I remember the city of San Francisco banning Google Glass wearing users in a number of locations, including bars, restaurants, government locations, theatres, as well as number of other locations where Google Glasses were banned. So is the same thing going to happen for Apple’s Vision Pro headset? They showed a person on a plane wearing this Vision Pro headset. Talk about a creepy person wearing a 3D recording device on their head, especially on a plane, or any crowded location. I also remember some Google Glass users getting their glasses knocked off of their heads from some of the public. If Google didn’t get a pass in many public settings, then Apple needs to see the same bans in public as well.

@Sean Godsell personally I will only wear it at home, because who wears a goggle in public? And besides, it seems to obstruct the view a little bit, so I feel unsafe if I wear it on the street and cross the road

This review is cringe. Her perspective seems stuck in past norms. I’m pretty sure at some point wearing headphones on your head seemed “cringe.” The idea that something new looks “weird” today is not a good one. That’s just a norm. Her partner at CNET (I don’t remember his name) gave far more objective insights.

good & bad: Personally speaking, there’s only one true benefit in buying the AppleVision Pro, and honestly, that’s for first-time buyers such as first-time bachelors, first-time apartment owners, first-time technology users, and first-time entertainment users. When you think about it from an economic perspective, the AppleVision Pro would be absolutely fantastic, especially if it supported certain entertainment features and could be used as a cell phone without the need to purchase a separate device. Just imagine, as a very first-time bachelor with no other hardware except a mattress and a microwave, the AppleVision Pro would be an appealing offer, especially if it supported streaming applications, games, and various social media platforms like Plex, Nvidia GameStream, Steam Link, and more. With the AppleVision Pro, you would have an unlimited-size media screen, multichannel audio, and potentially unlimited gameplay, movies, TV shows, music, and online media. Moreover, if it could support experiences like going to a theme park without actually going there, or provide an AR/VR/XR experience like VR Chat, it would be an absolutely amazing device. You could potentially have unlimited gaming and media watching experiences, and if it also had the ability to take cell phone calls, it would truly be the ultimate all-in-one device.
Unfortunately, even at the bare minimum cost, the standalone items listed below would collectively cost much more than the AppleVision Pro, ranging anywhere between $3000 and $5000 for all the basics:
01. Audible verbal communication tool aka phone: $600
02. 4K Smart TV: $500
03. Video camera (bonus 3-D): $200
04. Photo camera (bonus 3-D): $500
05. Media center with surround sound audio: $300
06. Gaming platform: $500
07. Full-blown computer: $1600
08. Decent VR rig: $600
In conclusion, the AppleVision Pro offers an appealing proposition for first-time buyers, providing a comprehensive set of features and capabilities at a relatively affordable price compared to purchasing individual standalone devices.
Secondary conclusion:
However, if you are already a member of the “first-time club” and already own the majority of these devices at any level, investing in the AppleVision Pro would be redundant and unnecessary. In such cases, purchasing this extraordinary device would result in throwing your money away on a product that offers three times the value in hardware alone. It would be more cost-effective to stick with your existing devices and make the most out of them rather than investing in the AppleVision Pro.

The killer application for those glasses is easy to see. It’s a virtual wife, of course. It would be wonderful to live with my own Bridget Carey. And such a virtual wife would be much cheaper. Or so I think. Of course, you would have to dress and decorate her/it(?) like the real thing from the Apple Store. Fifty-sixty.

This is an excellent objective, realistic look at future possibilities. The reason that FACETIME looks weird is because the micro-expressions are lost. 90% of communication is body language. Compare your own expressions in this video with the same done with FACETIME. You will note the difference.

With the reported price, I’m not sure too many everyday people will have these. Yes there will be early adopters, but not many regular people will be able to afford them. Also, if you think Apple’s going to lower the price anytime soon, think again. Apple is the poster child of over pricing everything it sells. Over $1000 for a cell phone, $2000 for a laptop, $4000 for a desktop computer, what do you think will happen to these things after a few years. Not a chance will these be affordable to the general public.

