I’ve always liked Aubrey Plaza ever since I saw her in a gen-x/slacker movie about time travel. She’s one of these people who has a real talent for deadpan humour. And she’s really attractive. Which helps.

Wait. Can 2 people share the same ethnic percentages in their DNA profile and look that different?

    • rPy9wYVBUEr dopVPoE7BLT

      January 20, 2023 at 6:46 pm

It’s certainly possible. The collection of genes you physically show is called your phenotype but all the genes encoded in your DNA is called your genotype. Everyone has genes in their DNA that they have but don’t physically express. So it is possible for two people with very similar genotypes to look very different since they could physically express different genes.

    • Guilherme Taffarel Bergamin

      January 20, 2023 at 6:52 pm

Basically yes. Kind of like how baldness for instance can skip a generation. You have the gene, but it doesn’t express itself.

    • Jacob Paint

      January 23, 2023 at 7:46 am

I think we all know what she means. Talking about nationality and racial differences can get a little bit confusing though so it would be nice if this absurd language could settle on a broadly understood way of explaining everything… because the confusion does seem to get the better of many people. Americans in particular seem very confused especially when they go to another country and see that blacks, asians, whites, Hispanics have other cultures and don’t adhere to American views regarding race.

  33. Laurent Salomon Originals

    January 21, 2023 at 11:33 pm

Actually, no. You are Spanish if you have Spanish citizenship. 23andme doesn’t issue passports. All it says, is that, out of the few bits of DNA tested, 31% are similar to average Spaniards and Portuguese that 23andme took as reference samples.

    • R

      January 24, 2023 at 3:50 am

this is a dumb take. they are obviously asking about ethnic background rather than citizenship. I am genetically Irish, but I’m american. doesn’t mean that my genes don’t matter. genes can also tell you whether you are prone to alzheimers, sickle cell, etc. good job trying to be a contrarian.

  34. Ansovald

    January 23, 2023 at 12:11 am

34% Iberian does not mean that she is Spanish, but that there is a possibility that she is Portuguese or Spanish.

      A) who cares, nerd? B) if you wanna get technical, which is already annoying af, she could also be Basque, Catalan, Andorran, or Occitan

    • Gerry Tonella

      January 24, 2023 at 11:44 pm

This is true, although I think there is a much higher chance of her Iberian being Spanish since she is half Puerto Rican

    • Ansovald

      January 24, 2023 at 11:46 pm

@David Berger I don’t understand this attitude, was I disrespectful to someone?! I just made an observation and not a criticism. You must be one of those haters who like to cause a fuss on platforms, if you are not a fan of Aubrey, retreat to your insignificance.

    • Isabelle

      January 25, 2023 at 10:54 am

Eh let’s just stick European then since Spanish and Portuguese are both European. So like… 70-80% European. And other stuff but not too much other stuff.

    • Dr. Cornelius Q. Cadbury

      January 25, 2023 at 1:26 pm

Except she’s Puerto Rican. And she has a Spanish surname. So … it’s Spanish.

    • Ansovald

      January 25, 2023 at 1:35 pm

@Dr. Cornelius Q. Cadbury The Portuguese immigrated to Puerto Rico in such large numbers that by the mid 1500s, but I agree she may indeed be of spanish descent, due to her appearance and name.

    • Mr. Joaquin

      January 25, 2023 at 7:22 pm

Given she’s puerto rican and her last name is Plaza with a Z it’s a safe bet to say she’s mostly Spanish

    • olg06

      January 25, 2023 at 9:28 pm

I’m pretty sure she knows her own ancestry, her name is Plaza afterall. Also 23andme does tell you if its Spanish/Portuguese so she knows.

The West African is probably still Spanish, Morocco was controlled as an Iberian state for a long time, so, Aubrey saying she’s West African likely means she’s Moroccan, and in that sense she’s probably not “black” African as she seems to presume lol.

    • olg06

      January 26, 2023 at 8:45 pm

Morocco is North Africa, not West.

    • J.H.R

      January 27, 2023 at 2:12 am

@olg06 I would still consider Nigeria pretty north in Africa to be honest, I think once you get to Cameroon its Central/Western Africa. Nigerians also invaded Iberia at a time which could explain that. I have a friend who is mostly Nigerian in ethnicity but he was surprised to have a large amount of Iberian DNA. It’s most likely the conquests that have taken place between Northwest Africa and Iberia throughout the millennia
