I’m struggling to make much of a list of things that my iPad Pro (2018) can’t handle… especially w/my Magic Keyboard. All your “office” applications are there and work well. The “full” version of Photoshop is finally available though it still doesn’t have some functionality added and isn’t great with mouse support YET. Video editing is a decent experience once you get used to it on a LumaFusion/Adobe Rush or a similar app – and word has it that Final Cut Pro is coming to iPadOS soon! The browser is a FULL browser and file management has become pretty good compared to what it once was. 👍🏼

Not a full browser. Apple says “desktop class” because it loads the desktop version of websites. But it’s still a mobile browser. Tabs are not kept in memory, there are no real extensions, no dev tools. Alas, no software development at all on the iPad. No 3D modeling, animation, VFX, video compositing, game development, no engineering software, very limited architectural software, no CAD, no CAM, no statistics, data analysis, mathematics software… There is barely any industrial software available for the iPad. Even consumer things like drone software packages and 3d printing software are missing. Not trying to burst your bubble, the iPad is fantastic for home, study and light office use. But there is an enormous list of things that the iPad can’t do.

This is a really good overview of the issue with ipad pro in general. Bought an ipad gen 6 128gb for $300 last year. Using an older Apple bluetooth keyboard I’ve had for years with it and attached a $20 Speck case that allows a bunch of angles. The ipad pro is great, but it’s not $800 plus another $200-300 great. Like many things Apple, it’s a poor value. You have to just want it to rationalize it, because looking at the numbers, it makes no sense. I’m a business user, so email, texting, some apps, etc. work great on the regular ipad. I guess if you’re running Adobe or FCP and you need the horsepower of the pro, then you can make the business case for it, but short of that, I don’t see it.

I would love to know why Logitech’s keyboard case for the iPad Pro doesn’t have a trackpad, but it costs just north of what their version for the non pro iPads costs.

I was just thinking the same. I watched the iPhone SE vs. Galaxy A51 camera comparison
earlier this morning and after watching that and this video, I realized the CNET Apple comparison reviews follow the same script. It goes like this: The Apple device has this good feature and this good feature and it’s also the most expensive option. The competitor’s device has 10 great features and cost much less. I know this comes down to personal preference, but if I had to make a recommendation, I would get the Apple device even though most of you can’t afford it and it doesn’t meet all my requirements, but the luxury feel is worth it.

Already have the folio case and so splashed out on the Magic Trackpad 2 to go with it. Half the price of the Magic keyboard case and much larger trackpad area compared to the one on the case.

I bought my 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 (256GB + cellular) from B&H for $570 last year. This keyboard is more than half the price. Definitely not worth the money. I will rather just buy a third party keyboard. That keyboard is a waste of time and money Apple.

claire rose From what I heard, the trackpad is laggy and the hinges might damage your iPad. The rubber in those hinges eventually slips out and the keyboard sometimes lags. You have to hit dead center for it to register. Ive never had this keyboard myself but this is what I heard from commenters and reviewers. Im also struggling to choose a keyboard for my iPad😂 Hope this helps and stay safe!😁

      April 29, 2020 at 10:06 pm

claire rose – Don’t listen to either of these two Claire. Coming from someone who has actually had original Brydge Pro for over a year now, my iPad is absolutely fine with zero dents or bends. The rubber shims are a snug fit, they have to be to secure the tablet, and there isn’t even as much as a scratch from taking the iPad in and out from the keyboard. You just have to get it right and you’re fine. I love my “garbage” Brydge so much that I preordered the Brydge Pro + which has just been shipped and the company are fully aware that they can improve the trackpad and included a message in my shipping email mentioning that they are releasing their own iPadOS app in the next few weeks which will be able to provide firmware updates to the keyboard so the trackpad issues will be software fixed. Don’t let two people who haven’t even held the product in their own hands sway your opinion because it is a really well built product. Oh and it has function keys, how Apple thought they could rip people off with their Magic keyboard and not include these keys is baffling. Have a good day!

I have an IPad Air 3 with Logitech’s Combo Touch keyboard. This keyboard is fantastic and works very well. Working with Apple on this (including its hardware and software bits) makes this a great alternative to anything one the market for this device.

