I’m a nurse in NYC and I’m kind of getting tired of people in my field acting like heroes. Yes we are working hard to keep people alive but there’s this sense of entitlement growing. We signed up knowing an event like this can occur. Stop making videos of our hardship so people can pity us. Do what you gotta do and be humble.

can someone explain to me why they intubate so many people when it has such a high failure rate, and is known to make the lungs burst if they have fluid in them

You are correct in that it can, in some cases, be dangerous to intubate a person. However, you know what also is really dangerous? Not being able to breathe. So it is just a risk and reward calculation that has to be made. Intubation has saved waaay more people than it has harmed and it is a really useful tool for keeping someone alive even when they are incapable of breathing.

They would be dead sooner without the vent I promise. I’m guessing you haven’t watched a persons o2 drop, their stats change, seen then turn grey and watch everything else be attempted first. Placing someone on a vent isn’t desirable, quick or easy.

I am very fascinated by the infectivity of this virus. At times, it seems to be highly infectious, with an R(0) far exceeding 1, sometimes even 2 or 3. Yet, there are times where someone consistently exposed seems to have avoided being infected. So, it begs the question: who is most likely to get infected? Is it a gender issue? An ages issue? A blood type issue? Some unknown genetic marker? There is still just so much to learn about this virus.
