The FBI burned down the branch dividians with women and children inside, they had pyrotechnics on sight, by all credible accounts the FBI burned women in children alive in the compound and lied that the Branch Davidians did it themselves. Do your research and stop spreading propaganda, it is disgusting that someone would lie about mothers and fathers burning themselves and their children alive to make themselves look good to the media.

Truth is freedom. I no longer question the authenticity of today’s Bible versions, I learned how corrupt they are. My study solved the conflicts and inconsistencies that have plagued my walk. I found, the men who wrote the books assembled in what is now many versions of the original, are unidentifiable. The books were named long after the texts were written and many edits and omissions have occurred since. Proof? If it was the authentic word of God, why would the Bible be revised over and over again? Thanks to deconstruction and a yearlong investigation into ancient Greek and Hebrew scripture, I can say the modern Bible is fake. It is not what clergy says it is. Yeshua came and went. His mission was completed. Educate the clergy, they get paid to advise yet they know little or they are complicit in the lie. Either way, we all lose.

In the early 80s the unification church lured me into a session. “You are not made to feel that you’ve turned against God simply by leaving a particular church”.
This guy knows a lot about cults, but less about religion. I’m not sure his distinction even makes sense. They don’t count as cults because he’s specifically designed his definition of a cult to exclude them? How convenient. It doesn’t take much searching to find dictionaries with definitions that absolutely encompass religion and besides, we know of cults with multiple leaders.

I started going to meetings of a group that I realized quickly was…weird. What they were saying people could have found if they were exploring spiritually and therapy. It wasn’t unique to them – but when I mentioned that, I got blank looks. The increasing pressure to meet with people almost each night of the week – added slowly so you got deeper and deeper – was what made me stop. I’m not a joiner and I have zero patience for people following anything without questioning it. Guess I’m not a good candidate for cults. Thank goodness.

Why mention Joseph Smith and not Jesus? Why did you not fully read out the message collating cults and religion? Why Is it appropriate to designate North Korea under Kim Jong Un a cult – but it is unethical to consider the ‘cult of personality’ around Trump? I’m not saying I necessarily think all religions are cults (or even that trump is bad) but you are either highly intellectually dishonest, or blind to a severe cognitive bias that make you an inappropriate educator on this subject.

A lot of it is based on emotional appeal. And a strong leader. Regardless of what the beliefs are.
Americans are very susceptible to this. Because everything in their culture primes them to it.
They have a historical background of both Protestant religion and Native American mysticism.
Plus, their culture always encourages people to do everything “on their own.” Which means a greater prevalence of stress and isolation.

November 29, 2024 at 3:32 pm
Regarding Trumpism, I think he’s fundamentally misunderstanding what happens at Trump rallies and political rallies in general. Booing is common, and doesn’t necessarily indicate a rejection of what the speaker is saying. Trump jokes around a lot, and I’m sure the people at his rally thought that is what was happening. Booing is just part of the interactive nature of his rallies.
Also, plenty of cult experts believe Trumpism at least borders on a cult. There are plenty of examples of people rejecting friends and family and changing fundamental beliefs and values in favor of Trump, and Trump certainly using the language of a cult leader according to many experts. I can say unequivocally that my in laws completely flipped their political values once Trump popped on the scene (starting with birtherism).
I suspect this man has either not taken Trump’s behavior seriously enough to study him, or he shares enough of Trump’s beliefs to dismiss the claims out of hand.

Crazy simplification of the whole Waco situation. Yes the Branch Davidians were a cult and a harmful one at that, but there’s strong evidence to suggest that the ATF escalated that situation unnecessarily, put people in additional danger, and when the FBI came in they used flammable tear gas that likely led to the fire. To say cut and dry that David Koresh started the fire is ridding the ATF and FBI of any accountability.