My son has an IPAD he uses to communicate. He’s non verbal and autistic and apple refuses to help for 13 days and there is no escalation path other than contacting every advocacy group etc to get a resolution…. I miss mr jobs, Apple is crap now and actually a harmful evil company

I think we are getting too hung up on precise use cases displayed by Apple. like for example thinking of it as something with the spreadsheets is a little limiting. I edit videos and motion graphics. I will really love to have multiple screens to view and edit designs you can travel to an Airbnb halfway across the world and still be able to plug into your virtual multiple screens. that is a big plus. and for the 3D video, the example with the kids is just an example of a 3D video. think of how travel bloggers can document in 3D so that you can see Bali accurately from your living room. But I totally get what your point is. its the closest we have to future tech, for now, just see at as the iPad 1 and these comments are probable future updates.

As someone who works form home and doesn’t see much of colleagues, I can see this taking conference calls to another dimension. If my colleagues are also earing such a headset and we’re in a virtual office space, we can sit at our virtual desk and see and hear what others are up to.
Take this to a personal level, watching a movie at home, I can sit in my living room and watch the same movie on the same screen as family on the other side of the world. In a virtual living room we can watch the movie – or the football game – as though we’re in the same room.
I would agree though, kids need to see their parents faces. covering the face is a bad idea. Seeing parents engrossed in their phone when they should be engaging with their kids is not a good look.
And how do we keep track of a teen in a virtual headset? When it’s common place for parents, it’s a natural progression for kids / teens to learn the skill. With a phone, it’s easy enough to see what’s on the screen. No so easy on a headset.

It’s seems that the vision pro could replace your TV or all TVs in the house (if longer battery life and lighter for full time use). And productivity looks amazing with Mac. Unfortunately life is a lot more than work and play. One aspect of many, is the social. Those floaty eyes and realistic FaceTime avatars is cringe on the social aspect. They need to revolutionize AirPlay for this to incorporate shared experiences. Natural Shared experiences is what is severely lacking in VR industry. Next year they have to come hard with vision os SharePlay next year.

Bridget, seriously? Was this click bait?….I’d expect more insight from you about the long term prospects not just the short term impact….I think you are being wayyyy too harsh by emphasizing dystopian so much. Apple is clearly innovating here – in 1984 we got GUI and Mouse interface through the intro of Macintosh which within 5-6 years become mainstream with Windows 95. Now EVERYONE in the world uses it. Spatial computing is a not just a revolutionary step, but rather an evolutionary step, and this is just V1. In fact, its a really polished V1 from nearly every reviewer that I’ve seen that has tried it (and there are many). I wouldn’t suggest seeing this as a replacement for all day use, or mobile (not at home) use, but I could easily see this replacing IPAD (for example) as the main consumption device at home. I don’t think that is far fetched. Also Apple is playing smart by opening up its own App ecosystem of 2D apps that are useable in a spatial environment quite nicely. But the real power will be short-burst 3D immersive experiences that will harness the power and provide all kinds of consumer and business with great use cases. Also ,why are you so annoyed by the dad shooting a 3D movie? Like you said, it could easily be used for special occasions – wouldn’t it be NICE to bring 3D video experiences to the consumer level. I could see lots of examples of shooting my dog or other situations in 3D that would be awesome to watch in the future in a big spatial wide screen. Ultimately, its up to us to let tech rule our life or keep life in balance. But just pushing back on innovation for fear of a dystopic future or the unknown is crazy. Let me summarize. Anytime there is a disruption in tech, many pessimists (generally older) tend to find reasons to be haters. History has shown this in my lifetime, e.g. there have always been many nay-sayers of disruption with BluRay DVD, streaming- music services (e.g. Napster), wearables (smartwatches), touch based interfaces, home based AI (Siri and Amazon Echo), and so much more. Yet most end up finding great scenarios for use and become mainstream over time. This is a moment to embrace the new tech and look forward with optimism on the possibilities. Otherwise, you’d be stuck reviewing newer emojis on IPhone or something that has no significant impact on our future. Lastly, it ISN’T natural to type looking at a physical piece of glass (on our desk). Spatial is the future. This is V1. Thank you Apple for going BIG – we need more innovators and less nay-sayers and pessimists that always find why things will not work. Embrace innovation and disruption- always. Expect long long lines for this product. One more point. Though there was nothing in-factual about what you shared, I just felt your entire sarcastic tone was filled with negativity and pessimism. There are so many positives from innovation to enhance our well being, embrace those , don’t’ fear change, and its on you to keep your life in balance. Just as an FYI, I have my own California tech company and have represented all kinds of disruptive tech from the Silicon Valley for 25+ years now.

