This video was re-uploaded to fix a title card that incorrectly said “2011” rather than “2021.” Sorry for any confusion.

It’s funny how he contradicted himself saying something like “I’m not a fan of cellular on iPads because I don’t want to pay the fee” but then states “it’s weird how MacBooks don’t have cellular”. You can also just tether your MacBook to your iPhone.

    • Anthony Sun

      May 19, 2021 at 10:33 pm

It’s not really contradicting. One is personal preference. The other is talking about how Apple tends to skip things that can be done with ease. 😀

Apple is deliberately ruining the Pro. It’s literally the best Apple product if unleashed to Pro apps and Pro browsers. If no MacOS for the M1 better off with the 2018 Pro

The problem with software is only partly an Apple problem. Yes, they need to make Files better and release their Pro apps suite. The App Store can be unnecessarily restrictive (why can’t I run Steam on my iPad Pro?) What really needs to happen is for third party devs to start taking the iPad seriously. We need the desktop version of MS Office. We need games to support mouse and keyboard input. Since that’s not happening, we need Apple to allow us to start installing Mac apps on the iPad; iPadOS should be a touch friendly version of MacOS rather than a slightly more capable version of iOS.

I don’t understand but this whole turning in iPad into a computer thing. I think if Apple did then it might mess up their MacBook lineup, and if you want a full blown computer then you can purchase a Microsoft surface product. Maybe I don’t fully understand it but it’s just it’s getting a little weird. At the end of the day it’s a tablet so maybe it needs to be clarified why it needs to be. There are already wireless printers and you can already hook up a mouse to it. On the Samsung S7 tablet, it has built-in Samsung Dex and you can hook up a keyboard to it and you can hook up a mouse and keyboard to it as well. Maybe someone could clarify better but it’s just it feels like to me and no one has really clarified it very well.

  14. rubenrar1

    May 19, 2021 at 7:24 pm

I mean the iPad is technically lighter but the MacBook is also cheaper, if you really need a computer then I would just go with a macbook and call it a day, it may not be as light as a tablet but at least you have a computer, but I don’t know what to think about turning an iPad into a computer.

  15. rubenrar1

    May 19, 2021 at 7:28 pm

Maybe because each brand has their own ecosystem of products, it has made technology more incompatible than ever before, if you’re with apple then you want the privacy and the software optimization in the power that goes along with it but then if you buy a non-apple product then it will affect how your other products function too, for example if you have an iPhone then you can’t buy a Microsoft surface product, the more I think about this the more it makes my head dizzy, I miss the 90s when technology was more simple you didn’t have to worry about no stupid ecosystem lol.

I’m already calling it there will be no macOS or any iteration of it on iPad. This is just one of those things where apple was just like hey lets just put M1 in everything just because we can.

So here where your review falls short of answering a very vital query I have. With that thunderbolt connection and that SSD drive shown in the video. Can you work directly off of the SSD drive without having to upload it prior to accessing it to work on it. Majority of what you discussed was already mention in the Apple spring event. Since you’re not a artist again makes this review lacking in the information I wanted to know. You have to know enough about Apple by putting in an M1 chip states the pro apps are on the way. There should be no doubt about that being the future of this device. I’m sure every artist is making this a must buy even without those apps being currently available. Think of that baseball movie adage. Built and they will come. There’s no difference here for the M1 iPad Pro now that it is a real. I’ve been an avid iPad fan since day one one the first Gen.. My PC laptops and desktops all sit gathering dust and unopened in some cases sine the iPad Pro models arrived. There been no question or doubt in that decision. However it was not a conscious one, but one where I gravitated to in my everyday work flow.

Thank you I just cancelled my order. I’ll stick with my 2018 version for another year.

Samsung has a special on the Z fold 2 with $100 for the tab s7+ so I’m going to get those to play with for awhile.

