Genuinely curious about your comment. Are you suggesting Temu business model is proof that socialism is good or that capitalism is bad? Because it’s evidence of neither imo. It’s not evidence for the inverse of either economic system either. The one thing it proves to me is that if a manufacturer is desperate enough, and has low enough labor costs, they’ll sell their products below even COGS just to minimize losses. It also shows that buyers will purchase said products even if the ads are deceptive or outright false, they may never get their purchase, and they’re buying something probably not worth the cost to ship it around the globe. It’s a case study in a race to the bottom imo.

The reason Temu is so cheap is they steel the intellectual property of other companies, their manufacturing process and r&d that they didn’t have to pay for and then make the same product for a 10th of the cost because they didn’t have to do anything but steal the fabs and research of companies. This is because China doesn’t give two shits about intellectual property rights of any non-Chinese companies.

Your data isn’t worth much. People can buy it for pennies. It’s worth way more for them to get their app on your phone and have it tell you every 45 minutes that you can buy more. It’s the same for virtually every app that promotes deals – like every fast food app. You save $2 on a meal, but McDonald’s convinced you to buy twice as many meals in a month than you would have otherwise.

The real answer is they’re doing the same thing other companies like Walmart and Amazon does. The only difference is they lack market share. So in order to gain market share, they trim their margins to compete.
And just like their top US competitors, as soon as they succeed in gaining sufficient market share, they will increase prices to juice profits.
Or have you noticed most people who have a prime membership almost never buy enough stuff to actually recoup what they would have spent by just paying for shipping?

Cheap useless stuff is bad, but we’ve all seen shark tank, we should know how much middleman brands profit off of factories abroad. So rather than hiring factories to produce products they’re allowing factories to move excess stock?
I mean, that’s definitely not worse than a lot of ‘quality’ brands in turns of its contribution to ongoing human rights issues. Stock that would have gone in the bin is already one way consumers can reduce their impact. Am I hearing you right? I know you’re saying there aren’t the best conditions in the factories, but what’s important is how the consumer is influencing those conditions. Maybe you could clarify but it is sounding like using these platforms is likely to be more of secondary input than buying brand name items without human rights certifications on them

I would never buy anything off teamu, eBay or anything that’s not Amazon’s own brand of Amazon basics. Everything else on those platforms is a cheap Chinese knockoff

Also the Chinese government heavily subsides these businesses (also has to have a certain part ownership by law in Chinese businesses, at leqst that was the case some years ago, not sure now), so thats why the factories can sell this excessive capacity and actually tank massive losses, while it also looks good on paper (Chinese economy and GDP growing on paper), while actually being a real fragile and artificially inflated system