I think this video is cringe unless it’s all a big joke. Feels like whoever wrote this script didn’t even understand how the device works, “you can do work in the device with tiny little words”? You know you can resize the apps however you want and that there are virtual keyboards for you to use or bluetooth keyboard and mouse that you can connect with the device.
If Apple really wanted to push this tech to the limit, it can easily replace your phone, computer, tv & cinema experience. The use cases they showed off proves this. The only thing holding this back is the limited battery life, need for external battery pack & the “uncool” design.
Even the price tag is not too much considering all of the tech that’s being packed into this thing.

There are minor cringe things with this headset but this review is more cringe than anything. Sorry but being overtly negative is cringe. This is a preview and most likely not last press release, so I’m sure more will come out and maybe some changes. So some of your gripes might already have answers to before release. Like putting it on to take video. I want to assume you can use your phone and review later on headset. I think it’s a given to take pics and videos natively because of the cameras. Most cameras already have the ability to take 3D content….. As far as killer apps, they’re coming. That’s why the announcement is so early. They’re still working on it’s content. I’m not a developer but I have ideas that I did not see at WWDC, but utilizing that hardware makes my imagination run wild. I’m sure there are like minded developers who will go crazy with this. In short wait till late this year or early next……. I promise you the apps to come will be game and life changing.

It certainly something to get used to, but I do think it will push the world towards a more immersive computer environment. Very interesting that the execs did not wear the device,; most likely needs to be in an extremely controlled environment; they have nearly a year to iron things out. Price is the limiting factor for large scale uptake, but do not think that is an issue as Apple do not seem to want to deploys massive numbers. Can’t wait to see them in the stores!

Alright, I gotta give it to Apple though. When I first tried the Oculus when it came out, and I stepped into a new world. This technology can be great, but its a tool and it seems like the software/hardware mix isn’t working. They’re pushing the boundry though.

Such a perfect video pointing out everything I thought about this thing. Let me also point this out you can already get a headset with decent displays that basically does all this for 1000$ call the quest pro. If you wait a bit you can get the quest 3 that will do most of this for 500$. By the way their target launch date is 2024 by then we will have other 4K headsets ( I am sure ) for less than 3500 dollars. If you just want amazing displays for movies and immersive games the bigscreen beyond is coming in 2023 for 1000$ and it will have an interface molded to a scan of your face and is the lightest headset ever made. So there are just so many compelling options on the market for under 3500$ that have all the basic features and usecases that make sense.

Make fun of this technology at your own risk of looking silly in the near future. Apple just changed the world again, and I’m surprised by how many people don’t yet see that. Virtual reality, until just a few days ago, was a hope and a dream. It now officially exists. All other devices until now only scratched at what could be. These are the first few days of THE actual alternate reality wherein there are no limits to what we can (virtually) do. This was just put into the hands of software developers who, as of just a couple of days ago, began to build the virtual world that you and I and everyone can visit very soon. To balk at the limitations of this first device in terms of size and weight and so forth is no different than those who laughed at the idea of the everyday person needing a personal computer. What it can do already is astonishing. Imagine what it will look like and what it will be able to do in five or ten years. Believe me, the tech world is already imagining that. And as far as the price tag? It’s a bargain. People buy 80-inch TVs for that price, and those are just TVs! Everything is different as of right now. Accept it. Get used to it. And let’s do our best no to abuse it.

