Love the question about how you know which rocks were tools, because that´s something a lot of archaeologists struggle with, in my experience, myself included. I remain firmly convinced that my lovely coworkers dealing with lithics made a deal with the devil to learn how to do it. It´s clearly sorcery^^

Man hearing about mayan sacrifices and how they’re often people captured reminds me of that movie made in 2006, apocalypto. Great movie, IMO. Probably not an accurate representation because its a movie and I don’t want to spoil any of it. Y’all gotta check it out if you get the opportunity, I believe all the cast were native people. If you’re not someone who watches films in other languages and reads subtitles though it might not be for you.

He didn’t really answer the question about Graham Hancock. There has been evidence discovered in Egypt of pottery that dates back thounds of years before what we refer to as ancient Egypt, and these pots/vase have extremely precise cuts made out of a hard material, something that they wouldn’t have been able to do with a hard rock and sharp rock. The mouth of the vase being flat and parallel to the sides to 1/100 of an inch. This feat would be impossible with primitive tools.
I’m not saying it was aliens or some Atlantis type deal, but it is absolutely possible for there to have been a civilization there before hand that was destroyed do to catastrophic events.

And people do engage in debate with Ken Ham, Bill Nye’s debate with him was pretty popular.

He did reply. An “advanced” civilization leaves traces behind, a lot of them.
If these traces aren’t found then the civilization wasn’t very advanced or it wasn’t a civilization at all.

One thing I found fascinating in UCL’s Egyptology museum was Tutankhamun in Arabic was actually pronounced as “Tut-Ankh-Amun”, and then I saw Ankh and it suddenly made a lot more sense than seeing the 11-letter word as a whole

Would have liked a discussion on how archaeology is conducted. Here in the western US, it’s primarily by survey – boots on the ground hiking systematically. I my career, ive only been involved with excavations a couple of times. Out here in the West, survey is the manner with which to find archaeological sites.

Graham Hancock is a journalist who archeologists like this guy feel insecure about because he gets clicks. Your credentials have nothing to do with Graham Hancock – you are looking to score cheap points by bringing up his name only to bash it. Graham Hancock is HELPING archeology by increasing interest – your negative comments reveal your jealousy. Focus on your own endeavors – and meditate on the poor state of archeology if you think someone like Graham Hancock is a “pseudo archeologist” so easily getting more attention.

Graham Hancock didn’t find Gobekli Tepe (archaeologists did) and it is a very cool site, but it’s not more advanced than we thought could exist. Those false claims are pure Graham Hancock, who is a classic pseudoarchaeologist.

real question – how do richard III and the endurance count as archaeology? i thought it was the study of pre-historical (non-written) human societies. both of those are too recent, no? or does wreckage and bones = archaeology?

Doctoral candidate in archaeology here: Archaeologists study all periods of the past! One of my favorite professors, Dr. Jason de Leon, even excavates sites formed by modern immigration across the US-Mexico border. Studying periods for which we have writing can help in a lot of ways: if history is “written by the victors”, archaeology can be one way of trying to understand what the written record might be distorting or leaving out. Plus people didn’t always write about some everyday things that we are curious about now. In terms of Richard III specifically, one example is that we can understand things about his health using modern medicine and testing that people couldn’t have diagnosed in the 1400s.

I would very much love to know how “busy” archaeologists are in what is now the U.S., considering the fact that there was no real Bronze Age, and to a lesser extent Iron Age, not to mention the Middle Ages compared to what was going on in Europe at that time.

This is a more USA version of archaeology, in the UK building projects have to have archaeological surveys and if there is archaeology it is all recorded before it’s destroyed by development. Rescue archaeology it’s called. Also most archaeology, unless it’s prehistoric, in the UK isn’t done with brushes, we used mattocks and trowels as hand tools and even jcbs when needed on big sites

Thanks for making archeology fun, Dr Kinkella! And for not mincing words about Graham Hancock and Ancient Apocalypse – that programme has done incalculable damage to public knowledge, as demonstrated by the fact the commenter said Hancock’s claims are “clearly not” baseless.
Netflix should be held accountable for pushing that truly baseless nonsense. As a historian, every colleague I’ve spoken to about it just sighs with dismay. Real archaeology and history is amazing enough without disinformation like that, and it’s tragic to see how many people gobble it up even “just” as entertainment. Just in my wee corner of the world we have chariots under roundabouts, skeletons in beach dunes, and Iron Age forts slipping off cliffs into the sea – who needs a make-believe “apocalypse”?

Do archaeologists often encounter cultural resistance, and if so how do they negotiate that? My amateur understanding of the archaeology scene here in Alaska is that you’ll upset the indigenous people by coming onto their land without permission or taking artifacts without asking, but they’re not going to protest because what you find might conflict with their internal history.

I’m not a big fan of Graham Hancock or anything, but I do find it interesting that when this guy was asked why Hancock’s claims are “baseless”, he doesn’t actually give any reasoning as to why. All he said about the map is, “it’s not real evidence”, but then doesn’t actually explain why that’s the case. I’m very ignorant to this topic so I’m not saying who’s right or wrong I’m just curious.

The issue with discrediting the theory of a super advanced society is that you just sound like all the people the theory is working against, so you just sound like the ‘liars’ in the theory. To be heard, you have to approach it with the implication that it is possible. Discrediting a map by saying they just ran out of paper is as silly as saying it must be Antarctica.

Okay, how about I discredit the Piri Reis map by talking about all the fake, fanciful creatures on it that never existed. Also, I don’t win or lose anything based on whatever theory is best. I simply use scientific evidence to explain the past instead of baseless nonsense.

The thing he missed about Carbon 14 is that living organisms will replenish the carbon 14 ratio through breathing, so the decay rate really only starts when an organism dies.

I went to film school in the mid-80s in SoCal… but the best class I took was during the “interterm” in January… archaeology. We spent the month digging out part of Mission San Juan Capistrano. The fact that my roommate and I both took it and were both film majors… and I went into film because I fell in love with Raiders of the Lost Ark when it came out (I was 13)… well that class made all my dreams come true! I actually loved it, found one of the oldest stone tools at the site (we were digging in the trash pit basically)… but we got reallllly tired of bagging and cataloguing bits of charcoal! Part of me wishes I’d pursued archaeology… loved listening to this guy talk about the profession.

Genuinely disappointed that there are people like this teaching at high levels in our world. 100 points for passion, zero for academic rigour and scientific thought. A truly deadly combination. Geneuinely no longer feel as much regret for not having gone into this awesome field.

Dude lost me trying to discredit Graham Hancock, especially by somehow thinking the Piri Reis map somehow proves him wrong and that there is not geologic evidence. Gobekli Tepe is proof that human civilizations were more advanced than simple hunter gatherers that mainstream archaeology has tried to shove down our throats all these years.
