Flock Safety sits at the intersection of an increasingly intense debate around the spread of surviellance technology, AI, and who’s using all of that information and to what ends. Founder and CEO Garrett Langley spoke at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 to defend his stance that Flock is a net positive in the face of concerns about its work monitoring communities, cities, and enabling data sharing across law enforcement agencies.

As a sign of that backlash, as Langley spoke on stage, a protest against Flock was taking place outside of Moscone West in San Francisco.

Companies absolutely have a responsibility to protect people from the abuse of their products by users. Period!!!

A simple solution is to require that every time a user looks up any data, they must document the reason for the search. This must be mandatory, and everything must be recorded within Flock!!

If Flock does not enforce protections against abuse, then it must be discarded ASAP and must never be allowed anywhere near any government agency. Period.

The amount of crimes being committed at the highest office of USA and you expect local police to behave is moronic and you must expect a politician to easily become a dictator with the help of mass surveillance like flock etc…

No matter what his points are on crime, nobody elected him to office, and he’s not a police chief either. He admits himself that he’s not qualified to solve crime – yeah we know.

He says “I can only speak on behalf of the thousands of police chiefs around the country”, the whole point is no he can’t. Isn’t he from the United States? He should know how it works here.

If and when the government decides to implement this level of surveillance policing, it would go through the normal civic process, we don’t have over the police department to a Y Combinator company. Speaking of which, YC has also invested in background check companies – but in such cases they did not open up the background data of citizens to any customer who ran the check the way Flock is doing with their data. YC has experience in these kinds of companies, they should direct Garrett on the next appropriate steps: Layoff and shut down. Add to that 90%+ failure rate out of YC.

Hey at least this one has a product, the first Psychopathy-as-a-Service with a REST API and everything!

TechCrunch’s Equity podcast team took over the Builders Stage Tuesday morning to tackle a growing challenge for the AI industry: What happens when AI agents go off-script, and who’s responsible for keeping them in check?
