Car sharing sounds like a nightmare. Ask taxi or uber drivers how some people treat cars that aren’t theirs.

    • MrStredders

      September 24, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Except with autonomous EVs, you’ll just be a passenger, same as if you were in a taxi or Uber, not like driving a rental car.

What works in CHINA, will not work, EVERYWHERE else. Europe for example, has multiple different languages and sides of the road places are driven on. In the United States, no city has a public transportation system which competes with cars in terms of volume of passengers. Americans simply don’t like sharing. Sorry but good luck. I also think the whole Uber/Lyft thing, will be less attractive when you summon an AI drive vehicle with a dirty interior left by the 30th passenger that day. Nor do I think during a pandemic anybody really wants to indulge in personal transport like this anyway. So good luck with the whole automatic remote central AI driven vehicles. One day, but not in the next few years I doubt it.

There will be fewer cars but for different reasons he mentions. We simply move most of our work into the cloud and don’t have to drive to work anymore. We order more and more stuff online. We just don’t need cars that often anymore.

  13. bj0rn

    September 24, 2021 at 8:54 pm

A potential downside to this would be that traffic becomes yet another thing that is managed from above, rather than something that is available for pretty much anyone who holds a job. It could easily become a tool for a monopoly corporation or an authoritarian state to use against the interests of their citizens. So you are trying to protest? Nope, not gonna happen. Your car will not go to that meeting place you agreed on. You are journalist reporting on the wrong-doings of your government? Well, now your car is going to a special place where few journalists return from. We have to think about what can go wrong too, before we do away with our perhaps most important means to freedom of mobility.

Wow, IMF-directors, bankers, and now industrialists? Done with ted, they didn’t deliver on last years’ amazing promises.

    • M. Roman

      September 24, 2021 at 10:13 pm

No one promised, anything, academic. They share ideas.

    • Tjalle Haaze

      September 24, 2021 at 10:54 pm

@M. Roman I don’t care whether or not it’s academic. There’s plenty of people without great credentials that have ideas worth sharing, but if you say you want to change things don’t bring on people who are interested in keeping things the way they are. Old TED presented you with the optimal way of growing tiny forests, innovative attempts at restoring damaged ecosystems and better ways of building cities that relied on great designs rather than overly complicated smart systems that are autonomously driving us towards mining the deep sea. What’s a businessman doing on a stage that was reserved for creative thinkers? Why are we constantly being told that the powers that be are making a fist for the planet, instead of just fisding it? TED’s fallen prey to repressive tolerance. The boss has decided to ‘give in’ to the protestors. By joining them. And what self-respecting organization would send him away? Isn’t this what they wanted? Real influence? Sure, but their stage is now his.

This guy should come to the American West and see how vast the wide-open spaces are. Cars are necessary and the only means of transportation in places that are so expansive and wild. Not all of us live in giant metropolitan cities. Even then – cars are so much better than any form of public transportation.

The title of this video is good, everything else is not. The presenter for this video is a car-maker trying to sell us a techno-fix for a political problem. Electric cars are not the solution, autonomous vehicles are not the solution, ride-sharing is not the solution. We don’t just need less cars, we fundamentally just need fewer kilometers driven. Ride-sharing, EV’s, and autonomous vehicles are better than what we have, but they’re not better than nothing.

Cars generate pollution, kill people, and create massive parking lots. The above changes fix that. However, cars also kill small businesses, isolate communities from each-other, generate MASSIVE amounts of noise (even EV’s) to the point people flee the city to escape it, hinder the psychological development of children, bankrupt cities, contribute to the obesity epidemic, and raise house prices. This is completely ignoring not only the emissions that go into making the cars, but also the emissions that go into paving the roads for them.

We need to replace cars, not with different cars, but with literally anything else.

if the idea of, everyone using a pooled set of self driving cars to its logical conclusions, then yes alot of good stuff can happen. The problem will be people, there is so much in our lives, about passing out test, and owning our own cars, that some people are going to be very resistant. Meanwhile there will be some “old money” who objects to this future, and drag it out, so we may never seen the full benefits. Finally its all very well saying “there might be more green space”, but that is promise a self driving car designer can make. The downside is obviously jobs lost in haulage, or in taxi/uber type services.

There would also need to be a lot of trust from the customers into the system controlling the cars, even more trust if people monitor those systems. I’d be afraid that something like this could be hacked into

    • MetallicReg

      September 28, 2021 at 6:50 am

You need much less trust than in a human driver. Those are even more dangerous today, when these systems are still in beta.

    • Pandaboi

      September 26, 2021 at 11:44 am

Elon Musk does not deserve any praise. Putting aside that EV’s aren’t a solution the problem, and may infact just make things worse, Elon Musk is not responsible for the change. The demand was there, he just got there first and stole the wealthy early adopters.

The conversation around cars is framed in entirely the wrong way. In order to solve the problems caused by the need for cars like emissions, congestion, noise, huge lots for parking and large roads and highways, we have to shift our focus away from cars completely and build a robust public transit system.

    • Tina Rmn

      October 1, 2021 at 10:14 pm

I think there will always be people who want their own private véhicule… but I agree that the transit systems need to be more fluid and accessible from anywhere.

I don’t think as automation of car approach, there will be less vehicle on pur traffic. It should be perfect to link it with the smart phones that we are holding right now. Though it does bring us a lot of conveniences, reduce lot of efforts in handling daunting tasks, I don’t see anyone putting their phone off their hands.

Oh, don’t worry Freeman. Your dream is coming true just not the way you think. You wanna save the planet? Fine. Here’s a cheaper method. How about the global economy falls apart due to incompetent global leaders and no one car afford to buy a home or a car and everyone rents and wears old clothes and carries 5-year-old smartphones on average. Everything is delivered and for most, it is a village lifestyle for them as they can’t afford to travel in any way shape or form and everyone works from home for Chinese peanut level pay. People can’t afford to buy enough food, drugs, or alcohol to be fat so they become healthy poor people by current standards and when the poor get sick they just die because health insurance becomes a delicacy for the rich. Do you want fewer cars? You’re about to have less of everything. You don’t like my description? Me neither. Try teaching the poor how to own businesses while working from home so they can cut costs, increase profit and choose not to own cars while affording a home because the AI self-driving electric cars are too expensive but also still cheaper than owning a car once gas-powered cars are made illegal because of the governments desire to control all transportation movement which is what self-driving cars are all about.

I contacted Annabelle Ryan in May after seeing much praises showered upon her by my co-workers and within this space of four months she has grown my $160k to $460,000. Honestly she’s a wonderful broker

I have come across several positive feedbacks about Mrs Annabelle Ryan, although I ignored at first I mean there are several scams promising what they can’t do on the Internet these days but right now I’m completely overwhelmed by this I’ll definitely give her a try.
