Bose’s latest Bluetooth speaker not only sounds better than the competition, but it’s actually a good value at $150, which could be a surprising thing to say about anything from Bose. CNET’s David Carnoy compares it with some of the best Bluetooth mini speakers and tells you why it should be near the top of your short list if you’re looking for a travel-friendly wireless speaker that’s fully waterproof.

I listened to lots of music but for the video we have to use non copyrighted tracks. The first track in the video is called Time For Miracles by The Cave Birds and second track is called Wild and Crazy by Mr. Robotic. They are on Spotify.

The Amazon description says it has Bluetooth 5.1, your review says Bluetooth 4.

Quite possible Bose got it wrong on its website.

      November 10, 2021 at 1:41 pm

Bose website lists Bluetooth 4.2 under specs (at bottom under “Bluetooth”)

    • David Carnoy

      November 10, 2021 at 2:56 pm

Confirmed with Bose. It is Bluetooth 4.2. They are correcting Amazon. Thanks for pointing it out. You have changed the world in a small way 😉

Hello David! Thank you so much for your review. I have the older Soundlink Mini II… does this speaker sound better than that one? I’ve always loved this little speaker. ????

    • David Carnoy

      November 10, 2021 at 4:18 pm

I don’t have the Mini II around still but my guess is that the Flex does sound better from what I remember of it. It’s more travel friendly as well.

@David Carnoy Thank you so much for the response! It’s on my Christmas list!

    • Miguel Kiesse

      November 11, 2021 at 2:51 am

@David Carnoy no way the flex is more travel friendly. The flex is 50% bigger. About the same weight.

    November 10, 2021 at 3:52 pm

Wow, a $100 speaker (at most) that cost an extra $50 because of the brand name…….sign me up (sarcastic voice).

    • SanJose408Alex

      November 11, 2021 at 4:44 am

Would this only matter if I wanted to get two of these? I dont know anything about speakers

    • Blake Pereira

      November 12, 2021 at 7:18 pm

@SanJose408Alex speakers that tiny having stereo is almost indistinguishable on separating sounds, so it really doesn’t matter. Having two mono (no sound separation) speakers in stereo would be ideal for sound separating, more volume/dynamics, bigger soundstage and bass,- mix is being played how intended – ex. like how your car will play some parts on different speakers throughout a mix. Hope that helps!

  16. Jeffrey Ing

    November 10, 2021 at 5:10 pm

Mono?? ???? This is an Amazon speaker with a bose label

Hi David, one quick question… Does this model replace the Soundlink Color II? Awesome review as always!

    • David Carnoy

      November 11, 2021 at 2:21 pm

I don’t think so. SoundLink Color II is still available. Decent deal for refurbished unit from Bose for $79.

this is true. This speaker is great. The sound quality is amazing. I am finding myself hearing lyrics in songs that i’ve never heard because the sound is so clear.
And yes, it is true, the base you can feel in your chest.

I’m still rocking the Sony SRS X3 speaker from like 5 years ago. Sound is great, but I’d like a little more bass and better battery life. Call quality however was great

  25. Felix Five

    November 11, 2021 at 7:00 am

Could it beat my soundlink 2? That can pair to two devices and throw out good sound and it’s getting on 5 years old

Bose wanted to set up in kolkata and couldn’t. He instead went to USA where he could. That’s what India is where it is.????

After just trying two Bose QC352 headphones, I don’t trust the company. It is content to sell products with half-baked functionality.

  30. Bryan Mc

    November 11, 2021 at 4:58 pm

Why do many Bose reviews take a snide attitude towards Bose “value”? Bose products have never been the most expensive in the market, they’ve also never been the cheapest. Bose has been a leader in audio exactly because consumers have always felt them a “good value” for the $$. This is a cheap shot from CNET.

So all you folks think the sound of distortion and buzzing in the background (3:56) to be a “great sounding” speaker? Yes, I realize that David explained about the distortion “at higher frequencies…”, this speaker was not turned up loud, at least not in my opinion.
