I’m a Chemist and I’ve worked for a little while with fuel analysis and I had to wear a semi facial mask when dealing with Gasoline and Diesel even with the exhaustion hood on, so yeah, definitely don’t sniff or pour gasoline on your skin.
What a great video, she is very didatic and so excited with the experiments, just great all around.

Xenon doesn’t inhibit reactor power because it’s inert; it does so because it absorbs neutrons pretty effectively (meaning they can’t be absorbed by the uranium, “poisoning” the nuclear reaction)

Gasoline is a dense molecule that would get in your lungs when you breathe it in.
The cigarette would have to land right in the liquid, not vapour.
The lighter wouldn’t light gasoline.
The large amounts of gasoline vapour wouldn’t cause an explosion.
Xenon is unreactive so would slow down the reactions in the reactor.

14:21 I thought water could *_increase_* reactivity as well, by slowing down neutrons to make them thermal neutrons, thereby allowing them to more efficaciously perpetuate a chain reaction. If neutrons are moving too fast, they have a hard time interacting with fissionable materials. Well, that was my understanding anyway.

If it was me dissolving a body I would not go with something like Aqua Regia because its used in gold refining and quite expensive, I would go for something like Aqua Fortis or Piranha Solution. Ah the good old days.

Adhesive (“glue”) is usually a polymer, like the nylon she made but slightly different. Removing adhesive can be done by reversing this polymerization reaction, instead of dissolving in a solvent.

About Chernobyl, Thermal spectrum reactors use moderators, like Carbon or water to slow neutrons in order for them to be more likely to split atoms. Control rods are made of Boron, which completely absorbs neutrons, so it stops nuclear reactions. The control rods in the Chernobyl reactor had an attachment on the bottom which was made of Carbon. This meant that the fuel would react most at the portion deepest in the reactor, and only stop when the rod was pushed all the way through. The idiot in charge had the rods pulled all the way out. When the reactor started to overheat, the introduction of the moderator, before the Boron, was like dumping gasoline on a fire.
VX was originally created as a pesticide, but it turned out to be more toxic to people. What is funny about this is that most pesticides were originally developed to kill people.

The VX Nerve Agent at 21:22 was actually shown as a thick liquid gel not a gas which began to react with air causing it to evaporate through what I assume is an exothermic reaction via a chemical also in the gel reacting with the air.

HF is far more dangerous to living creatures than it is to dead creatures.
HF is the 2nd smallest molecule in existence (beat only by H2). And much like H2 can leak through a rubber balloon, HF can seep through skin very rapidly. It actually bypasses your nerves and thus the most horrifying aspect is that you don’t really know that you’ve been burned until much later. It also has a particular affinity for calcium, which is an issue for your bones.
Would HF be okay at dissolving a human body? Sure, any sufficiently concentrated acid will do a decent job of it. It’ll just take a while. But there are many many many better options if you’re looking for speed or efficiency. The most obvious example would be something that is probably in almost everyone’s medicine cabinets right now. Although the concentration in the household version is only 3%. Get that to any sufficiently concentrated value and it will eat through anything organic that it touches.

You’re mostly right about the Xenon! What’s important to mention though is that the ‘burning off’ of Xe-135 isn’t a chemical process, but a nuclear one. Xe-135 is part of U-235’s decay chain, so it naturally tends to build up a bit as the reaction goes on. It’s also very, very good at absorbing neutrons, and fewer neutrons flying around equals a slower reaction. Iirc, it has a half-life of about 9 hours, so after a shutdown, you need to wait a couple hours for it to decay away into less troublesome isotopes. The workers at Chernobyl were under a lot of pressure to perform a specific test, and they ended up trying to ‘overpower’ the Xenon.

Some of these aren’t so much about chemistry as they are about physics and biology. She tried to comment on them but not really her area of expertise. The Black Panther and Terminator ones would be more for a material physicist, Chernobyl and Radium Girls ones for a nuclear physicist/medical physicist/radiation safety experts, and Casino Royale and The Rock are for a toxicologist .

Well, for some glues gasoline works quite well and it is something people had around in the past. I would not recommend inhaling it or dousing with it, it is not healthy.
And the elephant toothpaste reminded me of high school chemistry when my prof run out of 3% peroxide (that was the rest of the class using) and my experiment went wrong because I was using 30% one. It is fun stuff but produces way too much oxygen.

The more colours you see, the more likely that it is fake. Most chemicals are colourless or white, coloured chemicals are in the minority and when you find them in household chemicals it is most likely dyed.

