Concrete is the second most-used substance on Earth (behind water), and it’s responsible for eight percent of the world’s carbon footprint. Cement researcher Karen Scrivener shares the research behind a pioneering new kind of cement known as LC3, which could slash carbon emissions from this crucial building material by 40 percent, if adopted at scale.

The stupidity of thinking plant food, the basis of all life on Earth, is a pollutant is so r-worded it hurts my soul.

    • Christopher Brand

      March 4, 2021 at 3:57 pm

The idea that “more is better” for anything that is useful/good in limited amounts is its own kind of stupidity.

    • Michael Tyler

      March 4, 2021 at 4:13 pm

@Christopher Brand So what is the “limited” amount you’re talking about? You must have an upper limit at which disaster strikes and the world burns, right?

    • Christopher Brand

      March 4, 2021 at 4:43 pm

@Michael Tyler no, I don’t personally have such a limit (climate science consensus would be a good place to start). I assume that atmospheric CO2 is the “plant food” you are referring to. More broadly, agricultural fertilizer runoff is a serious pollution problem and both CO2 and fertilizer will kill plants if there is too much, to say nothing of all the affects on people. The premise that plant food can’t be bad (in any amount) is silly 🙂

Can we please stop with this CO2 emissions crap. Do the research. Demonizing CO2 is a scam and the world, particularly the western world is falling for it. The scam is getting bigger and more and more people are getting in on it but know this. When all the gas and coal fired power is gone in the west for the sake of CO2 emissions and we enter the next little ice age, who will be hurting then. Everyone! Stop this nonsense now and stop thinking were so important to the Earth’s climate. How narcissistic. The Earth’s climate has been changing for centuries with and without changes in CO2 levels so demonsing a gas, that is essential to life is just absolute stupidity.

being stuck in a concrete industry, You cant do without concrete. all it would take is someone not beholden to concrete industry, to produce another material that is stronger, weighs less and doesnt need a large carbon and water footprint. they dont “like” concrete in countries with little drinking water that concrete demands but they have no alternatives.

    1) By reflecting away 30% of ISR the albedo, which would not exist w/o the atmosphere, makes the earth cooler than it would be without the atmosphere like that reflective panel set on the dash. Remove the atmosphere/GHGs and the earth becomes much like the moon, a barren rock with a 0.1 albedo, 20% more kJ/h, hot^3 on the lit side, cold^3 on the dark. Nikolov, Kramm (U of AK) and UCLA Diviner mission all tacitly agree.

    2) the GHG up/down welling, “trapping”/”back” radiating/delaying/intercepting, 100 % efficient, perpetual warming loop requires “extra” energy which according to RGHE theory it gets from

    3) the terrestrial surface radiating that “extra” energy as a near ideal .95 emissivity black body which

    4) it cannot do because of the non-radiative heat transfer processes of the contiguous atmospheric molecules.

    1+2+3+4 = 0 Greenhouse Effect + 0 Greenhouse gas warming + 0 man caused climate change.

Yeah, but if you’re heating it significantly less (using less energy = saving money) and you don’t need new equipment, it’s probably pretty affordable. I mean, it mostly sounds like the ingredients haven’t changed, it’s just the proportion of them and how they’re combined.

How about just mixing in dirt or clay and use pressure allowing 50-90% less cement to form building blocks and pillars (can still be done onsite). We need KISS solutions, not more complexity, and further importation of goods creating additional emmesions.

I think it has also to do with the place where the clothes are made. If you buy clothes from 10 euros, they are normally not made in good conditions. But if you buy clothes from about 50euros, you can be sure that the working conditions were already a lot better than the conditions with the cheap clothes.

CO2 is not a pollutant as such; vegetation loves it and also CO2 is actually not linked to climate warming; true (!) historical archeological data shows that there is no link between CO2 levels and average air temperature !
    It is the basics of data analysis not to adjust or selectively choose results to back up the thesis, yet this is exactly what so called greenies have been doing for years, including falsifying the results;
When climate really cools down in a few coming years, then those CO2 fighters will find another false reason to fool mankind again. Earth atmosphere has been cooling down already for the last few years.
And the cooling will keep progressing, I wonder for how long they will be able to keep telling us fairy tales about warming when more and more areas will be hit with unprecedented cold weather.
It is so sad that most people on Earth got fooled by those greenies and polititians.

In a part of the United States with more than 17,000 years of human history, cultural preservation advocate Tracie Revis is working to turn the Ocmulgee Mounds into Georgia’s first national park and preserve. This park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, bringing the tribal voice back to an area they were forcibly removed from 200 years ago. Revis explores the complex feelings of caring for this land and shows how it’s fostering healing in return.

Hundreds of millions of migrant workers travel within their countries to seek out means of survival — often leaving behind all they know for months or even years. Many face poverty and exploitation, and they need a robust social safety net to protect them, says migrant advocate and 2023 Audacious Project grantee Ashif Shaikh. He shares how his grassroots organization Migrants Resilience Collaborative is making life-changing benefits like social security and health care accessible to those who need them while also amplifying migrant voices — paving the way towards a world that supports the workers actually building it. (This ambitious idea is a part of the Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change.)
