Um, as a child I grew up in a very wealthy area, public schools were still just as trash and did not give good education. Maybe the buildings looked a bit nicer, but terrible education system

The chinese study method she mentioned is probably only as effective as any other method because the chinese like many other asians spend most of their childhood lives studying, unlike in the west. That gets you good grades and academic knowledge, sure, but probably not the best mental health.

I love the idea of a mistakes notebook. For many years I been taking notes when things went OK and also not OK on my daily job; and for the not OK cases I keep analyzing and updating my notes as I discover more details. Interesting that this is a learning method on the other side of the world.

I had recess up until the 5th grade, but gym class only twice a week. Once I entered the 6th grade, no more recess, but we had gym class daily. So at least I was able to burn off some excess energy and wake up in the middle of the day. Except for that year I had gym class in the first period. That was so obnoxious. I would spend the rest of the day sweaty. (no, I couldn’t shower—they didn’t give us enough time.)

Teachers in the US are treated like volunteers and viewed by a lot of people as failures because they chose to teach. They are often paid barley above minimum wage and are forced to take side jobs to make ends meet and pay to supply their classrooms. Teachers in other countries are highly respected and paid very well.
Also the US is pushing academics too much and too fast. Kids need to play and move and do hands on activities. Middle and high school kids need hands on electives where they can learn practical skills or just fun hands on stuff. We need to bring back cooking and sewing classes, wood and metal shop, art and theater classes and stuff where kids can apply academics practically.
Also no more homework until mid and high school and only for big projects. Kids need time to spend with friends and family, do sports or clubs or just relax.
My 7 year old does school online because she is has AuDHD and a few other things and a regular school just couldn’t accommodate her.

16:55 as teacher in the United States, I think the biggest issue that most of us face is student behavior and the lack of parental support. It used to be that you could talk to the parents about the students behavior and the parent would take care of it but now it is often the parent not even believing that there is a problem. It has been growing steadily worse since I started teaching about 20 years ago.

the school systems excuse for eliminating recess which is “we need to maximize time for learning” meanwhile students in the US are always made to go to school at like 5 am in the morning and they don’t get off school until like 3 pm or 4 pm in the afternoon, which is how these types of excuses is what makes US school systems so out of touch with reality, if i ever wanted to have kids, i’d rather just homeschool them because i don’t trust the US school system at all, especially as a school bullying victim myself, if i ever put my kids in schools, what if they get bullied or harassed? what if they have a hard time making friends due to snobby spoiled school cliques? just no, also, i was born in 1996, so when i was school, thank god they never eliminated recess back then

The use of AI is the bane of actual learning. It just gives them the answers (sometimes even correct answers) and interferes with critical thinking, learning how to find and sift through information and just plain think things through. Re: snow days . . . You are correct – in theory . . . Let’s be honest, its 2026 and kids won’t be going outside or whatever. They will just hunker down with their darn screens. If they are gonna be watching screens all day, may as well be learning something rather than rotting their brains with tic toc or whoever. They can have fun after school.

10:34 In my country or atleast in my schools, the mobile phones or any smart watches were banned so til 10th grade I had no phone and in 11th and 12th (we call it college) I had a dummy phone the 3310. For all the studies related thing we used to have it in hard form and I was in that era in 2018 to 2022. I got my full smart phone in my university but I only use it to chat or make plans.

, I think the way “self-testing” is described in the video is a very beautified version of it.
We don’t really need to find a way to do “self-testing”
There are so many test papers that it’s impossible to assign enough time to use them as an actual test during school time, so a lot of them become homework or self-practice material, so naturally there are never-ending tests
You finish a section -> find the matching test paper, write it -> review it -> you finish a Chapter -> find the matching test paper -> test it -> each subject gets tested every 2 weeks or more in school time -> get 3 midterm/final exams per semester

Yes, so true. This is true even for asian unis. We get tested every two weeks, and all of those grades count toward your final grade, so we HAVE to take them seriously. I have to study for 7 final papers each semester, with each paper getting tested twice a month.

But it definitely won’t if we don’t even allow ourselves to dream about it 🙂 I’m a big believer that you have to stay firmly rooted in reality and at the same time you can strive for something better, always. Even if you only manage to get 1 tiny step closer. Someone else might pick up the baton 😁

very narrow-minded expert. We need “responsible products to be on the market”? Sure, if you live in a fairy tale… That’s just not going to happen. And yes, you DO need to teach the children to use AI effectively.
It’s like getting surprised in the 90s that kids used calculators for their math homeworks… That’s not something you can control. You can control your in-person exam environment. You can teach them how to use the tools of this age. And maybe you should rethink what skills and capabilities matter in today’s age.

I missed a comment here about introverts. As much as a introvert you are, we are a social species. We NEED to talk, interact, fight, play, etc, with other humans. Specially to live in society, we need our kids to be interacting since always. The countries with most friendly people are the ones where kids are forced to be social all the time. This is a very, very important part of human development.

I believe a major contributor to education issues in this country is the lack of believing we have a civic duty on almost everyone’s part. Too much “I got mine, you go get yours” and not enough “we are all in this together, the more we contribute the better off we all are”. Parents are not raising their kids with a sense that they need to contribute to society as a whole. Too many people see school as something that raises taxes, not as something that improves the quality of life for everyone. I would add many parents also have serious social media issues, while also defaulting to AI for any questions, its not just the kids.

