Everyone seems to be cold plunging, or at the very least, watching other people do it. We had cold plunger Josh Cameron film the ice bath process while metabolic scientist Dr. Susanna Søberg explains what is going on in his body. Dr. Søberg breaks down how the body is reacting to the cold plunge, and reveals what kind of health benefits we see while in, and out, of the water.

Dr. Susanna Søberg is the Founder and CEO at an online health institute. She is a PhD in metabolism and specializes in functional breathing, cold and heat exposure for health optimization.
In her online school, she teaches how to “stress up to stress down” using natural stressors. Her scientific discoveries have shown the minimum threshold for how much cold and heat we need to reap the health benefits. She is an international author of “Winter Swimming” – a number one bestseller on Amazon in Swimming. Her book has been translated into 13 languages so far.

would also be nice to include information about what to do after you leave ice bath. Should I dry myself right away, should I try to increase my body temperature etc

I shower cold often and also have experience with sauna hot/cold baths etc. I just dry off and get dressed after the shower. I don’t think there is anything special you have to do. If you’re not used to cold water or under the weather it sometimes can be nice to help your body regulate itself, ie. dress warm enough, have nice tea for warmth and hydration or something like that. Hope that helps.

Here are some things you can do 😀

      1) Dry off: As soon as you get out of the ice bath, it’s importnt to dry off thoroughly….. Use a towel to pat yourself dry and get rid of any excess water on your skin…

2)Warm up gradually: Your body temperature will have dropped while you were in the ice bath, so it’s important to warm up slowly to avoid shock. Don’t jump into a hot shower right away….. Instead, put on warm clothes and allow your body to slowly adjust to the warmer temperature….

      3) Move around: Gentle exercise can help to increase blood flow and warm up your body…. You can try some light stretching or a short walk…

      4) Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water after an ice bath can help to rehydrate your body and flush out any toxins that may have been released during the cold exposure.

      5) Rest: Give your body some time to rest and recover after an ice bath. This can help to reduce inflammation and promote healing….

It’s also important to listen to your body and pay attention to any signs of discomfort or pain…. If you experience any numbness or tingling, or if you feel dizzy or lightheded, stop the ice bath and seek medical attention if necessary….

This is terrible for your body. You’re literally stressing the body for no reason, leading to an early death.

      February 28, 2023 at 5:53 am

Nah, in Finland this is pretty normal thing to do, people in ther 80’s and older are doing it regularly. It’s not recommended if you have serious heart problems but other then that its fine

    • Taylor Giles

      February 28, 2023 at 9:09 pm

That’s the point, you’re triggering your fight or flight response in a safe, controlled environment. If you stress your body out for a few minutes, it over compensates by releasing dopamine, serotonin and lowers cortisol.

Here in RU we do so more than 1k years. That is ancient pagan custom that transform after christianization of Rus’ to крещенская купель tradition. But most awesome thing is right after banya (like a finnish sauna but much wetter) jump for a few seconds in a snowbank of fresh soft snow. -5 to -10 С is ideal but i did so in -20 and lower. And then heat up in banya, and jump again… And after a few times just chill in a bathrobe with a cup of kvas.

lol my brother used to do this after a run or soccer practice (every now and again, not everyday)

    • Taylor Giles

      February 28, 2023 at 8:59 pm

You actually don’t want to do it until 4 hours after training as it can limit muscle hypertrophy

    • theluschmaster

      March 2, 2023 at 11:41 am

@Taylor Giles what does that mean?

    • Taylor Giles

      March 2, 2023 at 7:48 pm

@theluschmaster It can limit muscle growth, depends on what you’re going for though because it doesn’t affect performance, just muscle growth

    • theluschmaster

      March 4, 2023 at 12:07 pm

@Taylor Giles hmm .. that’s actually interesting and applicable to my brother because he’s been trying to build muscle – even bulk up a little but since he’s the definition of skinny (if only our body sizes were swapped 🥲) this might be helpful for him to know. Thanks so much, I’ll share this with him 💙

Sometimes you get good Wired videos, and sometimes you get this nonsense with no actual science to back it up. The speaker might have a PhD but if she had any real information it’s be published and peer-reviewed in journals first, not packaged as book “translated into 13 languages”. The only remotely related thing she’s cited in is a study showing that people who swim in cold water get better at thermoregulation. She’s just here to sell books and “courses”. Shame on you, Wired, the health and wellness field is filled with enough pseudoscience without you amplifying it

Why did this not mention Wim Hof? Isn’t he regarded as the leader of this practice in modern Western culture? Wasn’t he the one who made it popular over the past 10ish years of social media?

There is a small outside gym near where I live that is near the sea, so everytime I finish the workout I take a plunge there, often in the morning when the water is cold. It feels SO good!

This vid kinda meh. Here’s a use for ice baths. It’s great for helping with swelling & wrecked muscles (sore/bruised). After sparring or when got ruffled up or hard labor, quick controlled dip will help ease your body & help with recovery especially if don’t got any oils or patches around at the moment. It’s not for everybody so don’t force it
