@Joe quiet the irony when apple brainwashed you the moment you enter its ecosystem…
You also agree with them killing the iphone battery after 2 years right?

    • Joe

      September 11, 2021 at 1:12 am

@Kartikey Sharma Brainwashed? Yea not to the extent of only using Apple products and crap on Apple’s competitors. I could leave tomorrow If I wanted to.
Also, that iPhone battery thing isn’t no longer a thing. Bringing that up is akin to the Note 7 situation.

That’s the point. If Epic is allowed to, it might have.

Developers and consumers WON, not these mega-corporations. Apple’s refusal to let its users know of alternate methods to make in-app purchases was absurd. And not just bad for developers, but a bad user experience but Epic Games pretending to be a sudden champion for developers consumers is comical at it’s best. Their case was flawed from the jump. Sweeney talking about fighting for developers and consumers against monopolistic practices while taking investments from Tencent and the CCP.

Dude, what are you talking about here? get out of your little apple bubble. The way apple it’s running iOS is worse than what Microsoft did back in the 90s, and Microsoft got sued by the department of Justice. If you want to keep paying your 30% apple tax, it’s on you.

Well I agree with the Court’s decision I mean I’m not a lawyer but both parties were at fault not offering another payment method and epic sweet move of putting a secondary payment method which kind of broke their contract in the first place but but that’s a good thing the court now found but I’m on Android currently a pixel 4 XL looking upgrade to the new pixel 6 loving it and will not come back to Apple

    Epic Got a Victory. KO

You Win I believe we will see Epic Game and are store like Walmart sooner or later.

Epic wanted its own App Store inside the App Store without paying a dime. They were only mad they could not get to APPLE’S entire base. They would have signed exclusive deals, charged 30% AND sold your personal data. Most people saw this so Epic put it’s most persuasive argument of payment options in the forefront. No way was an Epic win ever great for Apple consumers. So glad about this outcome. Customers are now free to use outside payment options.

I wonder if this will start affecting iPhone sales if Epic stays off of Apple app store. Fortnite players might opt out of upgrading to a new iPhone if they can’t play one of their favourite game on it. It will likely be a small amount of players at first, but if Epic games stay popular and those people start buying Android devices to keep playing on the latest device then Apple might start losing its cool factor among phone gamers. If enough of these people are influencers, it could have a trickle down effect and create a more general move to Android.

    • Fill Freakin

      September 11, 2021 at 10:27 pm

@SH DMD No, Apple wouldn’t have noticed yet. It was too new a fight last year to affect many sales. Apple’s Fortnite gamers will only think about it when they are ready to upgrade to a new phone. So it would take a couple of years before it starts affecting those gamers’ purchasing decision.
Don’t forget that a big part of what made iOS more successful than Android in the early smartphone days was the availability of more apps in the Apple store, specially big name apps. Fortnite, and Epic Games, are pretty big names. Even so, it will be pretty hard for this spat to create enough of an effect for Apple to start noticing it in their sales. It would likely take a few other key players to do the same, like Spotify and Netflix. But they are unlikely to have the deep pockets or taste for such a fight.

    • SH DMD

      September 11, 2021 at 10:32 pm

@Fill Freakin lol if they want to walk around school with Android when all their classmates have iPhone because of Fortnite, let them

    • Fill Freakin

      September 11, 2021 at 11:40 pm

@SH DMD You just have to look at how Photoshop and dorky digital creatives that used it on iMacs became outsized influencers and saved a floundering Apple from extinction in the 90’s. Even a small number of people can become tipping points. Gamers might just be this generation of youths’ biggest influencers.

Attorney who follows tech like crazy here: The ruling was good for Epic but “I can’t switch to Android for mobile gaming judge because I’m locked into the ecosystem! My air tags don’t work with android and android is spyware anyway” so I would’ve defined the market much much more for epic. Ecosystem lock in is huge and allows Apple to coast and slack. I would’ve probably found them an illegal monopolist. There’s many good pieces of evidence of their lack of effort due to no incentive to try. I love Apple products but they fall behind the curve of innovation, despite… lemme check…. Hmm all the resources of a $2.5 trillion market cap

    September 11, 2021 at 11:35 pm

Why? Why should Epic have any say in how Apple runs its Apple Store? Pay to occupy space and delivery from the Apple Store. Simple. Don’t like it, don’t cry … move along under your own power, not by hijacking the Apple Store for a free ride. Apple shouldn’t have to carry water for Epic. Let Epic open and maintain it’s own store, advertise on social media, on the ‘Net, in the Press, wherever, and have nothing to do with Apple. Who cares? Big elephant in the room… When developers write code that runs on Apple devices, don’t they owe some debt of gratitude to Apple’s development and engineering department? Is the Apple platform to be just taken for granted, as though it doesn’t cost Apple anything to maintain and improve it? Software developers get to use the different layers of code that Apple engineers to run on its devices. It’s a symbiotic relationship, and Epic sounds like they just want to show up for a free meal at Apple’s expense, then go off to their own hosted suite to collect from their clients who run Epic software. There’s an entry fee, Epic. Pay it or don’t enter. You don’t get to crash in, pig out, then leave to collect fees for your wares out in the parking lot.

I don’t think you’re quite reading this correctly. The court ruled that Apple is still owed its commission, which is 30% as per The contract between developers and Apple. The courts are very reluctant to step in on business arrangements such as the 30% cut. So, what we will see are changes to the way revenue is collected. If you decide to pay for something outside the app, you’ll still need to pay 30% to Apple. Two payments required, or just pay one payment to Apple and Apple all pay the developer.

    • Ramann

      September 13, 2021 at 6:19 pm

YOU clearly didn’t understood anything. Apple owned its 30% commission from *EPIC GAMES* from the time it enabled third party payment method.

      It’s all in 6:41

    • ahall3823

      September 13, 2021 at 9:01 pm

@Ramann Apple is still owed 30% of all revenue as per the contract. Many major news outlets have incorrectly editorialised the judgement. For some reason it’s being reported that outside app payments will remove the requirement for developers to pay Apple a 30% cut. That is wrong.

Apple has become the most disgusting company i’ve seen in my lifetime. They put out trash products at treble the cost and manipulate the naive, ill informed / gullible consumer base into thinking they are decent. No. You’be been had. It’s highly depressing to watch the sheeple all scream how they need a mac when there are things out there twice as good at the third of the price. Then they rounded up their herd and said ‘you all can only use our monetary systems’ – ‘If you make more money than we say you’re allowed to then we get a cut’. That is called being a PROTECTION RACKET. Aka GANGSTERS. Aka MAFIA. People are dumb AF

Years ago I wrote software – gaming software – that ran on both Mac & Windows. It sold world wide without paying Apple or Microsoft a penny. Why pay now? They suck at marketing anything but their own software and demand more than ordinary marketing costs. … This reminds me of Tom Sawyer charging his friends to paint his fence.

  56. Jared Allister

    September 13, 2021 at 2:44 am

“In such a hypothetical world, developers could potentially avoid the commission while benefitting from Apple’s innovation and intellectual property free of charge. The Court presumes that in such circumstances that Apple may rely on imposing and utilizing a contractual right to audit developers annual accounting to ensure compliance with its commissions, among other methods. Of course, any alternatives to IAP (including the foregoing) would seemingly impose both increased monetary and time costs to both Apple and the developers.”
That sound to me even if developers link outside Apple’s IAP system, Apple can (and likely will) still collect its 30% commission.
