Every Bridge For Every Situation, Explained By an Engineer | A World of Difference | WIRED
Dr. Nehemiah Mabry, PE, knows a lot about bridges. Nehemiah is a structural engineer and an educator; and he builds bridges for a living. Dr. Mabry sits down with WIRED to talk about all different kinds of bridges from around the globe. What’s the difference between a cable-stayed bridge and a suspension bridge? Are bridges…

In central Canada where it can get to minus 50 below zero. For 3/4 months the pillars of the bridge are incased in thick ice, in deeper rivers the water is still rapidly flowing under the ice. Is this a good kind of pressure for the bridge or not ?
By the way excellent commentary on bridges. This engineer not only is knowledgeable on structures, but he’s awesome at communicating it. 5 outta 5 for me.

Why tf are there arrows added in post? First off, they don’t make his point any clearer. And Secondly, they are demonstrating shear forces, not tension and compression, so they make his point even less clear. Nice job 2:05

18:05 Names of most bridges in St. Petersburg, Russia are actually translatable. Sorry, but there is no “Dvortsovaya Bridge” in our city. It’s one of: “Palace Bridge”, “Dvortsoviy Most” (pure name transliteration), or “Дворцовый мост” (the original name). Moreover, it’s incorrect to use the word form “Dvortsovaya” in conjunction with a bridge in Russian as the former is feminine and “bridge” is masculine. I guess, it is ok to say Dvortsoviy Bridge but it seems like it is not incorrect.
Nevertheless, the video is great. Thanks to Dr. Mabry!

Gonna be blunt here, feel like they used the same lighting for white engineers and scientists when they did videos in the set with them. Maybe they tested it with one of the lighting guys and we’re like “seems good to me” with any lack of other people. Interestingly enough though, couldn’t the camera guys raise exposure a bit and played around or even the editing guy? How many stages of people failed the lighting here and didn’t see a problem? what hahaha

The part about cable stayed bridges is actually not accurate, the main benefit is because its cheapest to build. For actual Longer spans, suspension bridge is absolutely the best option. That said, being economical is a MASSIVE advantage. Afterall, a bridge is primarily a functional structure and not an aesthetic structure.

November 20, 2020 at 8:49 pm
Really interesting video, one thing I’d like to say about the bailey bridges, while they are/were supposed to be temporary, they were usually really well made. The US army left some bridges in my country after WW2, and some are still operating today… Sure usually they can’t carry very heavy weights anymore and stuff like that but there was a bailey bridge between 2 villages near my town that was working as actual road bridge (as in, not just for pedestrians but also for cars) until last year… AFAIK they didn’t actually demolish it, but instead took it apart and rebuilt it in some military history museum…
And as for stone arch bridges being able to last long, we have multiple very old stone bridges here in europe, not just the aquaduct, for example the Charles Bridge, built in 1348, in Prague is my favourite, and it can carry an incredible load… Well an incredible amount of overweight american tourists, but that’s a great load bearing test imo 😀

I could listen to this guy talk about this all day. Love it.
But like, it kind of bugs me that they *only* used the deceptive wide angle shot for the Eshima Ohashi Bridge. Like yeah, a 6% grade is nothing to scoff at, it’s still steep for a bridge. But without the depth of field being distorted it doesn’t look that crazy at all.

Why not talk about the third Bosphorus bridge in Istanbul when mentioning hybrid bridges? That is a much more pronounced example of such a bridge. As well as the fact that many of Roebling’s bridges had diagonal stays simply because the technology for such large-scale bridges were not known yet. In reality, the Brooklyn bridge did not need many of those diagonal stays.

7:30 The forces one the deck/span (horizontal) seem reversed. Shouldn’t it be tension forces (<- ->) at the bottom of the span and compressive forces (-> <-) at the top of the span? Or is the span curved up instead of sagging?

