AI is transforming the way we work — could it also reshape what makes us human? In this quick and insightful talk, evolutionary anthropologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy explores how the human brain was shaped by millions of years of shared childcare and mutually supportive communities, asking a provocative question: If robots help raise the next generation, will we lose the empathy that defines us? (Recorded at TED2025 on April 10, 2025)

Remember when ted gave a platform to true big thinkers?

      May 20, 2025 at 1:39 pm

Not really 😂 most of those people were just normal people. Ted is just fun to listen to different perspectives but no backed up data

      May 20, 2025 at 5:06 pm

It didn’t have to be big thinkers.

But it used to be about fantasizing about the future, not the past.

@@niccolomyea when I say big thinkers I mean anyone with an interesting idea. And I think the problem now is the fact that it’s become a platform for people with money to have half though out musings on “what the future could be” instead of something with a real seed of innovation

Some tech bro will make a trillion or so selling “empathy” bots. Worse Amazon will have a free version with limited commercial interuptions.

Are we still mother’s if the babies we give birth too are robots? Do we still have a choice and a soul if you implant the brain and have a program control it? Does that constitute slavery if someone else is controlling you? It’s that the Democratic process of the United States? Who is on this ethics committee and what rights are left for these partial humans and ones that have been completely wired over? What constitutional rights are there for the vounerably exploited? I would like to know where these laws are and become a part of that process that protects my freedom of choice and constitutional rights of others in plain language so there is no room for misunderstanding or misinterpreting!

From $10K to $110K that’s the minimum range of profit return every week I think it’s not a bad one for me, now I have enough to pay bills and take care of my family…

Soooo… I did not believe that 40% of 2-year-olds in America have their own tablet so I looked it up and that is true. Imagine all the ads those babies see before they even go to school.
That’s insane. Why even have children if you are just going to put them in front of a screen? Yes, I know parenting is tough. I raised my children without a partner so I know tough and I understand exhaustion. There’s very little community in the modern world so it’s easy to do the easy thing and allow electronic devices to “raise” your kids. It’s also stupid. I’m glad I raised my kids in the old school style and spent all the time I could with them and limited screen time from all devices.

Different situations of situational awareness. This would be helpful for retirement and nurses in the elderly and helping them out. On top of that you could have individuals like myself were you have a mother who has Ms attacks who loses their ability to move or speak English.l your dad’s basically working all the time. End make it better the my disability doesn’t allow for reading and writing any communication with the mother basically during those MS attacks.
Seriously would have found it super useful to have an AI System when younger.

  16. @TheTuubster

    May 20, 2025 at 3:42 pm

The problem is that people don’t understand the technology, also rooted in using wrong terms and reporting mystifying it. The AI technology currently know is Generative AI. It is not an AI that is sentient or reacts or understands. It is an algorithm transforming information based on statistical models, and as such its results contain statistical errors and flaws. Generative AI generates results that are as reliable as the results from polling institutes. You can NEVER use the results of Generative AI without fail proofing it – doing so would be massively stupid! If you want an AI technology that is without flaws, we have to invent another one. The current one is not it!

    • @blackvulture7999

      May 21, 2025 at 3:35 am

I tell you what. We don’t even need AI as it is so destructive for humanity.

  17. @niccolom

    May 20, 2025 at 5:04 pm

Why are we comparing to apes?
Ape mothers don’t need to work.
And they have a very clear cut male/female roles, which is incompatible with our world.

This TED talk is like those videos that tell young people about floppy disks.

Human life has always changed as time passed. How to raise kids is just one of the things that is going to change in the future.

    No big deal at all.

  20. @bernardodiaz3001

    May 20, 2025 at 6:27 pm

Starting with the title this is completely wrong since current cultural issues related to new generations root cause is lack of quality one-on-one family time raising kids in their primal, and then a false statement about parents being tired but from other than parenting

  21. @scottmichaelharris

    May 20, 2025 at 6:35 pm

Are we farming Human Trauma now?

  22. @Baker6992000

    May 20, 2025 at 7:23 pm

Why only let them help? Just hand them over and tell the Ai to let you know when they’re finally young adults old enough to move out 😂

  23. @DylanAlexander93

    May 20, 2025 at 7:56 pm

Have you seen people? Maybe robots are the answer

  24. @BusinessTacticsDaily

    May 20, 2025 at 9:16 pm

This talk is both fascinating and… a little scary. 🤖👶 If robots raise our kids better than we do, are we still “human” in the traditional sense? But truth is, shared caregiving has always been part of our evolution. The real question isn’t what AI can do — it’s how far we’re willing to let it. Thoughts?

    • @bidossessi

      May 20, 2025 at 10:26 pm

      The answer is 42.
Less facetiously, I’m wondering who the “we” would be. I have zero visibility into my teen kids future.

  25. @willthebeast8002

    May 21, 2025 at 4:54 am

There’s no substitute for a REAL parenting. If you can’t do it hands-on, present and intentionally, don’t have them…

    Society is begging you.

  26. @Raulikien

    May 21, 2025 at 6:24 am

The goal is to replace meaningless labor so we can focus on the human things like this, duh
The sooner you advocate for UBI or a post labor future the better

  27. @Wisso-q4c

    May 21, 2025 at 6:31 am

    • @sleepyaoki

  28. @katie.g.

    May 21, 2025 at 12:29 pm

We don’t want AI assistance, all we want is our HUMAN COMMUNITY back 😭😭😭

  29. @dyVal

    May 21, 2025 at 10:51 pm

Did you think those who raised babies were fully humans too?
Some of those humans raised their babies but onl y to turn them as cash cows, mentally abuse and do violence.

  30. @imp3r1alx

    May 22, 2025 at 4:52 am

It’s all for better or worse and either you like it or not.. tech will move forward with or without you.. it won’t wait for you..
and this does not apply only to parenting robots in the future.. either you adapt or be left behind.. in all sector..
think back on how transportation evolve and how media are shared nowadays compared to 50-60 years ago.. don’t need to go back to the stone age.. just a few decade, doubt our grand grand fathers and mothers imagine the modern world..
