      Apple car play is overrated

You can knock carplay (or android auto), but it’ll always be better than what these auto mfg’s can make (given overall budgets and number of more experienced devs). Also it’s more secure since your data isn’t stored on the car as well.

My car choice also depends on CarPlay or android auto too

    • @EUC-lid

      June 6, 2024 at 5:39 pm

If the promised compatibility with CarPlay and vehicle state of charge data goes through, they could implement it and still keep the charging data & navigation working together. Currently their system is better for getting around than anything CarPlay offers. The only downside is relying on BlueTooth for audio.

Rivian owns and incorporates A Better Route Planner into their built-in-Navigation, and it’s not a goofy laggy system like most sub-$60,000 cars. Rivian owners aren’t complaining about missing CarPlay, so why insist it’s the biggest factor?

Not at all. $5.8B in the bank at the end of Q1. Don’t believe all the nonsense articles about them losing $XX,xxx per vehicle. They’re building new factories and developing the R2 & R3 as world vehicles. They aren’t spending more than MSRP to build R1s.

Amazon went 9 years before having a “profitable” one. Tesla went 17 years. This is how modern companies surpass old ones.

When I question why cars cost $50k now, this really helps explain some of that. Absolutely mental! I love this new Beta Test with Lexy series!

    • @cgamiga

      June 6, 2024 at 7:45 pm

The unified electronics and reduced parts in EVs can actually drive cost down, not up. Most of the additional features & “luxury” complexity, can be done in software… ‘free’. EVs cost more now due to batteries, and initial start of manufacturing w/o economies of scale and mature paid-off R&D & supply chains, unlike mature ICE vehicles. Most makers start “high-end” so high prices can help pay off initial investments, then move down value chain as costs go down, just like Tesla did, and now Rivian is… they are just starting.
Current Tesla Model3 is $39k, not 50k, even without $7.5k tax break… and has nearly all the tech features of higher trims, just smaller battery/range (still, the biggest cost driver.)
GM , VW and others say are coming out w/ $25-35k cars, and just wait for the more mature Chinese industry cars to come… !
still very advanced features and electronics… just simpler to make.

  19. @hitf5

    June 6, 2024 at 4:59 pm

Lexy – once you go EV it is very hard to go back to ICE unless you are spending more than $150k

  20. @inspecter86

    June 6, 2024 at 5:01 pm

it’s safe to say a lot of the software will be on the R2 which is cool.
