    Dear Cnet,

just admit magsaf charging on the iphone 12 was dumb and only done to sell accessories. Apple ALREADY admitted that the magsafe charge WILL damage cases long term.

When has a company layed out so many negatives on a product release?

Which is great. USB-C has a terrible wiggling issue. I have both an iPhone and Google Pixel Phone due to my work and I hate the wiggle in USB-C, especially on mobile phones.

I’m an Apple sheep and even I can say that they are a bunch of hypocrites. We don’t need four categories of iPad with 5 (7?) different size ranges, we don’t need two different 13in laptops (with a 12.9in tablet+keyboard that is totally not a 2-in-1 laptop in disguise), we don’t need 5 new phones in one year with two older models apparently still in production and we don’t need three different smart watches with 3 different material finishes with or without older processors and/or form factors still in production. Apple honestly needs to massively streamline their product offering, offer better serviceability on their devices, Airpods batteries are literally imposible to repair even if the drivers and chips are still perfectly useable. Everyone coming from a non-11 Pro has to buy new bricks for the in-box cable or magsafe and that would imply that you are replacing a phone with a massively over designed SoC with 6 years of software support after just one year? Otherwise you are looking at using your puny 5W charger in 2020 for your $829 phone.
I personally suffer from severe upgrade anxiety because we keep getting new products that just make older ones obsolete, some not even a year in between, with some features apparently designed with futureproofing in mind but others not at all? Why didn’t the 2020 iPad Pro or the iPad Air get U1 chips inside if the master plan with LiDAR, AirTags and possibly Apple Glasses next year or so will probably require having all those pieces to the puzzle? What’s the point of pushing 5G with Qualcomm modems so hard when they are evidently pushing their own modem manufacture for future products, especially when theirs will probably be much more energy efficient or built in with positioning chips or whatnot. Why release a 2020 iPad Pro that is virtually identical to the 2018 one just to outspec it 6 months later by a product $200 cheaper and why release literally ANY mac when they know they’ll make intel compatibility obsolete in three years??

It’s all truly frustrating to say the least…

  23. RealityCheck18

    October 26, 2020 at 1:19 am

Apple apple.. why not switch to usb type c and include a lightning to type c adapter in the box. Users can continue using their current lightning cable to charge their device, and later when the cable breaks (which it will in less than an year), they can get a type c cable.. no massive e waste generated and enables 1 cable in future again reducing e waste…

  24. Massappeal

    October 26, 2020 at 1:24 am

I mean even a wireless chargers have to plug into something nothing is ever going to be wireless when they come out with this wireless phone your going to need a wireless charger for your car and home ????

  25. Sunbum Kim

    October 26, 2020 at 1:25 am

A magsafe charger is more wasteful than a lightning cable. Just because you rest the phone on it instead of plugging it in, doesn’t really change much.

its too early for that especially for iphone, imagine if u want to transfer data on PC will mag safe do that? if u say u can transfer via wifi to your pc then its a big problem as not all pcs have wifi especially desktop, apple just making people buy 2more accessories i don’t think its about environment rather its about how to make money, also mag safe need to be 3x fast to charge. i agree with your review about this but happening at least for now .its too early

The lightning port is better and more durable for a mobile device! Why ditch a perfectly refined and implemented product. Anywhere you go you will find a lightning charging cable, I would argue lightning is more widespread than USB-C. Really hope Apple sticks with it on phones forever

Isn’t wireless super inefficient [compared to direct charging] which will increase electricity consumption which is terrible for the environment?

  59. purspike

    October 27, 2020 at 4:26 pm

I can see a future where the magsafe charging points are installed in daily items or furniture, in a non-ugly way. This way, Apple can license the magsafe charging tech to any lifestyle product that wants to keep Apple consumers happy. Apple will earn way more in this way and bypass the USB-C requirement.

  60. PeterR126

    October 27, 2020 at 4:44 pm

The iPhone is a status symbol. It means you can afford it. People will buy it just for that.

I love the all-wireless world Idea, qi is just a better alternative than ugly cheap cable and worse DONGLES. My only concern is the ability of qi to reliably transmit data. But that said Wifi-6 and 5G are becoming better alternatives than OPTICAL FIBER so, we may not need to develop better cables for small appliances devices in the future. Also, USB-C is nice for screens and heavy data stuff, but honestly, it sucks so much it is less durable than the classic USB port 😐 ? like can it wear even faster LOL
