s so vague. He means a $2000 to $3000 gaming PC or laptop. The problem about gaming PCs and Especially laptops is that they get old very fast. I mean if you had a 400 to 500 dollar GPU (the graphics chip) from 2019, the 400 to 500 GPu of 2020 is nearly twice as fast. It’s a losing battle every year. Even a scalped PS5 will be less than a gaming PC, and PS5 will be relevant for 7 years. Try playing a 2020 AAA title on a 7 year old Gaming PC and it’s not gonna be good. Don’t buy PS5 or Xbox Series at scalped price. You will get one by the end of 2021 or mid 2022 at retail.

To match the resolution for just the 2° center of your sight you need about 8K per eye. (The rest of the approximately 180° view only need about 1K, if even that.) However—unless you can manage to create an 8K display that mechanically moves with your eyes (or perhaps uses movable mirrors or some other solution.)—you’d need displays for each eye that has a resolution similar to what a 360K display can present to cover the approximately 90° total field of vision the 2% center of the eye can focus on (by moving the eye). Even if only a small part (the place your eyes focus on) of that display need to present high-res images at any given time.
