Do Animals Have Consciousness?

We know that many different animals have shockingly high levels of intelligence — but how many truly have consciousness? A group of scientists and academics thinks that it just might be… all of them. “The ‘smart’ animal club keeps getting bigger,” Popular Science: #science #sciencefacts #animalshorts #animals

Most achieve consciousness after a period of time. A more intriguing questions is…..Are most animals aware they will die some day? Of course they’re aware of danger but do you think they acknowledge that someday they will cease to exist? It’s hard enough for human brains to think about this. I believe it’s the single most difficult thought a human will ever think. It physically hurts to contemplate your own non existence….Because of the amygdala. If you take certain drugs to lower amygdala activity you wont fear death anymore. I personally hypothesize this physical discomfort is the basis of all religion. The thought of nonexistence hurts so we fantasize about a realty where we still exist…Wherever that may be. Each person decides their own fantasy also known as a delusion.

@@wolfeinhorn4661 – I often wonder how many other people around me understand the true nature of the situation they were born into. Convincing someone they are delusional is a physical impossibility….Because it’s a result of physical nueronal paths inside the brain. The only way to change perception is by restructuring blood flow using drugs, electricity, or trepanation. I am no different than anyone else. My brain is just as unevolved. That being said It’s quite a revelational awakening when certain drugs FORCE you to acknowledge the abhorrent truth about the situation we were all born into and yet still recognize and appreciate the silver linings….What little life we have.

I don’t know, I don’t know what that is for humans and myself, so how would I know that other animals have it. I assume so, but I can’t even tell if I have it half the time.

The question at the end, what even is consciousness, is the real brain twister. In terms of awareness of the self on physical terms, nearly all animate creatures have at least some measure of consciousness. But the sense of self in terms of the mind becomes almost impossible to discern. After all, they can’t exactly describe their thoughts on the subject to us.

Consciousness is an illusion, unless youre a cat. They’re just built different.

Decades before software like Premiere and iMovie made video editing cheap, easy, and accessible for everyone, the only option was chaining a conglomerate of vintage 80s technology – multiple camcorders or VCRs and a TV – to craft custom analog video. Then the Videonics system changed tech history forever.

With professional-grade setups costing up to six figures at the time, the Videonics brought simple editing to the masses at a tiny fraction of the price… in theory. The reality of the Videonics video editing system was a jumbled mess of retro tech that took a near-miracle to make your kid’s 8th grade jazz band concert video look a little more polished.

And getting it all to work over 35 years later? It took 8 VCRs, 2 camcorders, 3 Videonics units and 4 remotes to create a 1987-era YouTube masterpiece. But in the end, it revealed the beauty and drive of the first-generation analog filmmakers and videographers who made YouTube possible for all of us.

Nearly 50 years ago, the Polavision camera blended Polaroid’s revolutionary instant film with on-demand home video – and the result was a landmark advance in analog technology that would become a mystery of science and a winding international journey into vintage tech.

Because now, generations after Edwin Land bet his half-century legacy of innovation and the company he founded on the success of the Polavision, I need to figure out how to get the thing to work… and only one man in the world could help me.

I traveled to Vienna, Austria to meet Florian “Doc” Kaps – the man behind ‘The Impossible Project’ that saved Polaroid from the dustbin of history. With his guidance and his private store of old Polaroid video tapes, perhaps I would be able to record a modern YouTube video with my vintage Polavision camera.

Through it all, Doc immersed me into his world of analog technology and the philosophy behind his mission to re-integrate analog into our daily lives. We cut lacquer records, we felt the fires of an analog restaurant, and we spent too much time trying to resurrect a relic of the past – because technology, vintage and modern, is all about people.