Old guy here: Snow days are great but it seems that there’s way too many snow days in the past 30 years. I always went to school as a kid. I walked so there was never anything about not getting to school. Blizzard never stopped us (but it did slow us down a bit). Even for those who took the bus, there was not a snow day a year…It was more like a snow day every two or three years. I remember that I took the bus for a year and there was this horrendous ice storm. The bus still kept going. We slipped and slid into the school parking lot and still went to school. Nowadays, if I am to believe the parents that I talk to, there’s like one to three snow days a month during the winter.

People rather want their kids to be safe than to enforce a useless metric (no missing school days) on to them
Sure, you could probably still make it to school, but as you said yourself, you would be slipping all day, which has a very high statistical chance that many kids would get hurt during that time, all of which could have been easily avoidable by simply not forcing school on kids those days

In high school, we never had recess (in the 80s) and still don’t where I live but we do have lunch time and a few minutes between classes as well as study period for the older kids. Recess is for elementary school, not high school. My problem with recess is that we were forced to play outside in -20C weather. It’s just too dam cold and caused me to get sick. Recess is great inside in the winter.

I think the best tidbit is what she said about needing art education. That applies to everyone, everywhere, not just poor countries. Art is the most foundational formalized education. Artistic expression is the most intrinsic thing that makes humans human. You can’t neglect that. I feel like it was the best part of my education. You can’t build academic learning as well without a solid arts foundation. By no means should people get more degrees in the arts instead of more “practical” degrees, but the most successful people in a variety of fields have a solid arts background and incorporate arts into their daily life. Correlation is by no means causation (I’m a sciences person, btw), so it doesn’t necessarily mean that the arts improve performance in other fields, but I believe that they do.

Substitute Teacher in America here – I subbed at an elementary school today, and my fourth graders only had 10 minutes allotted to recess. I felt so bad for them. They were bouncing off the walls in math class afterward. They NEED more recess.

There is literally an episode of the cartoon Reces, where they eliminate Reces and they see that the school marks go down. When they reintroduce the concept of Reces it is hilarious that the White House say it is such a needed concept when the adults where the once who got rid of it! Rewarded for trying is important. When I was in grade 9, we had a grammar test every week and those marks were incorporated into our final grade for the class. The teacher said that if we got above 85% on the pre-test, we could do creative writing during the time grammar was being taught. The first time, I got 95% on the grammar test and 65% on the creative writing. Makes sense since I’d never done much creative writing. I was excited to build this skill throughout the semester. Then the teacher informed us that our marks on the creative writing would be incorporated into our final grades instead of our marks on the grammar test. I complained that it was unfair since we had good grades in grammar and she wasn’t doing much to teach us creative writing. She disagreed. Marks were important to me, so I spent the rest of the year failing the grammar pre-test, sitting completely bored out of my mind during the lessons, and then acing the post-lesson test. I wasn’t alone in doing this. What a way to completely demotivate students.

3:18 most people are happy for schools to have snow days and that’s the thing I don’t get about the recent backlash over school closures in the massive heatwave we had in the uk at the start of the summer. It’s the same thing. The weather meant it wasn’t safe to go to school, so schools shut. But because it was heat and not snow, that was apparently unreasonable.

The purpose of school in North America is to develop labourers ready for exploitation. Most of them will have menial jobs, and little hope. A few will have the opportunity, inclination and aptitude to aspire to and achieve better pay in skilled fields. Producing healthy, well-rounded individuals is would be in opposition to this objective as dysfunctional people with little hope are less likely to demand change because they do not believe it is possible. The system is working very well.

We need to make assessments that get rid of the AI component. Like teachers should just sit one on one with a student and ask questions. Show me how to do this. What does this mean? Then grades should be based on those answers.

How do Chinese students study???
Not sure about undergrads, but the grad students I’ve known (only about 50 of them) cheat.
They cheat as much as possible, it’s as if finding a new cheat is more important than spending the same amount of time studying! Perhaps they sell cheats and make some money?
I don’t know, what I do know is that Chinese grad students I’ve known would rather spend 10 hours looking for new ways to cheat than 2 hours studying.
Now Germans on the other hand, if they’re not studying, they’re dead. Those people, they’re the masters of studying and good grades/full understanding. That’s why so many have advanced degrees!
My experience was back in Grad school for my MS in Physics.

Global systems mean nothing if your own household is drowning in constant power struggles every day 😳 tried every connection script the experts recommended but bedtimes still took 2 exhausting hours of debating, i was totally burnt out. I found all the answers and right guidance in the book called Why Good Parenting Fails (Nora Bryant), it exposed why modern methods backfire! now my son is so relaxed and happy, worth it) everyone should check this out

I’m in the uk and we didn’t have recess but we have play time or brake wich I think is the same thing. In primary school (kindergarten and elementary school, 4-11) we had about 20mins of playtime about 11ish and lunch was about 1hr.
In secondary school (middle school & high school, 11-16/18) we have brake for 25mins at 11:00 and lunch that is 45mins at 1pm 🙂

My US high school had 51 minutes for lunch and we spent some of that eating and some talking or walking around the track or playing football outside or studying – it’s some form of recess, anyway!
