‘Feel’ The Metaverse With This Tech Coming in 2023
It’s the beginning of 2023, and while we’re still trying to figure out how we can incorporate the metaverse into our daily lives, there’s loads of tech to explore. Here’s a roundup of the newest (and coolest) metaverse, virtual reality and augmented reality software and hardware we saw at CES. Subscribe to CNET: Never miss…

Feeling like progress is impossible? You’re not alone — here’s how to keep pushing forward #TEDTalks
Malala Yousafzai has spent her life advocating for girls’ education — surviving an assassination attempt at 15, meeting with world leaders and then watching hard-won progress collapse when Afghanistan fell to the Taliban in 2021. That moment of despair forced her to completely rethink what it means to create change, and what she discovered replaced…

Let’s launch our garbage into the sun!
Ummm, no. Earth is messy. So can’t we just send our junk somewhere else? Aside from the moral quandaries raised by such poor stewardship of our already disheveled solar system, Earthlings probably haven’t made a habit of beaming literal garbage into space yet because we simply can’t afford to. I think cellphone based vr would be the best path forward. The problem with the gear vr and day dream was first that it was 3dof 2nd the inability to still use your phone while in vr, but if vr was thought about at the system level…maybe a foldable phone for wider fov in vr, and good software could do the trick

It was called the metaverse before Facebook changed their name. They just want to confuse you and make you think they invented the entire metaverse.

I wish people would stop equating VR with the Metaverse. The Metaverse is a dead-end isolated tourist-trap cul-de-sac off the VR Interstate that anyone who spends a lot of time driving on avoids. The true innovation in VR comes in isolated individual experiences, not in socially-connected virtual congregation. The Metaverse is a failed pipe dream that merely touts a service no one asked for. VR is more about simulation and gaming, not about meeting people or the virtual career brainstorming sessions Zuck thinks are the future of corporate innovative growth. Those of us already finding a comfortable niche within the VR community cringe at the Metaverse and hope for its hasty demise.

My interpretation is that the metaverse is just a catch-all term for the evolution of non-gaming VR. It makes sense that Facebook wanted to pioneer it, because I think it will have more in common with social media than much else out there right now. It seems silly now because everyone is recording their funny videos and youtube videos and everything with 2d cameras. But what if movies, and funny Tiktok videos, and your family videos, and lots of other stuff was all created as 3D spatial content… then the metaverse starts to make a lot more sense. Once people have VR headsets for fun, they’ll use them for work too. Zoom wouldn’t have caught on if no one had phones and laptops yet. No one would buy them FOR zoom. I think VR will go the same way.

I really love Scott’s coverage of VR and the metaverse, so I was looking forward to a video like this coming out after CES, and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately I didn’t see much that really resonated with me.
We’re seeing a lot of exploration of different headsets, but what we’re missing is consumer-level real-time volumetric video capture technology. I want to record VR video content in real time, and I think that’s going to be key to the metaverse ACTUALLY taking off with the public. Let me put up 3-5 cameras around a room and record a family gathering.

Same here — really terrific work on his part to educate the masses and amplify the innovations happening in the space, from a hardware perspective.

Pimax Crystal and Portal are awesome! Great products!

Surely you are joking! Both are great in theory, but I follow more than a dozen tech influencers that had hands on time with the PORTAL and all said it was a POS.

@Stephan Jeffery apparently Scott sees it differently, and there is a good reason CNET has him covering the VR/AR industry (although I found it amusing that he had never heard of Pimax LOL). And BTW, except for some die-hard hi-performance PCVR fundamentalist influencers who were just hoping to see Pimax kill its Portal project to focus on getting PCVR product line(namely the Crystal and 12K) ready sooner, most VR influencers actually like the concept behind the Portal, which is not surprising because it obviously makes perfect sense, they just don’t think its VR functions are fully ready, yet, and I don’t see any fundamental barrier there because the underlying tech components are fully mature and Pimax has been well known for their capability of developing cutting-edge VR products. So all pieces of the puzzle are already there and based on the pace they are making progress now, it seems just a matter of a month or two waiting time before its hardware gets ready. Cannot wait for Scott’s review on the Portal then.