Hydroflouric acid is also extremely dangerous and toxic……. OMG………..Xenon in solid nuclear fuel rods like Chernobyl does not BURN OFF chemically…….it DECAYS as per its predictable half life. Its problem in nuclear fuel is its ability to consume the neutrons needed to sustain fission, and so allowance in the core and control rods is introduced to overcome the build up and presence of Xenon, which is itself a fission product. This was discovered at the “B” reactor at the Hartford facility in Washington state during WW2, when the Manhattan project was breeding plutonium.

Strange that you would get the first one wrong. Just because it’s a “weak” acid (and btw, HF is not exactly a weak acid, there is literature that explains how it fully dissociates and then forms close ion pairs of H3O+ and F-) doesn’t make it worse at dissolving a person. You can test it on raw meat…HF works better than your average strong acid because of how the fluoride interacts with the flesh and bones. If you want to dissolve gold or other metals, go ahead and use aqua regia, but if you want to dissolve glass, bones, or meat, use HF. Then, your comment about glue being non-polar…hmm…which glue? Many, though not all glues are actually polar.

Fun fact due to the Leidenfrost effect you can dunk your hand in liquid N2 to grab something without getting burned as long as you do it quickly enough. I did it in my undergrad research lab all the time since we worked with liquid N2 and it wasn’t always worth taking the time to find a spoon or tongs or whatever to fish the test tubes out.

aqua Regia is great, but you could also use fluoroantimonic acid, the strongest acid I know of.
you could also use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid solution (piranha solution)

A chemist talking about nuclear reactions is like a biologist talking about chemistry. It is a very common misconception that nuclear reactions are chemistry, but they’re not! Anyone with a BSc usually has basic knowledge in all hard sciences, but we’re experts in whatever field our degree is in. I’m glad she’s familiar with nuclear physics, but it would have been better to ask for a physicist’s review of it! (Please note that I am a chemist & an engineer, and I think most of these apply well to our discipline, just not that specific clip!)

They used hydrofluoric acid in BB because they already got it for their cooking (the first time they use it Walt is only concerned about finding the plastic container wich imply they already had the acid)…except there are 2 types of acids in meth and none of them are HF (thank you google) so I guess they used it to clean equipment or is just Vince Gilligan (the creator of the show) purposely misleading the audience cuz he always said he did’nt want the show to be a tutorial on how to cook meth.

The digitalis is an antiarrhythmic drug with an extremely narrow therapeutic window, which essentially means that a slight more than prescribed can kill you. Also explains why they administered digibind antitoxin in the aston martin following this scene.

Hydrazine poisoning/contamination is a big plot point in Europa Report. They have to leave an astronaut to die outside the ship after an accident leaves his suit coated in hydrazine, which would poison the rest of the crew if they let him back inside

HF was chosen because it has a special property that will allow it to dissolve tissue and bone but not plastic. That’s why in season 1 when Jesse doesn’t use HF there are problems.

One correction. The rods were boron, not graphite, they did have graphite tips though, which accelerated the reaction for a short time, that however was long enough to drive up the negative void coefficient and cause the explosion

Well, now I know how to dissolve a body…I just remembered something. My older brother was in science class working with the old Bunson Beakers. The teacher told everyone to turn off the heat source. Well..he turned it UP instead of OFF and burned a ceiling tile because the flame went so high! A few years later, I was in that same class as we went to the dame high school. the teacher saw my last name, walked over to me, and goes, ” Is your brother named Anthony?” I said yes. He points up to a newer-looking ceiling tile above my head and says, ” Remember the Bunson beaker incident? I’m watching you, Tompkins!” Lol

Overall I think she did pretty good. But she got the poison completely wrong in James Bond, Casino Royale. I’m not sure why she assumed the poison was sodium cyanide. He was poisoned with digitalis. The reason we know it’s digitalis is because they literally said that the poison was digitalis. That’s why he used the antidote for digitalis known as Digibind or Digifab.

I don’t see how the acidity of HF correlates withits ability to corrose a body. In my chemistry undergrad lectures we did talk about it and I’m pretty sure HF can cause significant damage to bones and tissues.

As someone who has been hit with several kinds of Hydroxides, I respectfully disagree with 10:28. No it wont burn like in the movie, but I assure you it is rather painful. Also, as someone who has been on the bad side of Cyanide, I can assure you that one would need more then a drop if Bond was only going to take a sip. Though there are other poisons that would be that lethal.

Just adding something to the Fight Club explanation. Burning your hand with something like KOH or NaOH hurts, a lot. But it develops slowly. As she said, first you feel soapy, then you feel little tickles, those tickles then go to a burning sensation. I don’t know what happens next, 100% of the time you got your hand under running water by the time you feel your hand soapy.

