I watched a lot of these Wired videos even contents which topics are not my interests but the presenters are engaging and makes me to continue watching…

But this one is kinda boring even if the topic is on my field…

    She lacks energy…

I speed it up to 1.5x to finish the video quickly…

If you have aging parents around tech… find something they love and link it to tech. If they are not afraid of it they are less likely to panic or get enraged and make a mistake. At least that worked with my relatives

  6. @Music-oi4rh

    May 12, 2026 at 6:18 pm

stopped the video when she said warning your relatives about scammers might be a good way to bond with them

With all these Linux exploits of late, surprised they were not mentioned.

    • @NelielSugiura

      May 12, 2026 at 6:50 pm

Also the use of AI (LLMs) to find zero-days and exploit them. Even writing code.
The entire landscape of it is different now and these are heavy topics an expert should certainly cover!

  11. @solanumtuberosa

    May 12, 2026 at 6:55 pm

I love how it begins by gaslighting the first sender into thinking they are a bot.
Also one aspect of hacking people often misunderstood is that malicious hacking is not always clickity clackity on the keyboard and doing magic like media wants you to think. A big part of it is social engineering: understanding how the target thinks, recognising their patterns, vunerabilities and exploiting them. Breaking down a victim is usually easier than breaking down lines of codes.

7:00 Ngl I wish this person didn’t just go full fearmongering when describing the darknet. Did you know that journalists use the darknet? How about whistleblowers? Or people who live in heavily censored countries such as China and Iran? Or maybe someone who doesn’t wanna be tracked 24/7 by google and meta? Just saying

I hate the “em dashes mean AI” trend. I’ve used em dashes forever, usually relying on whatever word processor I’m typing in to convert them. Office (including OpenOffice), Google Docs, even Notion will automatically do that. And I also have WinCompose to easily type accented symbols, which also lets me type em dashes quickly — like this. En and em dashes have been used throughout literary history. Do I *overuse* them? Maybe. I also overuse the 😂 and 😅 emojis. None of that makes me a bot 😂

    • @prayingforrain48

      May 13, 2026 at 4:21 pm

Except for the stilted “this is how I make them” example, you didn’t use a single one, so I’d say, no, you don’t overuse them. It’s weird, every time I see someone saying, “I write just like AI” they never write anything like AI…

  31. @Kat_no_uta

    May 13, 2026 at 1:42 pm

See that right there about blocking websites based of countries is how we know governments partake in systemic sexism and have no qualms about human trafficking and exploitation of women.

They fear sexist riots more than they fear sirvivor riots in regards to all the p sites which aren’t locked and aren’t guaranteeing ethical sourcing of their content with personal responsibility to providers and users.

Insead governments weaponise abuser to establish personal surveillance via age verification laws.

Make your creep behaviour make sense in any non-creepy way. Impossible, huh?!

  32. @knucklesmcjerk7861

    May 13, 2026 at 1:59 pm

She 100% was talking about herself regarding Anon

  33. @joekelly7505

    May 13, 2026 at 2:06 pm

I use em dashes all the time. When I was learning grammar, all the style guides were promoting em dashes as the NEW parentheses. That was in the late 1980’s before Prop 13 killed off the California educational system. I also use monosyllabic words and complex sentence structures, leading many people to think I’m a bot. Sometime even I think I’m a bot.

    • @prayingforrain48

      May 13, 2026 at 4:18 pm

Yet you didn’t use a single dash or complex sentence in your comment about how you use dashes and complex sentence structures all the time. 😛

    • @joekelly7505

      May 13, 2026 at 6:56 pm

@prayingforrain48 Then you’d think I was a bot. And no, a robot wouldn’t be going out of its way to make you think it’s not a robot.

This is what happened when you are profession talking about cybersecurity definitions but never know how to actually hack or scam! She is as blind as a bat. Textbook literate! Hire her to meet company objectives but don’t expect her to secure anything!

    • @prayingforrain48

      May 13, 2026 at 4:16 pm

The dude I’m responding too comes across a bit harsh and a tad sexist, but at the same time, she really was wrong about a lot…

  38. @laramie5239

    May 13, 2026 at 3:40 pm

This is one cool knowledgeable person. I’ve been putting off talking to my parents about these points but I think now is the time. Thanks for all the tips on how to approach it with them!
Edit: Is this one of the most beautiful people I’ve seen in the web since ever? Atup! The knowledge is what does it. I’m so happy critical thinking is being taught. It’s beautiful in every form. I’m also getting goth Jamiroquai vibes. Nice.

Genuine feedback here, please never set yourself on a pedestal within the first minute.

There are scam baiters who know more than you will ever know.

I’m sure you are a lovely person and the fact you made this post means that you have a heart to share your knowledge.

I wish you all the best, but I don’t think social media is for you.

You have to read your audience, so being overly judgemental within a minute, will not gain credibility.

I’m sure beneath the cheap hat and staged outfit is a person who wants to help.

I really wish you all the best, but may I suggest “Read the Room” and “never assume” and “stay humble”

People come to Wired for facts, not your showcase x

  84. @invox_in_your_inbox

    May 15, 2026 at 12:43 pm

One of the best responses is just not to respond. Keep suspicious about anything you receive that you are not sure of. If it’s legit (or “urgent”, like so many claim to be) they will most likelly send another message or contact you directly on the phone. If it’s a Bot just spamming messages, as long as it doesn’t get a response, it will not engage further.

  89. @JorgenVonStein

    May 16, 2026 at 8:53 am

Anti fraud centres build databases of reported frauds / transactions cats etc. but depending on your country it is up to law enforcement to react proactively or not on what is put in those databases. jurisdiction also plays a role in whether or not law enforcement can do anything about it.

  90. @JorgenVonStein

    May 16, 2026 at 8:59 am

Even if the sender of a suspicious link is familiar there is a small chance that their account may have been compromised to send out bad links.

Media might not be the right source of information in all cases (i repeat in “all cases”). There was a case 10 years ago or so where 2 kids (8 and 6 years old) were playing in a parc, the left the parc, crossed a field and entered into a warehouse through a hole in the fence and they were attacked by the dogs guarding that warehouse. All the local media, i mean ALL OF THEM (including some big ones like Vox) reported that a kid was mauled to death by stray dogs in a public park which was not true: its wasnt in a park and they were not strayed dogs. Looking at court documents would be the best source of info, in this case the owner of the warehouse was accused of manslaughter.

Over the course of a month my bank account was locked 6 times. I had many data beaches with the same username but different passwords. I ended up having to change the acct username to stop the attempts. They never guessed the password. It was mostly inconvenient.

I def call BS on the blocking websites but. The USA blocks websites or forces their sale when they dont like the content all the time. Tick Tock being the most famous example. China blocked Meta and Google bc they wouldn’t follow labor and environmental laws AND to protect their domestic tech industry.

Those are more generic and basic scam questions, not hacking questions. Also to the password related questions, don’t use password managers, use 2FA. About cloud, locally encrypt anything before you put it on cloud services.
