What if we could better understand the world’s biggest challenges simply by looking at a map? Jack Dangermond, a pioneer in geographic information system (GIS) technology that powers the digital maps people around the world use every day, speaks with TED technology curator Simone Ross about how his team is building a geospatial nervous system: a global, interconnected GIS network that reveals patterns, visualizes trends — and could transform the way we make decisions about nearly everything.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). This is excellent! If you think he has Zoomed out too much (if you’re one of those who doesn’t get it), think of concrete examples and you’ll see…

When different specialists use the tools of their field to analyze and attempt to solve problems, the solutions are limited by their training and the tunnel vision of that particular domain. When we look at multiple domains and think holistically, we come up with better solutions. It seems obvious – but it’s so infrequently done that it’s worth emphasizing.

I’d love to see how GIS could be applied to increase equity in K-12 education.

The biggest failure of the current educational system is instead of bringing up systems thinkers and multidisciplinarians it manufactures workers to make the money world go around for the wealthy. He missed the most important that it’s not the change of technology we need; despite a huge number of techs that always promise to save the world we haven’t solved any of the existential crises we’ve been facing for decades. In fact, techs in the money world just exacerbated those crises. What we really need is a change in our value system.

Well it does seem that our brains have become more in-sync recently especially since we’ve become adapted to technology that is designed around our behaviors, it only seems inevitable that they’re going to create a way to link us up like neurons in a brain, gradually we’ll all share the same music humor & inner dialgoues. We are already behaving as a nervous system through new technology, now they want an overlay to see our behavior on a collective mass scale, then create an interface that allows them to influence it.

Geospatial? Does this person know that “geo” refers to Earth?
Of or relating to analysis of geographical data from multiple sources and technologies, using statistical methods and often resulting in computer visualization of locations under study.

This is precisely what we need, but make a public version, like a geo-spatial data-display sandbox, akin to iNaturalist and Wikipedia, bringing product and service costs and contexts into a visual comparative geospatial framework, customized to user interests, with the core goal of removing shame or outrage from the individual encounter with information and replacing them with curiosity and community. We have all the ingredients to make the ultimate “organ” of civic virtue, now.

(This has been my great passion, also. Not knowing about Dangermond, some friends and I started an NGO to get the ball rolling… I’m over the moon to finally find an organization intent on this same goal!)

Surviving the early days as an AI startup isn’t just about making the technology work, it’s about hiring the right people, avoiding costly mistakes, and standing out in a crowded market.

This week on Build Mode, Isabelle Johannessen sits down with Jaspar Carmichael-Jack, founder and CEO of Artisan, a fast-growing AI startup building AI employees for sales. Best known for its viral “Stop Hiring Humans” campaign, Artisan is rethinking outbound sales with AI, while still betting on hiring exceptional human talent.

In this episode, they break down what it really takes to build and scale a venture-backed AI company, from Y Combinator to rapid growth.

This conversation covers:
→ Startup hiring mistakes every founder should avoid
→ Lessons on firing, team building, and company culture in early-stage startups
→ The strategy behind bold, controversial marketing that drives growth
→ How AI is transforming sales, hiring, and the future of work
→ What founders get wrong about the necessary roles needed for a scaling startup

This conversation gets to the heart of building a startup: making the right hires early or paying for it later.

Apply to Startup Battlefield: We are looking for early-stage companies that have an MVP. So nominate a founder (or yourself): techcrunch.com/apply. Be sure to say you heard about Startup Battlefield from the Build Mode podcast.
TechCrunch Disrupt: If you’re thinking about applying to Startup Battlefield, then October 13 to 15 in San Francisco, we’re back for TechCrunch Disrupt, where the Startup Battlefield 200 takes the stage. So if you want to cheer them on, or just network with 1000s of founders, VCs, and tech enthusiasts, then grab your tickets.