A note on gasoline my dad used to put his cigarettes out in the gasoline he was cleaning car parts with. Gasoline is a lot like flour as long as it’s concentrated it’s the vapor that’s flammable.

If you’re gonna dissolve a body, don’t use HF, or aqua regia. Both are relatively slow and incomplete. Use piranha solution instead.

What also drove me nuts in the HF as a dissolvent scene was the fact that they had it stored in plastic bottles in a High School. No sane High School would have HF and WW would be a madman to handle it like that. Should have simply switched it with HCl and the scene could have worked a lot better.

It’s like in Terminator, ammonia and mothballs do not make an explosive. I’m not going to say what actually is used for the same reason.
I made the explosive in question back in college, so I know it works. It’s horrible stuff, incredibly unstable. Tell kids how to make explosives, you wind up with kids missing fingers, eyes, hands… So the real formula is not ammonia and mothballs.

Please don’t reach into liquid nitrogen with any gloves that will wick up liquid (like the cyrogenic gloves she used here), you will get very bad burns. The only reason it was ok here was because she was very quick (and experienced). The correct way is to use tongs or a sieve to fish out your samples (or hotdogs in this case), or if you don’t have any of those using your bare hands very very quickly would be better than using gloves that can take up and retain liquid.

Acid isn’t great at dissolving organics. You want a base bath (KOH in isopropanol) for dissolving the non-boney bits and then acid for the bones.

There’s one clarification that’s needed here regarding the Chernobyl episode. “Burning off” of xenon-135 is not directly related to temperature. It’s a nuclear reaction where xenon-135 absorbs a neutron and becomes xenon-136, which unlike xenon-135 doesn’t slow down the uranium chain reaction. Yes, the release of heat in the reactor is in direct correlation with the release of neutrons that “burn off” xenon-135, so what Kate says in the video is sort of correct. However the video may make you think that heat somehow burns xenon, which is not what’s happening there.

Sodium hydroxide burns are actually very bad, especially since the powder is on wet skin and NaOH really gets hot with water, I’ve been burned by it and can definitely burn as bad as an acid

bruh why is a chemist explaining a nuclear reaction? i’m a chemist too but her explanation is just wrong. she says that xenon is inert so it slows down the reaction, this isn’t a chemical reaction, this is a nuclear reaction, xenon-135 “poisons” the core because it has a high neutron absorption cross-section, it just means that most neutrons produced by the core in the low power state just get absorbed by the xenon, and not by the uranium, so you can’t increase the power in the core until all the xenon has “burned out” (not the chemical menaning of burning, it just means that by absorbing a neutron it gets converted to some other element that doesn’t absorb neutrons that much).
As a chemist and a nuclear enthusiast this kinda grinds my gears

Aqua Regia would be great. Concentrated HCl works just fine and is widely available at hardware stores, but your take on HF is somewhat misleading. Yes, it is a weak acid and yes the H3O species is the thing we measure for acidity. But what you want when dissolving something is corrosiveness, and Fluorine ions are pretty much the King when it comes to reactivity and therefore corrosive behavior. Therefore both the cation and anion get in on the fun.The thing they completely get wrong in the video you sampled is that HF is a gas at room temperature not a liquid. And also it wouldn’t take anything like multiple gallon jugs of it to dissolve a human body.
Making soap? Not on your hand: out of your hand. 😉
Elephant toothpaste: All those little bubbles are full of H and O gas. So a glowing wooden splint into the foam is great fun part II. And hey: easy on the catalyst, a little dab will do ya… its the whole point of doing that demo.
BTW, Totally agreed with the Chernobyl clip explanation. He did a brilliant job. My wife and I applauded during that scene when we watched the series (She’s a real chemist, I just teach the stuff).
With you on the Mr Bean thing 100%. When I watch shows that have chemists w/o goggles mishandling materials I want to cry. I may or may not have loudly and authoritatively said “Goggles!” during some videos when such things occur. In public.
The Rock: Couldn’t our little glass balls just be depressurized into gas phase? I know its a reach. But I loved the movie for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that a biochemist is the hero.
The Martian: saw it the theater, turned to my wife saying: that’s going to go boom when he walked away after constructing it, a couple scenes before happened. But overall was able to suspend my disbelief and enjoyed the movie.
Have to say though, not always happy when they include biochemistry. Particularly when the scientist creates an anecdote/cure in a few hours, even faster if a gun is held to their head while working. And all he needs is a few brightly colored liquids in glassware!