The direction of the arrows in the illustrations was really frustrating to watch.
Isolate one member & show the forces acting on it, just randomly drawing arrows confuses the viewer.

hey uh, this video is really interesting, but the writing is pretty bad. Maybe fewer leading questions? Or just fewer questions altogether, and let the expert talk more? The reporter’s participation in the video really broke up the expert “lecture” in jarring and unpleasant ways; this was only exacerbated by the “corny” and “leading” nature of the questions.

so did they forget to mic the interviewer??
spambot71
November 27, 2020 at 4:39 am
the dubbed “interviewer’s” delivery gets more natural later on in the video, at which point the most jarring part is the mismatch in levels and room response. they should’ve given them a second take at least for the first several questions, as is it’s PAINFUL. tbh a lot of the prompting questions probably could’ve just been left out and replaced with a jump cut and it would’ve flowed just fine

At 12:52, the entry for the Truss Bridge Type: “Fracture critical (no load path redundancy)”. Regrettably, Dr. Mabry does not discuss this matter in the video. But this aspect of the truss bridge is really important. A number of truss structure failures hinge on this failure mode. Engineers take note.
Also, the matter of why one type of bridge structure is selected over another in a particular situation is not discussed. Oh, well.

I already knew it for the most part, but hearing a structural engineer say, “We have an unacceptable number of either structurally deficient, or functionally obsolete bridges” is very scary. lol

Is there any kind of bridge that is more like an elevator? Like one of those polybridge levels where you have to make a hydraulic elevator to move cars up and down?

The Rakotzbrücke (Devil’s Bridge) in Germany is more of a sculpture than a bridge. It isn’t used as a bridge and by the way it doesn’t always look that amazing. I was there last weekend and there was no water and construction vehicles parked under it.

The Brooklyn Bridge has its famous cobwebby look because of the patterns formed by the suspension cables and the cable stays).

That suspension/moveable bridge called ‘the eyelid’ is such a beautiful & supremely elegant design/solution. I just love it 🙂

I wanted to be proud because Langkawi, Malaysia was mentioned but I think the lighting was the elephant in the room that needs to be addressed. Are you guys filming during Earth Hour? Plus, give the poor guy a glass of water. Geez. His Troat clearly needs it.

They kept showing “W/1” and “W/2” for I guess “W1” (or “W_1”) and “W2” (or “W_2”) which is wrong and annoying. Or else they meant W/1 (ie W) and W/2 (ie 0.5 W), in which case they’re wrong.

This is what my dad does. Surprisingly most bridges are DECADES past due for repair… budget people are often not educated on the safety issues associated with this type of neglect…. just like the lighting person was not aware how badly he truly needed that spotlight that the production budget of this video did not allow for… Moral of the story… if you think a bridge looks unsafe or you have a strong gut feeling to avoid a bridge… you probably should. 😉

We have a TON of bridges in my city that were built around the same time and are well past their 50 year design. Some of them need complete redesigns because traffic has dramatically increased since they were built but instead the city just keeps patching up the old ones, even when there are literally chunks of concrete falling off onto roadways beneath. A year ago they finally fully rebuilt one that had a net underneath for about a decade to catch the falling debris. It’s that bad.

Was surprised to see Newcastle UK take as long as it did it get a mention. You’ve got the High Level Bridge (Trains pass on top, its a road underneath), the Tyne Bridge (OG Sydney Harbour Bridge), the Swing Bridge (largest Swing Bridge in the world when constructed), and the Millennium Bridge – which got the mention.

The bridges in town
Go up and down
So boats can go through
Oh yes they do
And cars have to wait
Something they hate
And drivers get mad
Tough luck, too bad
But quick look around
In the town
The next bridge
Goes up and down

Interviewee was great, but lighting is awful, interviewer/narrator voice is awkward, plus the questions asked are cringe because they’re forced and don’t have a natural flow. What happened to just letting the interviewees speak and editing out the other voices? Was there no budget for proper lighting and editing?

Your poor lightening choices were so distracting, I had to rewatch the first few minutes.
You under-exposed the middle of his face like he’s a villain! Completely inappropriate for the topic at hand and in extremely bad taste. Thumbs up to the expert – Double thumbs Down to the cine team on this one – this effort sucks.

Lightning aside, he has a great shinning personality, bridges have always been one of my secret loves, even back when they used to bury bones on both sides of them superstitiously. But his personableness was hamstrung by that machine voice, like just because it’s a female voice it somehow is not annoying, like the sound of fingernails raked over a chalk board stuck in her throat.