Hi. Thank you for videos. Been wondering about the bridge. Need your help. My onscreen keyboard , the one from Apple with the microphone in the left corner, does not come up when I have my apple magic keyboard attached. I tried using the globe to get the keyboard up but that did not work. Also cut in completely off and back on. The emoji keyboard comes up but not the others with the microphone. One other question I hope you can help me with… I have looked everywhere but no dice – when I talk in certain apps the microphone is not picking up. Videos have voice but in some apps it will not record my voice even though I have given it permission. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you again for all of your videos and hard work! : )

      May 2, 2020 at 11:50 pm

In order to get the software keyboard to appear, tap the down arrow on the Magic Keyboard, then hold the down arrow on-screen found on the bottom right. This will bring up the software keyboard 🙂
For the mic issues it may be hardware related, but I’d probably try the usual battery of hard resetting the iPad, then erasing it and restoring as a backup if that doesn’t work. If it’s only certain apps most likely a hard reset will do the trick. Press these buttons one after the other: Volume up, then volume down, then HOLD the power button by itself until the Apple logo appears.

0:25 doesn’t really turn it into a laptop, it just makes typing on the iPad a lot easier, more convenient.

you have this feeling, that tablet computers (especially the iPad) are longing for the day when everyone is going to see them for what they are, ‘tablet computers’ (not, laptop wannabe) and treat them accordingly.

  25. CNET

I returned the 11” Apple Magic KB for iPad Pro bc the trackpad is too small, it’s too heavy, and no function keys. If it improved on one of those points I would have kept it.

    • Jack Soan

      May 3, 2020 at 1:20 am

I had the same problems. the function key is still a downer, but the trackpad worked incredibly well once i played around with the trackpad settings. The heft is a given if you dont want a back stand to hold it on your lap. I find that the weight is easy to adjust to.

  31. Michael Fox

    April 30, 2020 at 2:14 pm

The big problem to me with the Magic Keyboard is the added weight. In the end, you end up with a device weighing as much as a laptop, so no extra portability. I’m not sure about the other two devices, but both look heavy as well. That’s the nice thing about the smart keyboard – much lighter, but less functional with no trackpad. I wonder if there isn’t a better solution out there – a portable bluetooth keyboard with a trackpad?

    • Mark Kendrick

Eggamyer I’ve been using mine for a couple of days and it’s exactly what I needed. Having a trackpad really makes things more efficient and since I don’t have to use my fingers on the screen it has fewer smudges.

  36. charles potts

    April 30, 2020 at 9:35 pm

I think We’ve sort gone off a bit in thinking of the Ipad versus laptop, personally i feel an Ipad should be an “Ipad” if i want a laptop i would go buy an Apple or Windows laptop, there’s plenty available that are Super thin & light, to not have to compromise to the ecosystem of ios or any other ecosystem, i just feel everyone needs to put things into perspective, now if you have the money to “burn” then this $300.00 dollar keyboard makes plenty of sense, but all this effort to turn an ipad into a laptop when macbooks & window laptops are plenty available is really a “mute” point to me & unnecessary…But don’t get me wrong the magic keyboard is seems to be really neat & cool to have..

  37. Richard Barnes

    April 30, 2020 at 10:52 pm

You look at the camera to make eye contact? What drugs you taking? You look at the screen because that’s where the person you are talking to actually appears. You know this, right? Are they gonna appear in the camera? 😂😂🙄🤔🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

  42. Average Joe

I wish Logitech or Kensington would release a reasonable version of the keyboard, because based on their original cases. I have spend almost $2000 on this iPad Pro, 11 inch, 2020 model. I really, really, really, want some sort of affordable combo to work for this device.

The magic keyboard with iPad pro just looks sexy. I like Brydge but when you are already going in with $200, you lose smart connection for instant no lag connection with no charging or batteries. You miss out on having a charging stand for your iPad, and miss out on being able to quickly removing and attaching the iPad via the magnets. You lose an extra charging port. There is a lot to lose out on by going the less expensive route.

I just received my Brydge Pro + Keyboard w/ Trackpad and it’s a Game Changer. The fit and finish is unreal, The typing experience is Great, The Look when folded is actually like a laptop, The Keyboard backlight three levels and length of light is now perfect. Using the trackpad feels pretty much like a laptop, I’M not sure what this firmware update is but there hasn’t been one thing I have tried or used my new Brydge Pro + that hasn’t worked fine? I sure wouldn’t exclude the Brydge Pro + waiting on some update, My Apple iPad Pro 12.9 512GB is like a new machine now. I’M not saying its a laptop replacement for home but I won’t be traveling with my laptop anymore only my iPad Pro.

So far I’m happy with Magic Keyboard.

  49. Dan Becker

I don’t understand the point of critiquing the iPad Pro over it’s price, and especially mentioning a lot of people don’t have a lot of money right now. Would a car reviewer every say something like that while reviewing a BMW? The Pro iPad is for people who want the best device. There are far cheaper iPad options for those who don’t have the money to spend on the Pro.