    May 20, 2021 at 12:33 am

Yes the iPad Pro hardware is just absolutely insanely awesome. And then it hits you that iPadOS will never allow you to get the most of the hardware. Its like buying Fugaku, the 442 petaflop monster Japanese supercomputer and loading windows 95 on it.

Sadly iPadOS is still a glorified mobile OS and already held back the previous iPad Pro. With this new iPad Pro that gap between Pro hardware and the mobile OS will become even more pronounced. Despite Apple’s marketing we all know iPadOS just doesn’t allow the iPad Pro to be your only “Computer”, not for Professional people anyway. And yet tech reviewers get excited when we get widgets and new emoticons. Really?

I really hope now that Mac and iPad is running M1 we will get a Pro OS for iPad Pro, some kind of merge between iPadOS and MacOS to really take advantage of that amazing hardware.

To me simple things that are still missing

    1. Multi User support like MacOS, Windows, Linux, Unix, Android has had for ages.
    2. External screen output at native external screen resolution and not just screen mirror but a proper second screen
    3. Keep working on improving file manager at least offering ability to format external storage with different filesystems and better file copy status indicator especially over network.
    4. Support more filesystems for external storage
    5. Consolidate all settings for keyboard, mouse, pen in one menu option rather than scattered everywhere
    6. On the topic of mouse and keyboard the use of it can still be improved, mouse input using web office productivity apps on Safari is still flakey for both O365 and Google Docs.
    7. Need a App tray like iOS just got or MacOS, Android has had for many years. I really really don’t need all my damn apps on my desktop like I’m a toddler
    8. Ability to place widgets anywhere allowing me to have a clean clutter free desktop
    9. Full on MacOS Safari and Chrome from the Mac. Not glorified desktop like mobile versions. Online design services like Marvel Apps or even AWS consoles work well on desktop but simply does not work well on iPad. Heck some online services like Sendgrid, the console just crashes on login.
    10. Perhaps a bit more freedom to sideload apps. Really frustrating that apps like Synology DSGet is not allowed on iOS. (I know this will ever happen)
    11. Hopefully all that Mac Silicone productivity/pro apps make their way to iPad too like full MS Office rather than the current gimped mobile version, Flutter, final cut, Adobe suite

Sadly, its clear Apple still think of the iPad as a large iPhone/Toy/Consumption device

I am hoping they will draw a line though the iPad family where the Pro line actually gets a more Pro OS and the regular iPads that are more geared towards consumption, running the mobile OS aka iPadOS

I have had an iPad Pro since they were first introduced back in 2015 and over the last few years use more and more, and the Mac less and less – so 98% of my work and leisure use is now iPad Pro (I will never buy another Mac). I am awaiting the top of the line 2021 12.9” mostly for that new screen for video/photo editing and movie consumption

i notice the xdr tech most with movies and videos that have black bars on top and bottom (or sides). on every other ipad it looks very grey but on the new pro 12.9 its way more black like an oled. also when watching very dark scenes or gameplay it clears up the image and looks way less washed out. A really great improvement!

This feature of the M1 iPad Pro is very underrated and that is the ‘Charger comes with the box’
I mean that’s innovation in actual user’s eyes.
Jokes aside, the M1 iPad Pro is very great but is it actually replaceable with the MacBook Pro 16″ (2020) I’m using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ (Yes, I’m in the Samsung ecosystem so I can’t just that easily switch to the M1 iPad) and a MacBook Pro 16″. Should I actually replace my Galaxy Tab S7+ and the MacBook Pro 16″ with the M1 iPad Pro, is it really worth it?

    • Bully Maguire

      May 21, 2021 at 4:43 am

Wait till WWDC. If iPadOS gets MacOS or MacOS apps then it’ll be worth getting.

    • PSYCHO

      May 21, 2021 at 4:54 am

For picture quality and aspect ratio, Galaxy Tab S7+ wins hands down. Zero competition.

However, if you require an exclusive app for iPadOS then obviously you should buy the iPad Pro.

