@Aak193 VTOL always has been, and always will be more hazardous than fixed wing multiengine. BTW, the idea that these contraptions would ever relieve road congestion is beyond stupid.

No redundancy for that one rotor. Single point of failure leads to death. That’s not better. You know how many helos are lost each year in the military? People die almost every year from helo crashes. Considering the amount of traffic compared to other forms of travel I’m thinking helo flight is the least safe. I always hear about military helo crashes.

@John Doh Don’t think – get the facts. The overall rate of helicopter crashes is only slightly higher than that of airplane crashes, and the fatality rate is actually slightly lower for helicopters.

As someone who lives under a helicopter highway, I can tell you it truly sucks. They are obnoxiously noisy, and rattle my windows and drywall 15 times a day. I can’t wait until the transition to quieter evtol is complete.

Prefer the Lilium and Joby approach where all props provide both lift and thrust. This has 9 props 8 to lift while the one pusher contributes nothing for vertical ascent or decent and then during winged forward flight 8 props ate shut down and the one pusher is engaged. Too much non contributing props in both modes of flight.

    • John Doh

      July 31, 2022 at 4:52 pm

It’s similar to the old jump jets but they used thrust vectoring and the engine remained fixed. I imagine this newer thrust vectoring is more efficient because I don’t think you’d get the same kind of turbulance in the redirection of the exhaust that the jump jets use.

This is a good idea but this will only work if it flies from a city to cities several away or seven hundred miles away or even within the state.

    • John Doh

      July 31, 2022 at 4:34 pm

It will work if it makes the company a profit and trying to say what the market is, is pretty naive. You have no IDEA what the market it for this. Businesses could use this to move management from one place to another because the ground route is too congested, as one example.

    • Antho More

      July 31, 2022 at 4:44 pm

@John Doh that maybe so but this will most likely work in few major cities.

    • Philip

      August 1, 2022 at 7:42 am

Perfect for dense countries like Japan or the UK. I would love this to get me to work on my 116km line of sight commute. it would be just over a 30 minute flight instead of a 2 and a half hour drive each way.

That’s one inefficient device, with a very poor aerodynamics and most likely very expensive. There is a reason for the aircraft equipped with internal combustion engines to be so sleek and that is the efficiency.

    • John Doh

      July 31, 2022 at 4:44 pm

I would disagree 100% when you consider the category of plane this is. It’s a VTOL. YOU might not like the efficiency of a VTOL and it’s true they aren’t as efficient as a plane. But a lot of times you can’t use a plane.

The US military uses VTOL and their craft has continual issues with them and they keep crashing and killing people. I LIKE the concept of this because it seems like rotating engines from one position to another seems to be too problematic.

If I’m a CEO at a company HQ in some 30 story building, taking off from the roof and landing 50 miles away saves a LOT of time no matter how else you try to travel, even better and safer than a helicopter or it should be. Unless of course this HQ happens to be built right beside a terminal at an airport. I’ve never seen anything like it, but I guess?

So, lots of use cases and yes it’s less efficient than a typical plane, but that’s not the point. The point is travel when flying a plane isn’t the better option.

And last point, the aerodynamics aren’t going to be a key consideration because this isn’t going to fly at 100 mph + where air resistance would be a bigger factor the faster you go.

    • alex3261

      August 1, 2022 at 7:59 am

@John Doh Usualy the large companies CEOs are not particularly interested in the efficiency of the vehicles they are traveling with, as they use private jets, helicopters, large vehicles and so on. So I’m not surprised that such a person does not care about the inefficiency of an other electric gizmo, in the shape of a VTOL aircraft/
Also, the rooftop airtaxi idea was compromised many years ago, following some serious helicopter accidents and I don’t know if the FAA would clear that again. The electric air micromobility , although tempting at the first sight, has the potential for some very serious accidents in the much crowded skies.
As a final note, it is interesting that a presumably busy and imporant ceo like you finds the time to establish a john doh face Youtube account and to troll people online. Also interesting that CNET highlights trolls coments…

maybe use bicycles to combat congestion instead? seems a lot easier

    • John Doh

      July 31, 2022 at 4:45 pm

Yeah tell a CEO making 50 million a year that he’s going to ride a bicycle to get 50 miles, and I think you’re going to be looking for another CEO.

    • Thatsme849

      July 31, 2022 at 4:55 pm

@John Doh that’s not what I meant. If a lot of people ride bicycles then the congestion wouldn’t be so bad an mr CEO wouldn’t need this

    • Lee Knoz

      August 1, 2022 at 10:38 am

It’s all about cost, a few planes or millions of miles of new roads or pathways that will have to be constantly maintained, and there is lots of benefits to flying. You can live in remote places with no roads. Now if you said use motor bikes…

Why, in your wrapup, did you ask what we thought of Autopilot versus Gobi and Archer? Why not versus Lilium Jet as well, and several more competing prototypes?

  22. xevious2501

    July 31, 2022 at 8:37 pm

The only names you need to know in the emerging evtol industry is Joby, Lilium Jet, and Ehang. and of those three, ide put extra focus on Lilium Jet, as they are the only evtol developer who’s design removes exposed rotors from the equation. and of whos layout is extremely scalable. From a 4 seater, on up to 16 passengers all whilst complying to Faa EASA flight regulations helipad constraints. This is crucial to profits. In other words these aircraft can only be but so big if they plan on landing on helipads. yes in regards to long term investment. Evtol has a ton of uses, and is currently valued as a multi trillion dollar industry in the future. And its future is pretty much guaranteed. as Global warming and sea level rise will see to increased issues with land based infrastructure. put plainly. Due to global warming, when the seas rise to dangerous levels your gov, city and state will not be building more and more bridges or trains. The way to get about will be via aircraft that can not only hop short and long distances, but also can do so without adding to the existing problem of greenhouse gasses. Evtol will indeed be a heavily used means of travel. But it will take time before such an industry truly see’s to that sci-fi future we envision. As it would need to mirror much of the same numbers as ground based traffic to accommodate the masses. and that means a ton of manufacturing. Also, another key investment point are their points of departure and landing.. Vertiports. micro airports that will service such vehicles. Vertiports are something one can seriously invest in. Its one thing to own a parking lot, its another if that parking lot also accommodates inbound and outbound flights. long story short.. here’s the scenario.. your in Orlando Florida, but want to have a nice lunch on Miami Beach.. you order an Uber to zip you over your local vertiport , booking a flight to miami on your phone. you reach the vertiport and jump on the next flight to Miami south beach, of which the evotl lands directly in south beach at its local vertiport. take a short walk or possible another uber over to your favorite restaurant. Great meal. good chat with friends and in no time your back home with little to no fuss. This is all possible, even today. people do take chartered flights to places all over, but the costs can be high. and if your not going by way of chartered flights out of smaller private airports then your dealing with the crazy major airports and airlines. which is not a fun experience. High speed rail would be interesting, but thus far theirs not so much in term of High-speed at least for those most recent ventures in places like Florida. and so much infrastructure must be build from county to county. the costs of which, not cheap at all. But Evtols eliminates 99% of such infrastruture needs. no rail no roads, Just vertiports. no more bigger than your average parking lot,

    • Tom Wedgwood

      August 1, 2022 at 11:56 am

Beta Technologies have a complete system including vertiports and practical approach to evtol with lift + cruise. Ehang are the clear leaders here with 20,000 test flights done, all autonomous, but I would not count out Beta. Lilium great design and innovation in the electric jets. Joby, Archer, Vertical are much of the same type aircraft.
