Most people in the future will not be programmers like in the past. They will select pre built high level functional objects and link them together using high level ide to create object/connection database. Run the resultant project on an interpreter to verify the functionality, allowing insertion of intermediate inspection points.
No one needs to know the internals of the low level or high level objects, except specialists who make them, or you who bind them together into a high level block object. Think of Visual Basic vs c++, using pre made objects or binding objects into an object block.

VAR == in programming language means “variable”, place holder for whatever you intend on utilizing for that abstract notion of metaphysical construct. an application of this would be VAR == stasis, or VAR = RFK JR. or the unlimited number of things that could be used in its place.

A fantastic teacher, a genius, best YT-video ever? Scanning through the first ~100 comments I wonder if mine will appear. The entaglement with AI-models is a topic on its own, ML-architectures actually lack some of the properties that define an algorithm, not only because they are error-prone and hallucinate (ok, on an algorithmic basis). Being a very experienced project manager I would actually like to see the discussion if ‘shiny algorithms’ (classic definition) exist at all in real-life applications. Of course, they don’t.

The video should have just gone to the basics. Algorithms are yes/no gates. They get more complex as they’re built on. It all started with 1’s and 0’s and not much has changed until now that we have non binary quantum computing.

None of this makes any sense to the reality of knowledge. Playing games with words does not make for a better world. I am so tired of people not addressing the problem. I have yet found anyone fixing anything, good advertising, bad technology. Algorithms are not the issue. These we have been making them for tens of thousands of years. New problems, new ways we find of solve them. What no one saw “2001: A Space Odyssey”.
I do not know of any algorithm that is over 20 lines of code. It takes 20 lines of code only because of our bad technology. The 20 lines of code we do produce are unreadable. Unreadable means that code cannot be validated. Might be valid means that there is an assumption. An assumption is not science.
As far as AI is concerned, we are not really making the machine learn anything. There are 12 inches in a Foot. Is Blue more liked than Red? Who cares. You say YES, I say No, In context people, Bob hates both colors. Sure I can have the computer count how many times RED and BLUE are used, then a human makes an assumption on the meaning of the numbers. The computer counts, the human interprets and gives recommendations “if you like blue you are stupid”. Is this mission critical? Cute! yes, useful is questionable.

I just realized the phone book example is how i was trained to find a fault on a underground electrical circuit. Split the circuit in half close the fuse if it goes bang you know what side of the circuit has a problem. Rinse and repeat until you find which section of line or witch transformer is bad.

How does a senior CS student know so little about algorithms and have no idea about the vocabulary? And then the NYU graduate student was talking about basic freshman level stuff. Has CS been really dumbed down since I was in college or is NYU just a really awful school? Heck, neural nets was in my high school junior class 20 years ago. My first CS class in college assumed I knew all that. At least the Columbia professor knew what he was talking about.

It depends.
There are one thousand people on the Earth that improved models/gradient search/loss function in a major way. Or developed a new architecture. Those are masters.
For millions of data scientists IA is a tool (blackbox) that you can adopt to your particular case. They write a simple wrapper (this requires algorithms), train a model, get satisfactory resulrs and move to a new project. Those are craftsmen. They act like a cook that don’t care about the genetics of onion that they fry. They only care that it is cooked well. And this is enough most of the times.
About good craftsmen. When model fails to learn, they first check the quality of data GIGO principle. If data is ok, they replace the model. If this fails, they search for a bug in their harness code. If this fails, they dive deep in the model and tweak it. At this point a model is considered an algorithm for the craftsmen.

Was ten years ago. People published their code and datasets. This was science.
Now they report “our new algorithm is the best [code, weights are not provided in the paper]. We’ve trained our AI on our dataset [dataset is not provided] and we got these results”.
If you hide your procedure – this is not scientific research.
For example, nuke project of the US was not a good science. They didnot publish their methods and results (for national security reasons). Soviets had to use intelligence agents to spread the knowledge (to China, for example), making it science.
Cardano did the same, when he published a solution for a qubic aquation that he got through “spying”. But this kick started science in Europe.

No way did that little girl have such a good explanation for algorithms. At that age, I would have probably only known how to spell it. If she doesn’t make it far, I’m screwed.

Algorithm is an Arabic word invented by Alkhawarizmi the great muslim scientist and the father of algebra. The meaning of this great Arabic word is the “way of solutions”. Also, Algebra is an Arabic word invented by the father of Math also Alkhawarizmi. Its meaning in Arabic is “changing the state of a thing or reform it”. Unfortunately, the credit is always been given to other scientists and even skipping the Era where this great scientist Alkhawarizmi was born. Alkhawarizmi invented our numbers and once called an Arabic numbers. we are using numbers based on angles and zero has no angles according to Alkhawarizmi. Also, he is the inventor of equations and polynomial equations.

If you master something, you’ll be able to explain even a complicated concept to others in simple language. If you can’t do it, it simply you don’t understand. The way he tried to explain the little girl is exciting. I’m a university lecturer who also like to teach children. It’s a good example how to be a great teacher. 👍🏼
