Sorry, if you can find ten sane people in most any random circle of friends on this planet, I ‘d be surprised. Friends are indeed important — anyone who loves you, learn to cherish them, because you’ll find them few and far between.

Aww, you assumed I was raised in stability and was allowed to stay in one place long enough a. to learn how to build and maintain long-term relationships, and b. for people to be able to incorporate me into their village. Isn’t that sweet

I don’t have a village. It’s just my name at the top. I gave me a score of 1/10. Now what?

Personally I’m surprised that you advise to send a standard message like that instead of calling or meeting that person. Sending a message will most of the time be very superficial.

Former senior US national security official Miles Taylor shares a personal account that raises a broader civic concern: the growing cost of dissent in American public life. Drawing on his experience inside government and living the consequences of speaking openly, he says that the real threat to US democracy isn’t the politicians or hard-liners — it’s the two-thirds of Americans who don’t speak up. (This talk contains mature language.) (Recorded at TEDxMidAtlantic on November 1, 2025)