I grew up in a catholic household, and I remember in catholic school being taught that you should value god above everything – even your family. God takes priority over your parents, your spouse, even your kids. When I did finally walk away for good, my parent’s first way of trying to convince me not to was by threatening to tell everyone about it, asking “What would they think?” As a young adult at the time, I at least had the maturity to not really care what they were going to think of me. But that was their first and strongest weapon – shame and ostracization. There were people in my life who cut me out after I walked away. Luckily, I wasn’t reliant on those connections, but not everyone is so lucky. Especially when you grow up in communities that have such an iron grip on religion, where it’s like “Yeah, you’re free to walk away. But if you do, all your friends, family, and everyone within a 50-mile radius of you will never talk to you again.” When you’re a teenage or young adult who doesn’t have the capability of leaving that area, having that happen would shatter your life. And even if you can, doing so still means leaving behind everything you’ve known. And keep in mind, this is just ONE tactic. My relationship with my parents is better now, but I don’t think it will ever be “fixed” completely. Not when you’re raised like that, and not when you had a childhood where your own parents constantly told you how stupid you were for daring to question your religion and ask questions, making fun of you to the point where a few times you had to cry yourself to sleep at night. While as an adult, they obviously don’t have that same influence on my religious freedom, the fact that they would never even think to apologize for what they did, or even acknowledge that it was wrong, makes it a relationship that can never be “fixed”. I’ve let go of the anger since then. You forgive, not because they deserve forgiveness, but because you deserve peace. But that doesn’t mean you have to be close with them. And you don’t even have to let them back into your life. It’s your choice.

MLMs are cults. The coercive tactics they use is acceptance, compliments, and ego boosting. They use deceptive isolating tactics by encouraging the person to push sales on friends and family until family and friends go no contact. You are basically shunned if you decide not to sell the products, don’t attempt to bring anyone into it. Most of the products sold are fraudulent and outright fakes. Health products that have killed people, hair products that damage hair, essential oils that do absolutely nothing but smell nice. Many cult religions like Jehovahs Witnesses push these MLMs to strengthen their hold on the congregation. There’s a reason why these MLMs bring religion into everything because all religions are a cult.

I left Mormonism at around age 33. I was so in it. So believing. Did all the things. Went to church. Read the Book of Mormon. Went to Seminary. Mutual. Was “modest”. Went to a Mormon college. Got my endowments out. Got sealed in the Mormon temple. Etc. It is 100% a cult.
I feel like maybe he was saying the church doesn’t teach that people who leave have turned against god but they 100% absolutely do, including teach that those who leave are “lazy learners”, more interested in darkness than light, etc. All sorts of harmful and insulting things.

I’m very disappointed in Wired’s lack of due diligence here. There’s no such thing as psychological “deprogramming”. Self-professed deprogrammers use the exact same abusive brainwashing tactics as the cults themselves, including kidnappings and worse. Nothing is being fixed, just rebroken and reshaped into something people mind less.
Ross now makes his living as a “cult educator” and doing media hits because actual deprogramming is often legally actionable.
There’s literally a note on Rick Alan Ross’ Wikipedia page that states, “Deprogramming is a controversial tactic. Sociologists Anson Shupe and David Bromley note that deprogramming involves ‘kidnappings, forcible detentions, and exorcism-like rituals’ of unwilling participants. According to John E. LeMoult, deprogramming is often ‘far more like ‘brainwashing’ than the conversion process by which members join various sects.’ Key court cases have found deprogramming to be illegal for violating the constitutional rights of members of new religious movements.”

People who insist they’d never get ensnared by a cult remind me of people who swear they’d never end up in an abusive relationship. That confidence can make it harder to accept if it does happen and you need to get out! So many “smart, highly paid, confident” people still end up abused, and they’re ashamed to be in that situation. I’ve seen abusive relationships called “a cult of two” and tbh a lot of the controlling tactics seem similar.

Sorry, I disagree with Ross about Rumpism being a cult. The word isn’t being used to “denigrate” the movement; it’s being used to describe it, and cult is an accurate description of elements of his following. Rumpism is not a legitimate political philosophy; it has no ideas, no policy positions, no value or morals that it promotes or acts on; it is, like the cult of Mussolini, pure will to power, pure bigotry and hatred toward those it sees as different; pure evil.

It’s also relevant to note that in the ancient world the term ‘Cult’ (or its linguistic equivalents) didn’t mean what it means now, it was more of an indication of a specific dedicated following to a given deity within a polytheistic pantheon (i.e: The Cult of Dionysis). Nonetheless, great video.