You asked for comments .. Consider the lock-in when Apple adds a fourth camera to the iPhone 16 Pro, further down the body of the phone, an eyespan away from the main camera, so all those moments can be captured without cringe in landscape mode on the phone you would normally use to capture them anyway. Of course you couldn’t play them back unless you bought a Vision headset.

This is a great review! completely agree.
Another isolation device. I kind of hate how we have to use our phones to do EVERYTHING and miss the good all days when there was a specific machine for every different thing. Now they have put this on our faces, the only remaining place we had to be spontaneous and direct with another person.
Also, I am wondering what is the effect of focusing all the time on a single point, instead of using your eyes to change deep of field. Our eyes are tiered of screens apple!

The Vision Pro is go to be like all the other Apple products it will have its like and dislikes, just like the AirPods with its antennas looked weird at first, but you walk down the road and you just can’t help seeing everyone with one in there ears. When the VP launches it will take about two Years or so to iron out, just like all the rest of Apple devices. But as you said apple is good at ducking and diving until they sort thing out. But the must important thing is they sort it out. 😊

Despite the cringe moments, which will come from any attempt to use VR/AR in everyday life, I’d much rather have Apple lead the way than Facebook.

I don’t think this is a consumer device at the moment.
In my view, with the device, what can I do in a 3D space/desktop, that I currently can’t do on a normal computer screen/keyboard/mouse?

I’m sorry, you can go on and on about how “Creepy” it is for dads to strap on the headset to record something that is happening. We have been doing this for YEARS! my grandfather had a VHS camera he recorded family events year after year. We now enjoy looking at those to relive the birthday parties and Christmas mornings years later. This is the same thing, just more high-tech, but allowing far more emersion into the event later. The eyes look a little creepy, but they will allow people to “look you in the eye” while they talk to you with it on. Don’t spread fear about it. your going way overboard with the fear factor. It’s new. it will evolve. it will improve. and in the end give us new ways to interact, and participate with friends and family across long distances with live streaming of 3d events when you cannot be there. Society will help guide the product.

It is easy to trash new technology. EASY. I watched the Apple WWDC rollout and as an early adopter and a user of apple tech, I was shocked beyond words at the quality of the product and it’s capabilities.
I generally love CNET reviews but this one was over-the-top negative. She picked apart almost every single aspect of some amazing new tech. She sounded EXACTLY like MSFT CEO Steve Ballmer when he offered his comments on the new iPhone back in 2009 along many others. Tech CEOs from across the world lined up to offer comments they now CRINGE about each time they are reminded of them. For a full year before an after Apple announced the IPhone, they were derided for making a cringe-worthy phone. The tech media went along and loved to publish any article trashing apple. And later they all cringed as they realized the world-changing effect the IPhone would have. And CNET will be cringing, too.
I cringed at the price but will be at my Apple Store to buy one within days of the announcement but the rest of the WWDC announcement was surreal, not cringeworthy.

Your points are valid, however, the attitude of this video shows a lack of understanding with VR. This headset is brand new, a new OS, and a year out. This was a showcase of the technology, which if you are familiar with the VR industry, is now the most capable and high tech. Most of the apps, games, and tools available in VR aren’t made by those who make the hardware. Getting this headset out, with all of its capabilities, will allow developers to make some outstanding content, not to mention what this tech will do for other future apple devices. By the time this gets into everyday consumers’ hands, there will likely be much more available on/with it, as well as likely other models and price points, as well as the tech integrating into the other products. Let’s not forget the lag time of revolutionary technology. Computers and phones didn’t become the norm in a single year, I expect the results of this wont fully be realized until years down the road. And if anyone standardizes new tech, it will be Apple.

You’re being critical about this from a very personal pov. There are a lot of people out there who enjoys being immersed in their personal space. Alone. Though gimmicky, I think a lot of people would also like to work with virtual screens. At this price point, its hard to see families buying multiple headsets for everyone in the Family, so wearing one headset while playing your kids may seem off, but i think if the price gets more accessible—less pro—I can totally see people putting on their individual pairs of headsets and enjoy playing in virtual world together. Many people are already playing together virtually online. I don’t think its all that cringe at all.