Regardless, for 95% of people the iPad Pro is nothing more than a media consumption device.

    • Bully Maguire

      May 21, 2021 at 4:59 am

@PSYCHO honestly, I think for media consumption, the 2021 Pro would win just because it’s brightness is much higher and is able to display proper HDR content.
For digital art, I’d say the Pro because it has procreate and in general better apps for it but if ProCreate is on the S7+ then it’s a toss up. Or maybe I’ll give the win to the S7+ as the SPen is so much thinner and makes it a better experience.
As for everything else, I’d no doubt prefer the 2021 Pro.

But you’re right, for most people it’s a media consumption device.

    • PSYCHO

      May 21, 2021 at 5:22 am

@Bully Maguire The thing about HDR is that it’s not solely about peak brightness.

What OLED lacks in peak brightness, it makes up for with contrast ratio, black levels, and response time.

Once I experienced OLED, I could never go back to LCD for gaming, media content consumption, etc.

The real question is why do Samsung tablets and laptops from any manufacturer that use Samsung AMOLED panels NOT have the same high-end AMOLED panels in the Note 20 Ultra or S21 Ultra which can both do 1,600 nits of peak brightness? 🤔

    • Bully Maguire

      May 21, 2021 at 6:13 am

@PSYCHO I think it’s the issue with Oleds. Possibly, there was too much heat produced or here was some sort of burn in issue.

But yeah, the Note 20U & S21U screen is just a whole another level.

I’m pretty sure these new iPad’s will support Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X and Xcode. And, of course, i’m not sure but since there is already some version of Adobe Photoshop on the iPad, i’m pretty sure that either Adobe will be present and say: “With the M1 chip on the iPad Pro, we now are able to put the full version onto the iPad pro”. Or something among those lines. Remember: Apple said that something in an interview about if the hardware isn’t there, the software can’t be either. And that the lack of enough RAM on the iPads was a limitation to put their pro apps on there. Well, guess what? Now we have both! So i’m pretty sure that this will get announced on WWDC. It’s not coincidence that these iPads come out around WWDC. Believe me. And yeah they could’ve announced or released the iPads on or after WWDC. But maybe they have some other hardware to announce and the event would be too long or too full with hardware. So again, we’ll see!

@PSYCHO I don’t do any media work, just class assessments and watch movies. Does it really make a difference to have that 12.9 size display? Even from 9.7 inch iPad Pro to 11inch iPad Pro is a big difference to me but not sure if I should get the 12.9 or 11 inch

    • PSYCHO

      May 21, 2021 at 5:51 am

@Dunston Diaz Just go to the Apple store and judge it for yourself. Only you can determine if a 12.9-inch tablet is too big or not.

Do you travel a lot with your tablet? Do you watch lots of movies or TV shows on your tablet AND if so, do they support HDR? Do you even care about HDR? If your answer is YES regarding HDR then you should get the 12.9-inch model because of that Mini LED display which will offer better picture quality (compared to your current iPad Pro) for watching HDR movies.

CAUTION: The Mini LED panel uses Full Array Local Dimming. If you read E-books in dark mode, you will notice blooming around white text against the black background. That might bother you. That’s one noticeable downside to this new Mini LED iPad Pro.

Great review I love Apple, have every product. I’m going to buy through my job that gives employees a great discount and give my iPad Pro to my grandson. I barely use my MAC or IPhone love IPad better.

If iPad can’t run Full Desktop Apps it’s not worth the price 😎
It’s your money, flush it wherever you want.

Mini LED vs true OLED??? On the 12.9″ iPad Pro w mini LED screen, if the entire screen is black with a single white pixel, does the single white pixel have a halo or blur around it because the mini LED lit under it is bigger than the single white pixel? Can you tell how big is a single mini LED lit compared to the entire screen? compared to the single pixel? How does the mini LED screen compare to a true OLED screen (compare a Samsung OLED tablet to the mini LED screen iPad).