December 3, 2024 at 4:29 pm
Christian Science, not well-known now, was a Faith healing cult led by Mary Baker Eddy. To give just one example… When I was in my early twenties, I was finally diagnosed with epileptic seizures, having gone through many medical tests to find what was wrong. I called up my mom and told her I had epilepsy. She called me back the next day and said… your father and I have decided that you don’t have epilepsy. Luckily, I was old enough to control my medical care. But it can be seen how such a belief would confuse a child by denying reality. And how much physical suffering a child goes through when s/he gets really sick and is ignored because the symptoms aren’t “real”.
@mrcroob8563
December 3, 2024 at 4:29 pm
Your misrepresentation of the Waco incident is kind of disgusting honestly. They were not making illegal weapons, they were making weapons and the ATF was worried they were making assault rifles, which they weren’t. The davidians invited the ATF to come into the compound and investigate, they refused land later decided to assault the compound with nothing but random unconfirmed rumors of child abuse. The ATF fired first and most likely started that fire you said the davidians started to kill themselves.

kinda shocked all the people in the comments calling this person tame when fundamentally what he is doing is still up for debate as to whether or not it counts as breaking human rights. This also shows a complete lack of knowledge of a history of religions or the etymology of the word cult, as MANY religions, such as Christianity, started with many denominations self describing as a cult, as it has been flipfloping between a good and a bad thing depending on who you ask at what time for centuries. Getting people out of abusive situations is one thing, but the focus should always be on the abusive situation, the whole idea surrounding cults has become almost a larger than life evil in too many people’s mind for this to be serious especially with the rise in christian nationalize, and a long history of trying to exterminate the other because its “inherently evil” for some reason.
I would argue that since the only thing that maters is the abusive situation, many catholic churches should be related under an umbrella term if one were to be used, considering lasting and continuing allegations, I would argue that the jewish ritual to mutilate an infant’s genitals is abuse, I would argue the notion that you should marry within your religion (something common in many religions) is to some degree a level of social isolation. This kind of splitting hairs between a definition between cult and religion cause so many problems and this whole field has enough issues that maybe JUST ASKING A PSYCHOLOGIST, about how to help people out of abusive situations would have been far more helpful, than some guy making money in an unscientific business scheme with questionable morality and ethics, in a field with a history of literal genocide.
@Adsper2000
December 3, 2024 at 6:53 pm
Cults are inherently evil. By definition, they are movements of fantastical religious hysteria of objectively false claims, whose ultimate goal is social fragmentation and the decline of sane society to further their own imaginary brand.
Religion is also bad, but most modern believers ignore 90% of the nonsense in the Bible or don’t even take it seriously at all. They’re not comparable.

I add this only because Wired and its guest speakers are all about clarifying and informing; Western European languages except English use the term secte (FR) Sekte (German) Setta (Italiano) and seita (Port) or secta (Spanish) for this type of group. Speakers would perhaps have less trouble explaining the difference in the use of “cult of Isis” or “cult of Bal” and so forth if they used “cult” in its more conservative and older way as other languages do in Europe still do. Someone has suggested the mistake has occurred because of mix up with the term occult (hidden, secret) which is etymologically unrelated to cult and is instead a cognate of the -ceal in conceal

So Trump isn’t a cult leader but his movement attracts other politically aligned cults to his party? I think that’s a bit lenient on Trump and a convenient answer for something that has shown actions that very closely resemble cults. Just because the followers already lean towards a certain direction doesn’t mean they can’t fall into a cult, it just means the leaver is easily identified.
@allyc8904
December 4, 2024 at 9:53 am
I totally disagree about trump not being a cult. I have seen people completely change their thinking and while that one incidence you mentioned shows they can push back, that was once event. They are afraid to criticize him ever, they immediately forgot that mention of vaccines (and they seem to have forgotten the shots were created under his administration). They dismiss every infraction and anti-American, anti-worker, etc utterance. If Nazism was a cult, so is trumpism. And I see many people totally change and seem in a trance–like Lindsay Graham for instance. See videos of him before he decided to workshop trump and now. All it took was for Graham to be yelled at by people in an airport to totally change. There is an enormous backlash against anyone who speaks even slightly critically of trump, with death threats and stalkers, etc. How is that not a cult?! It bares every marker of a cult, with Fox and OAN being the echo chamber of information isolation.
In my opinion, Trump’s crowd booed because he had already been speaking out against vaccines as had Fox News and others prior to that statement. The crowds had already absorbed that message loud and clear, so they were primed to be against it. Then the fact that many people around them also booed just boosted it. They immediately forget and forgave his tresspass and act like he never said it, ignore that he got vaccinated as did ever Fox News person.

