This is potentially a great idea, but I want to see a robot work on a dinged up/damaged/dirty/dusty laptop interior and see how it copes then. They always show a beautifully clean interior but after long, rough life they rarely are, particularly if the user is not particularly tech savvy.

Why do modular devices not take off:
95% of people are not tech-savvy; they want something they can use easily without gimmicks.
Average Granny, Gramps, and Gen Z in first-world countries don’t have that much technical knowledge about clock speed, overclocking, RAID 0, etc., so they want a simple yet astonishing product.
This is the reason Apple’s Mac and other devices sell very well.

This shouldn’t be just a concept, this needs to enter mass production ASAP.

Did he just say you have a laptop you don’t use keyboard or screen and put in a diff laptop ? Then begs question why did you have the original laptop in 1st place and if it’s not been used surely that laptop is in good working order as it has not been turned on ….just saying

Well, if it spent its life docked to a hub that had external KVM, in theory those parts would have been rarely used. They’d have still been subjected to heat cycles but not all the actual screen on-time or physical wear and tear.

Why would companies do this when the Apple business model is still the most profitable? As long as repairability and sustainability isn’t the most profitable, products like these is all just hype.

A modular laptop … That is definitely in the right direction. I *hate* when companies solder on parts; especially things like battery, internal storage, and RAM on a laptop. Those 2 are the things that can be easily replaced/upgraded by even people that are not as technically inclined or experienced.

Dell would never do it…they’ll do when another company have the balls to actually roll it out. It’s the same when all the car company made concept EV in the early 90s but it wasn’t until Tesla actually rolled out with it that they decided to follow. This is true of Dell, they don’t have the balls to green light something that will disrupt the way laptop is made. I see Dell like Kodak, Blockbuster, and the many many companies that have a great idea but don’t roll with it cause it’ll disrupt their current business

Great to see more companies thinking about repairability, even if it’s still in the concept stage. It remains to be seen how easy the parts will be to get along with how long they’ll support it assuming this does go to market.

2022 : this year we announce 12.1inch.
2023 : we announce 12.5inch in a new form factor which is not compatible with 12.1 inch model.
2024 : we introduce a new 12.9inch model with all new form factor and new chassis layout.

🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ but with soldered on RAM and SSD so really not upgradeable or consumer advantageous, rather a cheap marketing play from DELL to make you buy more of their rubbish. This is coming from a 20 year DELL user. Now it’s just Macs for me. Because at least Mac’s just work which is what makes them a good investment if a working tool is what you need to help you make more money more quickly with less hassle.
