To solve the climate crisis, we need to make tropical forests worth more alive than dead, says environmental economist Nat Keohane. Highlighting the urgent need to stop deforestation and the carbon pollution it brings, he details the work of the LEAF Coalition — a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership that’s channeling one billion dollars into protecting tropical forests — and shares three building blocks for a robust market for forest carbon that enables economies to thrive while protecting natural resources.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

to save the forests -> reduce cattle and soybeans (animal feeding) production -> we need to change our eating behaviour

Better Question: How can we change our eating behavior in this world?

I have a New Economic Model for Protecting Jobs in developed countries… Smart little fella, Leaf Coalition is just one, of several attempts by the US to dominates Brazilian and other south-american forests by creating “new” financial products exchange traded in NYSE based on carbon emission or credit. Nice try Nat. I guess ur speech is pretty good and probably will sell a bunch of “opportunities” protecting our planet lol 😂

In between all the people solely focussed on improving their social status by planting the same generic trees somewhere in a dessert and sharing it on social media, or by holding a sign in front of an oil company to gain some sort of false moral boost, I have to say that this seems like the most promising model I have seen to fight global warming, or at least one of few that has considered the concerns of all involved parties which makes it feasible. Nat, you have given me hope that something might actually change in between all the nonsense and I’m rooting for the LEAF Coalition to reach its goals!!

    ✝️

*For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”*

This is not new, it’s the Coase Theorem and was developed in 1960… While I can’t say where this guy gets his funding, I can say that many free market environmentalism arguments are funded by the oil industry. We should all be highly skeptical of anyone claiming they have a trick to make infinite growth on a finite planet sustainable.

The developed countries cut down millions and millions of square miles of temperate rain forest on our own soil.

Why are we even thinking of trying to persuade developing countries to conserve their own forests when there is no will on our part to reinstate our own forests on a basis that will have an impact on global warming?

As someone that lives in Brazil, I can GUARANTEE you that Mato Grosso is far from a good example of forest protection and the current president even less. The idea sounds beautiful but it’s a fantasy sold to those that live far away from the problem. And besides that, it sounds almost insane to me that all the victories we had in this field over the past decades to him sound like they were only possible because the goodwill developed countries took pity on us and decided to help solve our problems. Of course that help is more than welcome, but don’t take the credit away from the people that ACTUALLY made the biggest impact just so that you could sell that image of a genius that had a brilliant idea that will solve all of the world’s ecological problems. Like… really?

    May 11, 2022 at 6:57 pm

As a brazilian, I can assure that things in Mato Grosso are NOT as good as this gentleman puts. In 2021, the deforestation increased by 38%, and overall, in Brazil, the Amazon deforestation had the worst period in over ten years. The way Keohane brings the subject ignores the political aspects and the other movements and fights from indigenous people. Between 2005 and 2012, ALL of the Amazon Deforestation plummeted, which he forgot to mention, and you just can’t ignore the role of the government in this issue. It’s NOT the merit of private endeavours – which doesnt mean it wasnt helpful -, but of a whole circunstance and time period.

Tropical forest are one of the world most important carbon sinks absorbing over one fifth of the emission from burning fossils fuels every year. The latest research suggest that without them the world would be already nearly one degree hotter every year. We can’t solve climate change without tropical forest. Thank you