The only difference between a religion and a cult is how much real estate they own. In our country, we uphold “deeply held beliefs” to be as revered as highly as facts, which really trains people not to think critically and justifies believing whatever you want to put faith in over whatever has evidence. It creates a critical thinking swamp that people are a lot more likely to get stuck in.

Really love this video but astrology is a super ancient and complex system that is overshadowed by pop culture’s version of it. If you dig deeper, it actually gets very specific. Like people with heavy Capricorn placements are stern about grammar and often have broad shoulders. Not saying that every single thing is correct, but it’s a lot more broad and complicated than reading a list of signs. No one’s birth chart or points are exactly the same, but Astrology is very much watered down in this culture. You can also use it to anticipate certain events, life shifts, and new relationships if you study it. I loved this talk but just had to say Astrology goes way deeper than that. It can be learned about without cults though!

People are more lost in the U.S and lacking identity, so they go searching for meaning and a feeling of belonging to something. He obviously just doesn’t want to admit this because it makes his country look bad….which it is.

it’s true, though. america affords a far broader sense of what constitutes a “religion” than other countries. that’s not a “win” for america and he didn’t come off as insinuating as such. he was merely stating that, per the 1st amendment, religion is protected and it can be abused by cults to “legitimize” their movements as “religions,” as was the case with scientology.
though i do agree that there is a “lack of identity” in the USA because the country itself is a melting pot of multiple cultures. there really isn’t one cohesive “culture” that can be attributed in the traditional sense. this is beneficial in many ways, but most americans are accused of “not having a culture” by people in the UK or france or wherever else, merely because the country’s “history” as a unified nation is less than 300 years old compared to countries who have thousands of years worth of culture behind them. american culture gets boiled down to “muh freedoms” in memes. of course americans will feel lost when everywhere else in the world tells them as much.

Japan is the land of cults. Both in the extended sense (worshipping pop idols) and the “classical” sense, because there is hardly any institutionalized religion, which allows cults to fill a void that’s maybe not as big in many other countries.

I mean I would argue that Mormonism still fits the description of a cult. At least some factions.

the FLDS for sure is a cult. with regular mormons, it definitely seems to vary.

As someone who was raised in a family cult and have faced decades of healing, it’s nice to see that others are finally seeing what we forgotten victims have been through.

Let me clarify a few things: You know you’re in a cult if you wear a red hat, or if you are the member of any religion. He’s so wrong in saying that you’re not made to feel like you’ve turned against god if you leave your religion. Name one. Scientology? Mormonism? Judaism? Islam? Hinduism? Amish? In every religion you are shunned if you leave the church. Some shunning is passive, but most are very aggressive. Your family disowns you, your friends disown you, and in some cases it leads to violence against you. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that your religion is not a cult. It is.

Man you represented Waco so incorrectly, if it were a person, you’d be charged with slander. It was that bad.

Trump is a narc… absolutely a cult leader. Mormonism is also absolutely a cult, though less destructive. Also some people can be a part of a cult, while not affected by the loyalty cults require. Controversially, two other destructive cult leaders: Gandhi and Mother Teresa.

I went to a middle school who was run by a “cult”, but after watching this video, I realize that they really aren’t. They have none of the signs talked about. No charismatic leader, no strict control over member’s lives, no issues with asking questions, and no abuse (at least to the depth at which I’ve been exposed to). Seems like they might have been in the past but since the cult leader died it changed. Now they’re just weird but harmless hippies.

Americans are so susceptible to cults because the state there is not its own cult.

13:36 It’s interesting that the first amendment protects religious beliefs/ideology, yet so many americans – typically “right wing” – who are insistent on their right to free speech and firearms will hatefully target religious people/groups they disagree with. So much for upholding the constitution lol.

As someone who was born into a cult, I always tell people that I wish I had joined it instead of being born in it. My reasoning is because people who join can always remember before the cult and for me there are only cult memories.

Genuinely surprised no questions about freemasonry. We get called a satanic cult so much it dulls the words, despite every position being democratically voted for, us being encouragemed to involve/help each others friends and families instead of cutting them off, and satanism being the only disallowed religion.

Anyone wondering what makes Americans succeptible or who feels like cult definitions need updating should check out The Knitting Cult Lady. She is very knowledgeable and is working on a book about how America is FULL of a wide variety of cults.
