It’s fascinating how many doctors forget to mention that “vaping associated lung injury” is caused by ilegal THC vaping cartridges and not by comercial vaping liquids…

Why does every Dr fail to answer the REAL mj vape question. We’re not talking about “vape juice”, we’re talking about dry herb vaped, whooooosh. I mean dry herb vaping has been around for several decades, this recent “vape juice/e-liquid vaping” etc needs its own name. Way to dodge the question doc.

If anyone with lung, heart, and airway knowledge can give me some help-
Sometimes my chest and back hurt and feel tight. To the point where it feels like I’m not getting enough oxygen. My muscles hurt, I’m short of breath and confused/have less cognitive function.
    Any help?

It’s absolutely maddening that there’s been this war started against vaping when all it does is reduce harm. It’s scaremongering tbh. Everyone freaked out when some vapes were sold on the streets with Vitamin E acetate in them(that’s bad)so they closed down all the vape shops(selling good, Vit E-free vapes). Then it became policy, I’m guessing it’s because cigarettes bring in a lot of tax revenue.

I quit a 30 years smoking habit by switching to vape for a couple years, then cold turkey. The vape was much easier on my lungs, but wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as smoking.

I got pneumonia when I was a kid and my pediatrician described the crackles at 2:50 as “rats eating chex-mix” in my lungs.

He even replaced the ear tips on the stesthoscope so I could listen too, and it did indeed sound like some rats were chowing down in there lol

Couple of quick things. As he mentions, the reason oxygen goes in to the blood and carbon dioxide goes out of the blood is diffusion because of the difference in concentration. The gasses want to equalize. Secondly, the hemoglobin has an affinity for carbon monoxide as well as oxygen.

While the Doctor did a great job on the lung anatomy and conditions WIRED should have gotten a Toxicologist for vaping as while we don’t have long term studies there is more then enough evidence to say that vaping is just as harmful as smoking (if not more!) because they contain a wide range of chemical additives and flavourings known to damage your lungs. No vape is safe because the chemical industry is almost entirely unregulated and continue to lie to people about their products being safe. Likewise the reason why women develop lung cancer without smoking is fragrances and cleaning products contain carcinogens and women generally are going to have a higher lifetime exposure. To protect your lungs people need to start paying attention both to radion and the air quality around them and cut down on products known to be toxic.

people are not supposed to be vaporizing vitamin e acetate though, which is the only chemical positively correlated with vape induced lung injury. it was put into black market THC vaporizer cartridges because it visually looks like THC oil, but otherwise provides no useful benefit to the product. vitamin e acetate disrupts the lung surfactants and causes the injury, but regular vaping has never been shown to do that.

Atelectis is horrible you breathe in but don’t get air. I know what it’s like to drown in your own lungs. Cigarette smoke shuts down my ability to breathe. Smokers who think they can go outside to smoke and not bother anyone it hangs around you like Pigpen’s dirt cloud. It’s on your skin in your hair and you exhale it when you breath. I agree with the doc breathe air only.

super helpful! the diaphragm stuff was cool particularly bc i’d always assumed my lung capacity was good bc i played french horn as a kid, which you need a lot of air to do. then when i started wearing a binder as a teenager, my lung capacity went down again. i’d thought that it would’ve been the rib muscles or the lungs themselves that dictated this, but it being the diaphragm makes more sense! super cool 😀

I had heard that the aroma chemicals used in E-Cigs were FDA approved. But since they are intented to be used in food and not to be heated / vaporized, heating and inhaling them is harmful.

“Vaping”, applied to cannabis, is just as likely to refer to vaping pure flower, not juice cartridges. Vape kits for bud like the Pax 3 and Volcano are very popular. I’d love to see an actual answer to the “vape vs combust” question, since I use a lot of flower personally for epilepsy, but everywhere I look I see the same outdated info that only addresses vape carts, as if vape pens & rigs that use raw flower don’t exist.

I refused to vape or smoke marijuana when those things were getting really popular and my friends would ask me why. I said “I really just don’t think that inhaling that stuff is healthy.”

Then I get “oh it’s natural.” “It’s just water.” “it’s impossible to OD on marijuana.”

Now vape injuries are a thing and one of my friends had to bury his kid who ate cannabis gummies and guess what…? They OD’d. The ER called it cannabis poisoning. Terribly tragic.

We have to be more skeptical about these kinds of things. Remember it took 70 years before doctors and companies started being honest about the fact that cigarettes are bad for us. If money is involved, it’s brand new and it’s going into your body be extremely weary!

This dude is amazing with explaining. He did make a mistake, though: emphysema isn’t synonymous with copd. Emphysema is the destruction of air sacs and them joining together, creating bigger sacs, which causes the air trapping that was explained. Copd is a disease with chronic obturation, usually with emphysema and/or chronic bronchitis.

The damage to the lungs that is mentioned a few times in the video has been proven to be caused only by illicit street drug cartridges, which contain an oil that you really shouldn’t vaporize. Vaping normally reduces harm compared to cigarettes by up to 95%.

E-Cigarette of Vaping associated lung injury (EVALI) is not caused by vaping. It is caused by vaping blackmarked vapes with actual oils or vitamin E acetate in them, which will kill you. The traditional bases of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin will not cause these issues.

This isn’t like a thing that just happens to some people who vape. If you aren’t vaping sketchy products, you won’t get VALI.

If you want to keep a cat, smoke, or vape, by all means, do what makes you happy but at least be honest with yourself that you are exposing yourself to some risks. How bad, how big, or how small is not definite but you know it is there. It’s really comical to see people argue how vaping this versus that is somehow better. Hey, it’s your life, your lungs, do whatever you want with them, but don’t kid yourself. Accept the risk like an adult and indulge anyway.

Back in the late 80s when I was a kid, a doctor told us that breathing wintery air would help when I got an asthma attack, if it was took soon to take another dose of my rescue inhaler. So my mom had me bundled up standing outside taking as deep of a breath as I could of the cold air. It felt like it helped. But, if its worse according to Dr. Kalhan, it maybe have just been a placebo effect then. And now that I have grown out of my asthma. I love breathing in cold air, it almost has a soothing effect.

Regarding the cats, people with asthma should also be evaluated for allergies. If their asthma is allergic in nature, treating the allergy (for example, with allergy shots) can significantly reduce or eliminate symptoms.

Stop trying to get people to stop smoking. Literally the air we breathe everyday is worse than smoking. The water you drink everyday is worse than smoking. The car you drive every day is worse than smoking. Your job is worse than smoking. Your electric car is worse than smoking! So let’s stop smoking so we can be murdered by something else!

Young women are usually doing the family’s laundry. Most homes have a washer and dryer in the basement. If many basements have high radon levels, that is probably why young women who don’t smoke get lung cancer.

to add onto 11:22, by “they’re in better shape” he means that their hearts, too (not just the diaphragm), are essentially “bigger”/stronger because of the training, and so it pumps more blood to the lungs (and body) than the average sedentary person. by pumping more blood, there is less of a need to breathe just as much as a non-trained person because of the sufficient amount of oxgen.

All smoke damages your lungs and it gets worse the more tar there is. The amount of tar is determined by how much oil is burning in whatever you are smoking.
Smoke is bad for the lungs because it is solid, not a gas, and so it deposits in your lungs. Cigars are somewhat easier on the lungs because you don’t inhale the smoke however you get a higher risk of throat cancer in exchange.
