Body gestures do not always indicate a lack of believing what they say. It is usually for me, I suddenly have to much pressure in that area, or there is suddenly a sharp pain, or my back hurts, or there is to much pressure in my brain. It often times is completely out of context and unrelated.

So, this guy asserts that interlacing your fingers is a sign of insecurity and then proceeds to do so when he speaks of the credibility of his own supposed area of expertise (doing so, for example, when he asserts “we know that because we’ve done research” and “we used to say”). Seriously, look at his hands as he communicates… and then try not to conclude that this is all a bunch of pseudoscientific claptrap!

I’d love for Joe to talk to my Career counselors in College because each one has told me not to put my hands in the frame of a zoom call when interviewing for positions since it’s distracting, but if so much of our communication is non-verbal I feel like part of me is lost in that process. Would be interested to hear his take on it. I mean, obviously communicating non-verbally on a job interview =/= communicating to millions, but I’d still be interested to hear his opinions on the matter.

Weak without particular examples of spoken content context. Rarely remember what is said? Do you read the media the day after debates? Biden’s fracking blunder has been all over the media landscape for days. When my eye itches, I lightly touch my eye because I wear contact lenses and am careful not to dislodge it. In debates, there are bright lights in their face. When Navarro said “we know that”, he interlaced his hands — did that mean he was struggling or having difficulty with something related to what he was going to say? I doubt it. I do believe there is validity to these generalities in particular instances, especially in police interrogation, but without specific examples, this was dull.

I cross my arms very often. Not as a non verbal way of showing discomfort, feeling awkward or defensive. I’ve found it helps me concentrate on the matter being discussed. I’ll sit back or sit straight up. I’m paying close attention to what is being said. In law school there is an entire class dedicated to non verbal body movements. The hand steeple, facial expressions, gestures. I only did what they said to do so I could pass. I’ve always done the hand steeple, even placing my index fingers on my chin or mouth. My facial expressions are somewhat void, I grew up playing poker. I never once lost a case in court nor failed to get a suspect to speak in my career. Perhaps it’s because I’m a female or I just showed little emotion to what was being said. I watch for shoulder tension very closely. Once those shoulders start to rise and get to the ear level, I know I’ve hit a nerve. Inappropriate smiling, head movements, smirking are large indicators of one being very uncomfortable and lying.

This whole “science” of non verbal queues seems like bull. Some things are queues but assigning all this meaning to everything about someone’s posture is ridiculous. As a reminder, these nonverbals are only in English. We really don’t understand much about language and soooo much of this can be taken with a grain of salt, because once someone knows these happen, they can fairly easily code shift and use different nonverbal language if they are trying to be seen as honest.

Interesting selection of who’s doing them.
A viewer will unconsciously assign the interpreted meaning of the action to the person doing it.
The order, sequence, number of repetitions, and ratios all can deliver an intended impression, IF there is an unspoken agenda to influence running in the background, or an unconscious, pre-existing bias. It can also be unintentionally done by someone who doesn’t know about it, and we’ve all had that experience…
So…a fascinating example of the art of being understood in the way you intend.
I do believe that it is of great value for people to be educated in these matters and to be able to “see” politicians accurately.

I’m not complaining, I wish I’d had a class in non verbal communication back in school or college. The big question I have is how do you know if a non verbal is intentional deception or unintentional behaviors? How do you recognize if someone has been trained to manipulate with nonverbal cues?

Navarro fails to bring up the most important aspect that governs body language which is the treatment you received as a child. If a person is confident in him or herself they will exhibit certain body language. If he has an inherit guilt complex he will exhibit a different body language. That’s just 2 examples. If the person evaluating body language doesn’t have a knowledge of the individuals personal background he can very quickly make decisions that are totally wrong which happens a lot. The professionals often make mistakes and to decide on an individuals honesty or lack of by certain body language most times is idiotic. Body language is not a written in stone tool guarantee. It is a tool often used to obtain an idea about someone and should be remembered as being nothing more.
FBI or not it is very dishonest for these people to make these statements about body language when there is so much more to it. A certain gesture that is being exhibited sometimes may mean the exact opposite of what is the norm.

I don’t look at body language exactly. Look at the person yes, hear what they are saying, yes. but nothing else matters. Too much body language shows you have no self control, doing things unnecessarily. I didn’t even notice this man’s bookshelf or the way he is sitting until someone mentioned them in the comments. Why must you notice things like that? None of it matters. This is why EVERYTHING is centered on subliminal messaging, ads and persuading you to do something, because you focus on the unimportant things instead of looking at the facts. One important thing is that non verbal communication is a lot dependent on cultural aspects. One example for a book called something like “Gestures for a Globalized World” is what happened to Edward Deming in his first class of statistical analysis of product quality in Japan: Deming taught in school sports courts and in his first class he had a hard time because the Japanese would lean back and slightly close their eyes – in the west, a posture that communicates lack of interest. Later he found out that, in Japan, that gesture means strong interest and focus. So, not all gestures have universal meaning.

I asked a person who’s a die-hard fan of #45, who was screaming that “If only the LEGAL votes were counted, Biden would lose!” which votes were illegally done. And she said “All the ones that were FOR Biden. There was not a single legal vote in that entire bunch!” I told her that I am a legally registered voter in the state of Wisconsin, born and raised here in the USA, and that I voted for Biden. And she snarled “Then you were voting illegally!”
Apparently, #45, and his rabid followers, are now trying to spread the rhetoric that ALL the votes that were for Biden, no matter WHO it was that voted for the man, are illegal and must be “immediately thrown out”. That, apparently, voting for Biden, itself, is an act of treason. LOL I swear, these people have LOST it!

I am a former Criminal Investigator, and I have used your book “What Every BODY is Saying” and the Dictionary. as a guideline for interviewing suspects or potential employees.. I have also found your videos very helpful. I totally agree with you about gestures betraying what’s in a persons mind, but what’s in the heart, not so much. People who have suffered emotionally, or fell victim to adverse psychological trauma may be on edge and have many issues and worries on their mind that weigh on them while communicating. Otherwise, I agree with you and find your techniques quite helpful.

I agree that much of politics is theatre, and body language (non-verbal communication) reveals important information. A trained speaker capitalizes on imagery, and can orchestrate an impression which is devious and manipulative. Interesting topic for sure, but not absolutely scientific. Choice of words and use of clever rhetoric and euphemisms can also mask true intentions. Interesting video.

Some gestures may be universal, but most are a reflection of someone’s unique cultural background, and don’t translate accros the race and ethnicity spectrum. It would be a mistake to apply a flawed understanding of the gestures broadly, just as is a mistake to base a conviction solely on a witness statement when the witness and the suspect are of different race and total strangers to each other. The body language reading is not a science, and produces false positives. For all practical purposes it’s a magic show theater gimmick, marred by cognitive biases of “experts” that use it to intimidate suspects in the absence of evidence. When applied to criminal investigations, or any judgment of intent and character, it falls in the same category of failed investigative methods as physiognomy, a debunked “science” of “detecting” someone’s criminal nature based on measures of their skull, facial features, etc.

I must say, 3-4 videos now, and I noticed that he has love for short chairs. Spreading legs, folding knees; one might struggle in this position, but he doesn’t (probably). With that in mind, I’d say he sat in many, many short chairs in his life. Probably those small interrogation stools they use behind the scenes or he is used to crouching. Yes, I might be wrong. Haven’t met enough people yet.
